"In the first two decades of the 19th century, waves of independence movements swept across Spanish America, fueled by revolutionary ideas from France. The Spanish Crown was slow to react, with severe domestic problems of their own, and one by one various countries across Central and South America gained nation sovereignty. Peru would eventually attain the same, but only through the application of force, as it remained one of the few remaining Royalist bastions on the continent. This map depicts the outline of the Viceroyalty of Peru, which remained ostensibly under Spanish Control until formal independence in 1824. The rugged terrain is shown in hachure, and various annotations throughout the image directly reference the ongoing political conflicts. Tribes are labeled as "implacable enemies to the Spanish" or described as revolted or rebels. The map was originally designed by Scottish cartographer John Pinkerton. As part of the Edinburgh School of Cartography (which included the likes of John Cary and John Thomson), Pinkerton was responsible for creating some of the most highly detailed and precise atlas maps of the early 19th century. Today, his maps are prized for their size, color, and wealth of information. This particular example was included in the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, published in Philadelphia by Thomas Dobson in 1818." Sheet Height (in) 22.1 Condition B- Heavy discoloration and wear, including small image loss, along the vertical centerfold. Abrasion and some offsetting from the title block visible within the image.

"With a history dating back to the Teutonic Order of Knights, Prussia has long been associated with martial prowess and an often bellicose attitude. Holy Roman Emperor Leopold I recognized Frederick I as "King in Prussia" in 1700, partially as acknowledgement for his military support after the Thirty Years war. The kingdom would continue to use its well trained armies to gain territory through the 18th century, often at the expense of it's neighbor, Austria. Napoleon checked Prussian military hegemony, but troops under Marshal Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher played a valuable role at Waterloo, and Prussia was able to regain her lost territory at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. This map, published three years later, shows the extent of such claims along the southern shore of the Baltic Sea. Prussian dominions extend from borders with the German Confederation in the east to Russia in the West. This particular example was included in the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, published in Philadelphia by Thomas Dobson in 1818." Sheet Height (in) 22.1 Condition B Moderate to heavy cluster of spotting in the upper right corner, and a bit of other mild scattered soiling and offsetting within the image. Creasing and faint discoloration along the vertical centerfold. Despite the issues, the map remains in good condition and retains its vibrant original hand color.

This attractive map uses bright hand color to distinguish between the various political components of the Southern, or Austrian, Netherlands shortly after Napoleon's defeat. The territory was overrun and annexed by the French in the 1790's, and united with the lands of the previously independent Dutch Republic into the United Kingdom of the Netherlands at the Congress of Vienna in 1815. This was short lived, as in 1830 the southern territories successfully revolted and formed the modern-day state of Belgium. This particular example was included in the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, published in Philadelphia by Thomas Dobson in 1818. Sheet Height (in) 22.25 Condition A- Minor offsetting within the image and a bit of faint soiling around the margins. Remains in very good condition, with nice original hand color.

This map, which is actually comprised of three separate maps in one, highlights several of the more remote islands that make up the British Empire. In the upper half, the image is evenly divided between the Scilly Isles, off the southeast tip of Cornwall, and the Shetlands, the northernmost territory of the United Kingdom. Immediately below is a third map showing the location of the Channel Islands off the French coast. The most important of these are Jersey and Guernsey, remnants of the former Duchy of Normandy that remain Crown dependencies to this day. Within each map, topography is depicted with finely engraved hachures and navigational hazards (rocks, shoals, and sandbanks) are given extra emphasis. This particular example was included in the American edition of Pinkerton's Modern Atlas, published in Philadelphia by Thomas Dobson in 1818. Sheet Height (in) 32.4 Condition B+ Minor offsetting and creasing along horizontal fold line. Wear and a handful of dark stains in the margins, one of which barely enters the image in the lower left corner. Remains in very good condition, with attractive original hand color.
