2 vols, cloth, 8vo, 24 cm, 6, xiii, 240 + 241-497 pp, maps. From the introduction to volumes two and three: "This, Darwin's first book, originally appeared, with the subtitle Journal and Remarks. 1832-1836. as the third volume of Narrative of the Surveying Voyages. the whole edited by FitzRoy (Freeman 10). It appeared again later in the same year as an independent book under the above title. Many years later, he wrote in his autobiography 'The success of this my first literary child always tickles my vanity more than any of my other books' In 1845. John Murray asked Darwin if he would rewrite it, in a shorter and more popular style, for inclusion in his Colonial and Home Library. This he did and the book was greatly altered and issued without the map* (Freeman 14): the present edition reprints Darwin's original text published in 1839." Near Very Good.

A scarce and well-produced facsimile of the work that "introduced the trial balance, as such, for the first time", written by "the first native Dutch writer to deal with the subject of book-keeping" (Edwards, p. 456). Though not marked as such, this copy is from the library of the editor, Basil S. Yamey (1919-2020), a notable South African accounting historian. Yamey was a professor at the London School of Economics and a trustee of the National and Tate galleries. His other major publications include The Economics of Under-Developed Countries (1957), Essays on the History of Accounting (1978), and Art & Accounting (1989). This French translation was first published in 1543; it was originally published earlier that year in Dutch as Nieuwe instructie, and is here reprinted in the second series of Historic Accounting Literature. In the handbook to the first series, Yamey and his co-author Michael F. Bywater explained that the texts "disseminated, expounded, and developed the art of bookkeeping in the 350 years after the publication of the pioneering description of double-entry by Fra Luca Pacioli in his Summa de Arithmetica of 1494"; in reprinting them, "the results of generations of continuing collecting activity have thus become widely accessible to prompt further research into the history of accounting" (pp. 9 & 27). Michael F. Bywater & Basil S. Yamey, Historic Accounting Literature: A Companion Guide, 1982; James Don Edwards, "Early Bookkeeping and its Development into Accounting", The Business History Review, vol. 34, no. 4, 1960. Quarto. Original white quarter faux vellum lettered in gilt, blue board sides, buff endpapers. Facsimile text reproducing original edition in French. Rubbing to rear cover, contents clean. A very good copy indeed.

A scarce and substantial set of this attractively produced series, presenting in facsimile the original editions that shaped the history of accounting within the period 1543-1831; these copies formerly in the possession of the editor, Basil Selig Yamey, with his reading notes. The notable South African accounting historian Yamey (1919-2020) was a professor at the London School of Economics and a trustee of the National and Tate galleries. His other major publications include The Economics of Under-Developed Countries (1957), Essays on the History of Accounting (1978), and Art & Accounting (1989). His inlaid notes, often annotated in brief, mark sections of text that clearly raised areas of particular interest to him, such as the development of bookkeeping methods and the origins of certain terminology. In the facsimile for Instruction pour tenir les livres en parties doubles ou a l'italienne by Abraham de Graaf (1718), originally published in Dutch, Yamey highlights its useful "instructions for d[ouble] e[ntry]" (p. 1). Meanwhile, in Anthonius van Neulighem's Openbaringe van 't Italiaens boeck-houden (1631), Yamey offers the critique "Dutch perfected d[ouble-entry bookkeeping]. Should be called Nederlander [not Italian]"; as Yamey writes in his general introduction, "outside Italy the double entry system was often called the Italian system until well into the nineteenth century" (vol. 1, p. 5). On a sticky note in Claude Irson's Méthode pour bien dresser toutes sortes de comptes à parties doubles (1678), Yamey comments "nice due monete ["two coins"] example" (p. 8). In the handbook to the 1978-80 first series Historic Accounting Literature: A Companion Guide (1982), Yamey and his co-author Michael F. 9 & 27). The second series therefore enlarges upon an important contribution and aid to the study of accounting history. A full list of titles is available on request. Michael F. Bywater & Basil S. Yamey, Historic Accounting Literature: A Companion Guide, 1982. Together 41 works in 25 (of 31) volumes, of various sizes. Original white quarter faux vellum lettered in gilt, blue board sides, buff endpapers. Facsimile texts reproducing original editions in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, and Dutch. Bookmarks and sticky notes, often annotated by Yamey, placed throughout the volumes as markers of close reading (see main note), text unmarked and clean. Sunning to many boards, occasional rubbing, small puncture to spine of vol. 4, central crease to spine of vol. 16, vol. 24 with Yamey's note pasted on spine and tape on front cover. A very good set.
