Among the "memorable events during the year 1793", in between references to the turbulent incidents in post-revolutionary Republican France, including the execution of King Louis XVI, The Times newspaper listed, as the last article, the arrival of the Turkish Ambassador at Dover in December. It was indeed a memorable event, since Yusuf Agâh Efendi (1744-1824) was the first resident Ottoman envoy to be sent to the court of St James's by the Sublime Porte and his arrival in Britain was highly anticipated. On the 220th anniversary year of this historic event the Turkish music historian Dr Emre Arac? traces the steps of the Ottoman ambassador in 18th century London through a kaleidoscope of concerts, dinners, processions, firework displays and balls from Theatre Royal, Covent Garden to the celebrated Ranelagh and Vauxhall Gardens.

'I was born of a father of white and of a small glass of Andalusian water of life, I was born of a mother the daughter of a fifteen year-old daughter born in Málaga in Los Percheles the beautiful bull who engendered me his forehead wreathed in jasmine.' Pablo Ruíz Picasso, born in Málaga in 1881, in a house facing the Merced Square in the heart of a city that already had 2500 years of history, comes with the memories of a house full of sisters and aunts, with doves fluttering around the square where he played as a small child, and the smell of paint in the walls. The selection, curated by Mario Virgilio Montañez Arroyo, offering us examples of the stylistic transitions of an artist who has made his mark on visual formats ever since the last century, is a reflection of his world; his constant and never-ending search. Engravings from the Picasso Foundation, Birthplace Museum's Collection are exhibited to create a full panorama of the models, techniques, and styles of the artist between 1923 and 1969, half a century of changing creation during which he combines and switches between Classicism, Cubism, and Surrealism. Traditional themes are questioned in six sections, which reflect and bear witness to Picasso's incessant search, his defence of the freedom and independence of the artist, which made him the 20th century's greatest artist. Engravings and ceramics, extending from realistic depictions of certain subjects to their Cubist and Surrealist interpretations, are accompanied by his personal elements of Picasso's belongings when he was a child.".

Imprinting fascinated Jean Dubuffet for forty years and it is indissolubly a part of his creative oeuvre. Throughout his life, in certain intense and active phases, he would not cease to explore the range of the different techniques of printing and most of all that of lithography, interpreting and inventing new methods in order to better meet his needs. According to a set of associations and the logic distinctive of this artist, each discovery led him directly to a rich field of developments into which he was to rush with an unvarying sense of wonder, ignoring the limits of these new fields of investigations.

'Scenes from Tsarist Russia: 19th Century Russian Classics from the State Russian Museum Collection, not only presented art lovers with a selection of masterpieces being displayed for the first time in Turkey, but also offered scenes of Russian history through Russian Realist paintings. The masterpieces from the rich collection from the State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg reflected every aspect of life including labour and poverty, the world of children, public festivals, war and death, scenes from bourgeois life, and revolution. In literature, music, and fine arts, the "Russian spirit" is depicted as a world of emotions in which love, sorrow, and death run rampant. After the 1860s, Realist conventions came to dominate the genre scenes. Progressive artists of Russia began portraying the fundamental problems of the period such as social injustice, serfdom (until 1861, peasants were considered as property of landowners in Russia), child labor, subjugation of women, and poverty. Daily life hence became a point of interest in art. In the 1870s and particularly after the 1880s, a more positive attitude came into view; the artists gradually diverged from depicting painful worlds. The public was no longer the victim, but a powerful subject. A tendency to poeticize folklore, as well as the public perception of nature and the universe began to emerge. Social problems were addressed in their entirety; analysis replaced condemnation. The exhibition, which included artists from Repin to Makovsky, Yaroshenko to Shishkin along with many others, presented not only Russia of the period with all its different aspects, but with its themes and characters the exhibition offered audiences a unique experience, one similar to reading the works of the great Russian writers such as Nikolai Gogol and Fyodor Dostoevsky.'.

"Since its establishment, Pera Museum has hosted works by several outstanding artists representing different genres. In 2007, the museum opened its doors to one of the most intriguing creative artists in the world, the Georgian peasant painter Pirosmani. This exhibition of Pirosmani's naïve paintings took us on a journey through joyous feasts of colour, scent, and forms, through the blossoming meadows, villages, and animals of a neighbouring country. Recognized only by his immediate circle while he was still alive, Pirosmani gained acknowledgment in the 1920s and 30s, particularly in the Western art circles, in which primitive and naïve artists were starting to be appreciated. Since then, his paintings continue to fascinate art connoisseurs in the world with their unprecedented sincerity and charm. Niko Pirosmani (1862-1918) was born to a peasant family in one of the regions of Georgia - Kakheti, in the village of Mirzaani. During his life, most of which he spent in Tbilisi, he never received any professional education. In 1882, he opened a studio with another painter, Gigo Zaziashvili, accepting commissions for signboards. However, the partners soon went bankrupt. For mere subsistence, he occasionally worked in Tbilisi 'dukhans' (tavern), or at the rail station, dying in poverty in Tbilisi, in 1918. Art was the goal of his whole being, his life's vocation. Towards the end of the 1890s, he devoted himself exclusively to painting. Pirosmani's life was hard and tragic. The artist was homeless and lonely. Whenever he could afford it, he would rent a small room in the basement or under a staircase. Often, he would spend the night where he worked. Pirosmani passed away in loneliness and obscurity in 1918. Even the location of his grave remains unknown. As it usually is the case, after his death, the artist's works were collected and bought, references about his life were sought, and publications started to flood the newspapers. Pirosmani's name and his works were famed and appreciated worldwide. Pirosmani's paintings speak for the great mastery of the artist. Most of them are performed on black oilcloth, which was his technological expertise. It is known that Pirosmani created quickly; it only took him several hours or days to paint. He worked rapidly and spontaneously. A certain clue to unveiling Pirosmani's artistic conception is the inscriptions and names on the paintings, the meaningful connotation of which defines the artistic order of the painting. In each specific case, the common compositional structure, time, space interpretation, rhythm, manner of conveying the form and colour expression directly respond to the defining role of the artistic image. Pirosmani, as an artist, was first discovered in 1912 by Ilya Zdanevich (Ilyazd), a poet and an active representative of Georgian, Russian and European avant-garde, along with his brother artist Kiril Zdanevich, and the artist Michael Le Dantiu. At the avant-garde exhibition 'Mishen' (Target) held in Moscow, in 1913, Ilya Zdanevich presented Pirosmani's works to the public for the first time and began promoting the artist through different publications thereafter. He also arranged an exhibition for Pirosmani in his art studio in 1916. Interest towards Pirosmani grew considerably. The same year, he was invited to the meeting of 'Georgian Artists' Society.' The artist's photograph and a reproduction of his painting were published in the newspaper 'Tsnobis Purtseli' ('Messenger'). Pirosmani was starting to be recognized by Georgian artists and the public. Today, Pirosmani is known across the world and his art has long reached beyond the borders of his native country.".

Bare, naked, nude: A story of modernization in Turkish painting.= Üryan, çiplak, nü: Türk resminde bir modernlesme öyküsü. [Exhibition catalogue]. Bare, Naked, Nude: A Story of Modernization in Turkish Painting focuses on the evolution of nude painting as one of the foremost genres alongside portraiture, landscape, and still life in Turkish modern art. The rich diversity of styles represented in the paintings that come together in this exhibition reveal that the nude, far from being a subject for Turkish artists constitutes a means of expression fundamental in the search for form. The most challenging trial for artists in their student years, the human body emerges as a central source of inspiration in both the pursuit for modernist tendencies in Western art and in the efforts to articulate an individual artistic language. The exhibition catalogue, through the essay of the curator, Ahu Antmen and the selected paintings offer us the possibility to envisage the visual adventure behind Turkey's story of modernization, providing an insight into the formation of artistic identity in the period extending from the Ottoman Empire to the Republic, the challenges of transforming the perception of the female body from a framework of privacy to that of a desexualized object and the connections between the art and the nude in the perception of a modern identity. Gelman Koleksiyonu'ndan. [Exhibition catalogue]. Curated by Helga Prignitz-Poda. Edited by Begüm Akkoyunli Ersoz, Tania Bahar. The Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera from the Gelman Collection exhibition introduced art lovers to two of the most outstanding and globally renowned Mexican figures of 20th century art. Generating wide interest, as much with their unique characters, life stories, and intriguing relationship, as with their oeuvre, these two artists were welcomed for the very first time to Turkey with this exhibition presenting over forty of their works. Collectors Jacques and Natasha Gelman spent a significant portion of their lives in Mexico; the works included in the couple's extensive collection, encompasses 20th century Mexican art, outstanding Frida Kahlo self-portraits, that reflect the profound traces of her artistic personality, as well as rare examples of Diego Rivera's canvas paintings. This globally acclaimed collection was previously presented to audiences only through a limited number of exhibitions outside of Mexico. Apart from the most favored Frida Kahlo works of the "Frida Kahlo Retrospective" organized in Berlin and Vienna in 2010, the exhibition at Pera Museum also included Diego Rivera's paintings.

A selection from the Cathedral and Diocesan Museum, Vienna Otto Mauer Collection.= 20. yüzyil ustalarindan baski, desen ve suluboyalar. Viyana Katedral ve Baspiskoposluk Müzesi, Otto Mauer Koleksiyonu'ndan bir seçme. [Exhibition catalogue]. Monsignore Otto Mauer was a Catholic priest. He was also a passionate, foresighted collector who, apart from his position as a clergyman, was enthusiastic about all domains of contemporary art and regardless of their beliefs or origins, approached all "avant-garde" artists with the same openness. As one of the most outstanding collections of Modern Austrian art, the names of the artists represented within the collection is almost a "who is who" of post-1945 Austrian art. By encompassing a wide spectrum from "classical" modern to postmodern, Mauer tried to create a "reference collection," analogous to an atlas of art history. By World War II, he had already begun collecting with great resolution, the lithographs of the leading representatives of Parisian modern art, as well as the original works of German and Austrian artists. Gallery St Stephan, which he founded in 1954, evolved into the leading avant-garde gallery of Vienna under his management in the 1950s and 60s; it also acquired a considerable and well-deserved fame on the international art scene. Otto Mauer's relationship with art was always defined by his personal and amicable connections with the artists. His collection, which he was able to expand uninterruptedly until 1973, by purchases and artists' gifts, must be perceived not only as an indication of his progressive interest in art, but also as a very subjective interpretation of modern Austrian painting.

[Exhibition catalogue]. Sophia Vari is Greek by birth but was raised as a world citizen. She started out as a painter, but her search for a means of expression that would liberate her brought her to sculpture, satisfying the need she felt inside. The artist has aimed to take geometry, volume, and shapes, humanizing these elements in a void, using a wide variety of materials such as monumental sculptures made of heavy marble and bronze, as well as precious metals. Vari presents her works at exhibition venues and city squares throughout the world; she continues her search concerning the relationship between volume, layer, and surfaces in her canvases through collage and painting. Curated by Marisa Oropesa and Maria Toral, the exhibition brings together Vari's sculptures and paintings, emphasizing the timeless quality of the artist's art. Difficult to compartmentalize into a specific time period or place, these works combine what is physical and logical with what is sensual, the flat with the voluminous.

Cities of the three books: Jerusalem and the Holy Land in 19th century photographs.= Üç kitapli kentler: 19. yüzyil fotograflarinda Kudüs ve kutsal topraklar. The Album of Grand Vizier Kâmil Pasha and Local Photographers: The photograph album presented to Grand Vizier Kâmil Pasha encompasses 111 images of the Holy Land. A portion of these photographs was taken by Garabed Krikorian of the Jerusalem Armenian community. The person who introduced Krikorian to the art of photography was none other than Yessayi Garabedian, the first local photographer of Jerusalem. He established his own photographic studio in 1859 within the Jerusalem Armenian Monastery. Mendel John Diness, Peter Bergheim, Davud Sabunci, Leon Katz, Khalil Raad and Yeshayahu Raffalovich are recognized as outstanding masters of local photography in late-19th century. Jerusalem: The City of Faith and Passion: Prophets and kings constructed hand in hand the mythology of Jerusalem. The thrones of the heavens and earth were set in this city. From David to Solomon, and from Jesus Christ to Muhammad, it was the singular pole in a geography of faith. In the Middle Ages, it replaced Rome, which regarded itself as the navel of the earth. Jerusalem was the dream of those who embraced the Cross and the indispensable, holy land of Umayyad, Abbasid, Ayyubid, Fatimid caliphs, as well as Mamluk and Seljukid sultans. The city found peace under Ottoman rule from 1516 until 1917. Yet, before and after that time, the tears of humanity did not subside. First Photographers in the Holy Land: In 1833, British explorer Frederick Catherwood used the camera lucida in the Holy Land and produced the very first images of the Noble Sanctuary (Haram al-Sharif). Catherwood, who unveiled the Sacred, was followed by Scottish minister Alexander Keith. Keith's goal was to corroborate the text of the Holy Bible with images. This concept set the groundwork for British picturesque photography, which was particular to the Orient. In 1844, Joseph-Philibert Girault de Prangey experimented with a different style and focused on Islamic architecture in the Holy Land. Thus came along the first products of French documentary photography vis-à-vis the British picturesque. The photographers who convey to us today the history of the Holy Land have, to a large extent, emerged out of this school.

Marmara Üniversitesi Güzel Sanatlar Fakültesi 2005-2006 Akademik Yili Diploma Projeleri Sergisi. [Exhibition catalogue]. Prep. Inci Deniz Ilgin, Begüm Akkoyunlu, Zeynep Ögel. For the artist, there is a particularly productive relationship between the hand and the object. The hand must wield the brush masterfully; its skill must predominate when shaping the mass of clay. The fingers must find the way to elicit the finest sound from the strings of the violin, the keys of the piano. Here the hand searches for thought and feeling; the instant it finds what it has sought ? in spite of its appetite ? it must rise from the banquet table of sound or colour or form, otherwise, like every other thing that loses its equilibrium, it becomes subject to damage. The hand of the designer takes heed of the relationship between hand and object. Perhaps his relationship with the object develops as it passes through the filter of his relationship with the hand, because in the person-object relationship, holding and using are significantly predominant. But whether we are discussing art or design, if there is no relationship with creative potential in the relationship between matter and product, the hand is nothing more than a useful tool. From this aspect, the hand is the confessor of the heart, the brain and the aggregation that anticipates the creative potential. The collaboration between the Fine Arts Faculty of Marmara University and the Pera Museum was based upon the condition that the ten divisions of this Faculty would be included in the exhibition and that it would be comprised from the works of the graduating class. It was certain that this interdisciplinary exhibition would display an energetic and extremely colourful totality. It was important to present the exhibition within the framework of a shared theme that would unify these varying techniques and disciplines. Ultimately the discussions on this subject led to the choice of the title "el/le", because of the breadth of its meaning. In the "EL/LE" exhibition, painting, sculpture, graphic arts, ceramics, industrial products, interior design, textiles, photography and cinema come together in the opulence generated by the traditional arts of the hand. The "hand" is interpreted by the hands of artists and designers. What aspects of the hand will be beautified through the abundant energy of these creators? This exhibition provided the conclusive answer to that question.

Images of our time: Works from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo.= Günümüz imgeleri: Saraybosna Güzel Sanatlar Akademisi'nden yapitlar. [Exhibition catalogue]. The Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Sarajevo was founded in 1972 as the first Academy of Fine Arts in Bosnia and Herzegovina and became one of the forerunners in Bosnian contemporary art. An openness for diverse artistic poetics, a departure from strict academism, flexibility of curricula in interaction with the wider social community, synergy between traditional design knowledge and skills and new media challenges have all led the numerous graduates from the Academy of Fine Arts in Sarajevo to become recognised artists, designers and professors throughout the world. The exhibition catalogue presents an essay by curator Aida Abadzic Hodzic discussing the contemporary interpretations of Bosnian young artists and works in various media created by undergraduate and graduate students, as well as graduates of the six faculties of the academy, including painting, sculpture, art education, printmaking, graphic and product design. The works of outstanding contemporary artist and 2003 Turner Prize winner Grayson Perry (b. 1960) will be exhibited at Pera Museum, including tapestries, ceramics and prints. Organised in collaboration with the British Council and curated by Linsey Young from the British Council's Visual Arts Team, the exhibition reflects the artist's unrelenting fascination with issues of the everyday, of religion, class, and identity. Well-known for his transvestite alter ego "Claire", Perry's largest single body of work to date, The Vanity of Small Differences, composed of six tapestries from the British Council Collection, will also be exhibited. Though working within the context of contemporary art, Perry remains a practitioner of artisanal crafts and a lover of beauty. He rejects conceptual art as the sole claimant of 'ideas' and champions the decorative and intimate qualities of handmade objects with stories to tell. The ceramic medium that first drew Grayson Perry to craft practice continues to be a critical, and is perhaps the most traditionally beautiful, element of his work. In this exhibition, alongside the series of "The Vanity of Small Differences" the artist's earliest work, a ceramic pot from 2002, the period during which Perry was nominated for the Turner Prize; culminating in a self-portrait, 'A Map of Days,' which was completed in 2014 for a major exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery are also included. Linsey Young, curator of the exhibition "Small Differences" states that visitors will be able to explore the magnificent interior world of Grayson Perry. Through the complex and physically detailed narratives, the audience can observe motifs, such as planes, shopping centres, churches and temples, mobile telephones and of course the artist's beloved teddy bear, Alan Measles, which appear again and again in many different guises.

"As the first extensive exhibition in Turkey to showcase the works of leading 20th-century sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti, (1901-1966) in a retrospective approach, reveals his artistic career, most of which was spent at his studio in Paris, Montparnasse, through a range of works that extend from his earlier to latest oeuvre, including an unfinished piece. In the course of his career, which he began at a very young age, Giacometti turned from Neo-Impressionist influences to post-Cubist and Surrealist creations. Compelled to search for an exploration of the reality of a human form, he was expelled from the Surrealist movement of which he was a part for some time and, until his death, embarked upon a solitary adventure with the human figure in his repeatedly produced sculptures and paintings. The heads and slender, elongated figures he worked on at his small studio culminated in countless works in his quest to depict reality not as it is but as he was seeing it. Exhibition catalogue presents works by the artist, centered on the two most defining periods, namely pre- and post-World War II, in Giacometti's artistic career, and also sheds light upon the artist's infinite quest through his own writings, interview and essays.".

One of the most significant and multi-faceted photographers of the 20th century, Cecil Beaton's (1904-1980) captivating portraits will be exhibited for the first time in Turkey at Pera Museum. The exhibition focusing on Oscar winning costume designer Cecil Beaton is curated by Terence Pepper, the Senior Advisor on Photographs at the National Portrait Gallery in London, and will include portraits of artists, actors, writers, intellectuals and royalty from between 1920s to the 1970s, from the collection of Sotheby's Cecil Beaton Studio Archive. Cecil Beaton worked in a variety of media ranging from painting, illustration, caricature, theatre and film costume design (winning two Oscars for the latter category for 'Gigi' and 'My Fair Lady'), as well as being a best-selling author, photographic historian, diarist, and occasional actor. However it is as a photographer that most critics agree that he made his most important contribution to the arts. Beaton's photographs define a glittering generation, as he captured from behind his camera lens the great and famous personalities of the 1920s to the 1970s - from eminent artists, to iconic actors, influential philosophers, and international royalty. These intimate portraits tell the story behind the public veneer of the sitter, illuminating their private lives and relationships with Beaton himself.

"This exhibition, curated by Edith Devaney, Curator of Contemporary Projects at the Royal Academy of Arts, London, presents a survey of Stephen Chambers' painting and graphic works, shown alongside his vast multi-part print, The Big Country. This selection seeks to explore the origins of The Big Country (2012), demonstrating that its development is firmly rooted in the artist's past practice and deeply indebted to the European tradition of art. The sense of a story being told is a feature of many of Chambers' works, and writings are often a stimulus for this, as seen in Chambers' Flemish Proverbs series, which are also exhibited. Inspired by the landscape and scale of the American Western film The Big Country (1958), Chambers' immense work explores a myriad of fictional encounters between real and imagined historical figures. The notion of the journey and discovery of new lands has here expanded into a depiction of the five continents and the points of departure from one continent to another, raising a fascinating take on the perils and challenges of migration. Stephen Chambers is primarily a painter, however printmaking has always formed a significant part of his work. He has noted in the past that prints produced by artists whose main discipline is not printmaking, can often be the most compelling. For such artists, print-making offers another element of expression and provides an opportunity to experiment, a notion which is borne out in Chambers' finished monumental work.".
