Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A multipronged study of Africa's innovative approaches to communal living in the face of climate change and urbanizationThis volume presents essays, stories, research and photographs showing how African cities by waterfronts deal with two of the most significant trends of our time: urbanization and a changing climate. On the African continent, the impact of climate change is now an everyday reality. Coastal and waterfront cities in particular experience loss and damage due to significant increases in sea level rise, rainfall and flooding. At the same time, Africa is the second most rapidly urbanizing continent (after Asia). The intersections between water and cities are therefore critical for understanding the future of urban and rural developments in Africa. Through deeper understanding of the innovative and resourceful way of life of informal water communities such as Makoko and coastal cities such as Abidjan, African Water Cities reveals key factors, challenges and opportunities shaping human, physical and economic dynamics. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Through stunning aerial and street photography, Iwan Baan pays tribute to one of Dutch modernism's most influential urban designersThe celebrated Dutch architectural photographer Iwan Baan (born 1975) has dedicated his career to capturing the stories told by buildings. This publication compiles his series on Willem Marinus Dudok (1884-1974), known as the father of Dutch modernism. Decades after their construction, Dudok's designs remain keenly relevant for their exceptional spatial sensitivity. In this series, Baan expands his lens to encompass Dudok as a designer not only of singular buildings but of whole landscapes in which people are able to live, work and learn. Through impressive aerial and street photography, Baan conveys the breadth of Dudok's practice as an urban designer, focusing in particular on his ability to expand metropolitan neighborhoods in a way that felt entirely natural. Additional insight into Dudok's craft and its lasting influence on contemporary European architecture is provided by architectural historian Lara Voerman. Over the course of nearly 40 years, Dutch artist Jan Schoonhoven (1914-94) produced works on paper and sculptural reliefs, while maintaining his job as a civil servant employed by the Dutch Post Office. This new monograph places the artist, one of the most important Dutch artists of the 20th century, in an international context, arguing for his role as an influential player in European art after the Second World War. From his central position in the Netherlandish Informal Group, associated with Art Informel, to his later involvement with the Dutch Nul group, part of the international ZERO network, Schoonhoven participated in two of the most important currents of postwar European abstraction from his hometown of Delft. This volume features many hitherto unknown works and photographs, and sheds new light on the work of the "master of white." Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. A fascinating and fun look at the comical, ingenious world of Renaissance trick glassesAt the end of the 16th century, ingeniously designed glasses created for various drinking games began to appear in Europe. The glasses stimulated a sense of togetherness, provided entertainment value and, of course, encouraged drunkenness. The tricks varied significantly: some were quite overt--unusually shaped glasses such as a boot, horn or gun--and others stealthy, such as normal-looking glasses that splashed wine all over the drinker. Still others emitted strange noises when drunk from. It is precisely their playful character that rendered them technical tours de force, the pinnacle of what glassblowers could fashion at the time. The glasses showcased the skills of their makers along with the wealth and standing of their owners. For this amusing, delightful and impressive volume, internationally renowned glass expert Kitty Lameris and glass artist Marc Barreda conducted large-scale research into the use and history of trick glasses. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Jansen's iconic bamboo shoe as both fashion item and art objectDutch designer Jan Jansen (born 1941) has been turning heads with his baroque and experimental footwear for more than 40 years, and his work has been dubbed "Dutch haute chaussure." Jansen made his international breakthrough in 1973 with his now world-famous bamboo shoe, an icon beloved by the fashion world and art lovers alike. In this comprehensively illustrated book, author Lisa Goudsmit looks at Jansen's bamboo shoe both as fashion item and art object, relating the story of how this shoe design became iconic. The book also highlights other designs in Jan Jansen's extensive and flamboyant oeuvre. In addition, Goudsmit examines Prada's notorious 2005 copy of the bamboo shoe, which Jansen cynically dubbed "an affectionate adoption." She investigates the possible impact of this copy on the image of both the shoe and of the designer. This is a book for shoe fetishists and lovers of Dutch design, fashion and art. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Husband-and-wife team Gijs Bakker (born 1942) and Emmy van Leersum (1930-1984) are internationally recognized as pioneers in the field of modern jewelry design. Together, they created an extensive oeuvre of minimalistic, futuristic jewelry from unorthodox materials, including Plexiglas, aluminum and even stovepipes. Their avant-garde jewelry and clothing fuse fashion, design and art. The Gijs + Emmy Spectacle focuses on the early, collective work of the artistic duo, from 1967 to 1972. In May 1967, Gijs and Emmy presented their designs in a spectacular show at the Stedelijk Museum: with its futuristic clothing, large aluminum neck bands, avant-garde styling and electronic music, this show placed them in the vanguard of modern youth culture in one fell swoop. Author Marjan Boot has reconstructed and expanded upon this sensational fashion show, exhibiting it at the Stedelijk Museum and capturing it in this volume, which includes a DVD of Lex Reitsma's film about the duo. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A look at the marketing, packaging and design choices that transform food into productsOn a daily basis, tens of thousands of food products fight for our attention in supermarkets. It's a miracle that we manage to choose what we want from the overwhelming supply. Designers play a crucial role in this. They package food and transform it into products that appeal, inform and seduce us. The designer is the indispensable mediator between the producer and us, the consumer. As artisans of alienation, designers make up stories, create illusions and dream images.Food Is Fiction places these stories in the context of the rise of the food industry and contemplating the future of food. Drawing on historical and contemporary visual material ranging from early advertising for classic brands such as Van Houten and Van Nelle to "food pornography," astronaut food and gastrophysics, Linda Roodenburg (author of the Rotterdam Cook Book) shows how the designer's language conforms to the spirit of the times, uses stereotypes and prejudices or anticipates social changes. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Cycle Space is the first book to view the city through the lens--or rearview mirror--of the bicycle. It features portraits of eight major cities and their respective cycling cultures: New York, Chicago, Portland, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Budapest, Sao Paolo, Singapore and Sydney. Each of these cities has seen a groundswell of cyclists taking to its streets in recent years. From death-defying bike messengers to hipsters with a taste for cycle chic to commuters simply riding to work, cycling is now being viewed as more than just an alternative: it's practical; it's cool; it's green. In Cycle Space, architecture professor and cycling enthusiast Steven Fleming (or Dr. Behooving, as he is known to those who follow his blog, Behooving Moving) suggests new ways of designing better cities, thereby reducing emissions, commute times, ill health and sprawl in the process. Not only can architecture and urban design begin to optimize conditions for cycling; they can also take inspiration from the aesthetics and ethics of cycling as well. Fleming argues that understanding why more and more people are choosing bikes is key for discovering the full potential of the bicycle as a transformative force in the design of our cities. Cycle Space is a must-read for anyone interested in the nexus of architecture, cycling and urban design. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Ornament is back--not as detail adorning a facade, but in the body of entire structures, producing buildings in the shape of letters, a heap of pebbles or a national emblem. In Building as Ornament, Michiel van Raaij investigates how this new tendency in architecture emerged in the late 1990s and how it has developed at the start of the twenty-first century, through interviews with ten leading architects, among them Adriaan Geuze, Michiel Riedijk, Winy Maas, Steven Holl and Bjarke Ingels. This generation of architects sees the design of the 'upscaled' ornament as an inextricable element of their practice. What are their motivations? How do they orient their ideas in the tradition of their profession? Michiel van Raaij argues that "the new ornament" is bound by certain rules: successful ornament represents a virtue and clarifies the function, status, construction, organization and context of the building. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A previously unpublished photobook gem from Ed van der Elsken, the enfant terrible of Dutch photography famed for Love on the Left BankAround 1960, Ed van der Elsken assembled a photobook on the theme of feasts. Drawing from both old and new work, he produced a dazzling sequence of festive occasions: fun, celebration, dancing, music, fairs, carnivals, excitement and euphoria, but also drunkenness and exhaustion in the early hours. Van der Elsken combined his photographs into sparkling and rhythmical pairings, so that a genuine sense of joy emanates from the pages. Nonetheless, for reasons unknown, the work was left on the shelf. Feest was, therefore, one of the great surprises in Van der Elsken's archive when it was acquired by the Rijksmuseum and the Nederlands Fotomuseum in 2019. Now, 60 years after the photographer worked on the design with scissors and tape, this lively book is being published after all, in the intimate and compact format that he originally envisaged. Ed van der Elsken (1925-90) began photographing in Holland in the late 1940s. In the 1950s he left Holland for Paris, where he encountered and documented the bohemian society of Saint-Germain-de-Pres, including the protagonists of the Lettrist and Situationist International. At the suggestion of Edward Steichen, whom van der Elsken met in Paris, he rendered these images as a photographic novel, Love on the Left Bank, which brought him instant fame. Van der Elsken went on to publish numerous books, including Bagara (1957), Jazz (1959), Sweet Life (1966), Eye Love You (1977), Amsterdam! (1979) and Once upon a Time (1981). The impressive and controversial new wing, designed by Benthem Crouwel Architekten and popularly known as "the bathtub," anchors the legendary museum firmly in the twenty-first century, allowing much more room for its famed collection of modern and contemporary art and design. Published for the occasion, Stedelijk Architecture examines the renovation, in photographs by the internationally renowned architecture photographer Iwan Baan, plus floor plans, cross sections and details of the new structure. Architecture critic Hans Ibelings relates the museum's history from the 1895 inauguration of the original building (designed by architect Adriaan Weissman) to the completion of the controversial extension, and architect Mels Crouwel discusses the building in an interview. Whimsical clocks, poetic glass sculptures and colorful textile collages: on the playful imagination of Kiki van EijkOver the past 20 years, the Dutch designer Kiki van Eijk (born 1978) has created an extensive oeuvre including carpets, tapestries, lamps, glassware, furniture and sculptural objects. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. Across the world, cities are encouraging cycling to make their centers livable again.Could cycling actually become a key organizing principle for future urban growth and the design of new buildings? What would cities designed for cycling look like and feel like? What is needed to make the perfect cycling city? In Velotopia: The Production of Cyclespace in Our Minds and Our Cities, architectural theorist and historian Steven Fleming, a leading international figure in bicycle urbanism and author of the bestselling Cycle Space (2013), argues that the best-connected cities in the future will be those that put cycling before walking and public transport. According to Fleming, cities organized around cycling will be greener and healthier, but also fairer and more accessible than today's cities--more productive, comfortable, social and fun. In this volume, Fleming dares readers to think big, to radically reimagine cities and city life around movement on two wheels. The first bike-centric model of urban planning and building design, Velotopia is a book for designers, planners, students, advocates and the general reader--all those shaping cities and the built environment who imagine a future for the cycling city.
