Eija-Liisa Ahtila, née à Hämeenlinna le 6 août 1959, est une artiste multimédia vivant et travaillant à Helsinki, Finlande. epuis les années 1990, Eija-Liisa Ahtila aaraît comme une des figures centrales d'une génération qui a rapproché cinéma et vidéo. Artiste multimédia et cinéaste, peintre de formation et adepte des technologies numériques, son travail est aussi présent dans les grands festivals de cinéma, sur le petit écran (publicités) que dans le domaine de l'art. Un même projet peut être montré sur différents supports et prendre différentes formes. Travaillant dans un contexte post-cinématographique, elle entreprend un inventaire de tous les langages cinématographiques qui existe. Il s'agit d'appréhender le médium cinéma dans sa globalité, de se l'approprier comme un simple moyen d'expression et d'en explorer les limites. Elle utilise cependant un cinéma très professionnel, très loin d'un cinéma conceptuel, d'une mise en pratique d'une question théorique. Ces oeuvres passent en 35 mm au cinéma et les mêmes films servent à produire de grandes installations dans le domaine de l'art. Chez Ahtila, le multi écran est le dispositif idéal de ces expérimentations. La mise en scène y est démultipliée, ce qui provoque le sentiment d'une narration éclatée, d'une forme d'irréalité et c'est le spectateur, se trouvant au milieu de l'action, qui construit l'histoire finale. Ce travail s'inscrit très clairement dans le domaine du récit. La narration se fait aussi bien par le texte que par l'image. Ses histoires sont un mélange de reportage-documentaire (le réel), de fiction (le symbolique) et de fantastique (le virtuel). L'utilisation d'effets spéciaux lui serve à rendre visible les rêves et l'inconscient, sans pour autant vouloir effacer la frontière entre le réel et l'imaginaire. Les dialogues reposent sur les recherches et expériences de celle-ci et les personnages de ses films sont joués par des acteurs professionnels, tout est calculé, rien n'est laissé au hasard. Ce qui apparaît donc dans ses films n'est que de la fiction. La bande son est en version finlandaise, les films sont sous-titrés en anglais. Sur le plan du contenu, les oeuvres d'Ahtila traduisent des états intérieurs, des états psychologiques, des émotions, des styles de vie. Elle tourne sans cesse autour des thèmes comme l'amour, la sexualité, la colère, le deuil, la réconciliation, l'identité, les désirs. Il y a toujours quelque chose de nerveux, d'impatient et cette rapidité constitue elle-même un matériau. Son travail porte sur des questions d'émotion mais pas d'identification. Les émotions ne sont pas vécues, au contraire, le spectateur est mis à distance. Il est tout de suite question du rôle et de la place du spectateur. Celui-ci se trouve dans un environnement de projection, de disposition classique, volontairement proche du dispositif cinématographique classique. Ce qui a pour conséquence de le plonger dans un sentiment d'immédiateté, dans un état psychique complexe. Chez Ahtila, des événements antérieurs sont évoqués et le spectateur est toujours plongé dans une situation d'après cou L'oeuvre sert à exorciser ce qui s'est passé. C'est pour cela qu'elle expose très rapidement la situation ainsi que la forme du film. C'est une manière de donner aux spectateurs le plus d'information possible pour le libérer, se concentrer et porter son attention sur les questions formelles. She was something of "Texas royalty", as her parents were Robert Lee Blaffer, one of the founders of Humble Oil (now Exxon), and Sarah Campbell, whose father was one of the founders of the Texas Co. (now Texaco). She later became a princess by virtue of her marriage in 1975 to Prince Tassilo von Furstenberg of Austria. The nuptials in Paris were attended by Princess Grace, and in a nod to her Texas heritage, the bride reportedly wore boots beneath her wedding dress. Signed by Author(s).
