Laminated boards, small 8vo, 22 cm, xv, 266 pp. From the blurb: "Irish Booksellers and English Writers looks at what are often called pirated editions of English writers, focusing on Richardson, Fielding, Smollett, Sterne, Johnson, Boswell, Goldsmith and Gibbon. It shows how Irish booksellers reprinted London editions without authorization and then sold them at reduced prices not only in Ireland but in Britain and especially in the United States. It is ironic that by such piracy the Irish book trade brought the works of these writers to a wider audience than they would otherwise have had. Moreover, between 1750 and 1820, more than one hundred Irish printers and booksellers emigrated to the United States, at first importing reprints from their former colleagues in Dublin but soon issuing their own reprints in Philadelphia, New York and Baltimore. The outstanding member of this group was Mathew Carey, prototype of the modern publisher and founder of America's first publishing house, Lea and Febiger, which celebrated its bicentennial in 1985. In addition, fifteen others have earned listings in the Dictionary of American Biography for their achievements in publishing and related fields. This book will be of interest to scholars and students of eighteenth-century studies, English literature, history of the book trade, copyright law, Irish and American history, as well as to antiquarian book dealers, bibliographers, genealogists and students of library science." Very Good.
