In this ground-breaking history Elinor Cleghorn unpacks the roots of the perpetual misunderstanding, mystification and misdiagnosis of women s bodies, illness and pain. Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. London. Weidenfeld and Nicholson/Orion Publishing Group. 2019. First Edition. Second Impression. Hard Cover Medium 8vo 9½" x 6 [24cm x 15cm] approx. 340 pp. Dove grey boards with gilt titles to the spine. Two sets of glossy colour and black and white photographs accompany the text. Unclipped dust wrapper with photography to both panels. Book and jacket are as new. A biography which reveals the man behind McKellen the actor. The inside story of the person himself: a constantly developing drama and a work in progress. Yet Garry O Connor pulls no punches: some of his revelations may be controversial to his fans, even explosive, given McKellen s constant ability to shock and surprise. The author has himself directed for the Royal Shakespeare Company, and directed McKellen in some of his very first roles. This is an unflinching, yet deeply intimate and affectionate story. Hardcover. Condición: As New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: As New. 1st Edition. London. Weidenfeld & Nicholson/Orion Publishing Group. 2004. First edition; fourth printing. Hard Cover. Handsome burgundy boards with gilt spine titles. Signed by the author to the title page and wrapper bears an Althorp literary festival. Glossy colour photography in the text By the summer of 1704 Louis XIV's vast armies dominated Europe. France defeated every alliance formed against her. Blenheim was a major turning point in European history. Charles Spencer's narrative is drawn from original sources and moves seamlessly from the deliberations of kings and princes to the frontline soldiers. This is the battle that creates the enduring reputation of the British redcoat and shatters the image of the 'Sun King' and his mighty army.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. London. Weidenfeld and Nicholson/Orion Publishing Group. 2000. Originally published in 1976, reprint. Demy 8vo, 8¾" x 5½" [22 x 14 cm] approx. Black boards with silver titles to the spine. Nine glossy black and white photographic reproductions in the text. Dust wrapper picture by the author. Unclipped at £14.99. Book and jacket are fine. William Laird McKinlay was a twenty-five-year-old Scottish schoolteacher when he set out as meteorologist on this 1913 expedition to the Arctic. Barely before the expedition had begun Karluk, their ship, was crushed and sunk in ice. He narrates the story of the crew¿s nightmare struggle for survival in the face of ignorance, lack of leadership and appalling conditions. No attempt had been made to select the crew for compatibility or strength of character, and they were untrained in any skills essential to survival in the Arctic. So they were left stranded in the Arctic ice while their leader continued his northern exploration, not returning for five years. Eight men died moving across the heaving ice floes, one man shot himself, two died of malnutrition and the rest barely managed to keep alive until rescue came. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 1st Edition. London. Weidenfeld and Nicholson/Orion Publishing Group. 1999. First Edition. Assumed first printing. No Edition Remarks. Hard Cover. Medium 8vo 9½" x 6 [24cm x 15cm] approx. 256 pp. Jade green coloured boards with gilt titles to the spine. A couple of minor dents to the upper board and softening at the head of the spine. Map endpapers. Pristine contents with glossy colour photography in the text. Flat signed by the author without dedication to the illustrated title page. Loosely laid in newspaper article dated October 1999 about the Australian billionaire Kerry Packer. Unclipped jacket shows photograph of Sydney Harbour. Small areas of wear at the spine ends and one corner but hardly discernible. Jacket and book are both near fine. The author brilliantly describes the city, its appetites, and its character-from its colonial beginnings to its becoming the host city of the 2000 Olympics. Its harbour establishes it as one of the most attractive modern cities, but its beginnings suggest something different. In 1770, the British Parliament saw the area as a solution to England's overcrowded prisons. On arriving at the harbour, the first "convicts" found themselves in one of the hottest climates in the world, and were greeted by aboriginal natives whose curiosity was matched only by their desire for the newcomers to leave. Uncommon in signed state. The jacket will be covered with an inert archival protective sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional photographs. She's covered Bosnian women, Neo-Nazis and post-Katrina New Orleans (for which she won an Oscar), but now she's looking for an even bigger challenge. So she and her right-hand-man - a six-foot-six African-American called Xavier - head to Djibouti on the Horn of Africa to tackle modern-day pirates. Hunter Davies has visited twenty-seven Caribbean islands and produced a book which is part travel book, as he describes his wanderings around ten of these islands, and also a highly personal but very informative guide to all the islands. His ten islands include Barbados, Grenada, Tobago, St Lucia, Guadeloupe, Antigua and Cuba - some English speaking, some French and Spanish. Along the way, he tracks down ex-pats who have gone to live and work in the Caribbean, hoping for true happiness or at least a tan. He also talks to returnees - West Indians who after several decades in the UK have returned to their roots and experience different types of cultural shock. Signed by Author(s).

Christopher Meyer was Ambassador to the United States from 1997 to 2003, during which time he was an eyewitness to and participant in the events following 9/11 and the preparations for the Iraq war. Never before has there been such a riveting and candid memoir of life behind the diplomatic scenes. Meyer's is an honest account of what he saw, what he heard and how he felt. It was clear that the Prime Minister's office and not the Foreign Office would control relations with Washington, and Meyer shows in close up how he helped facilitate the 'special relationship'. 39 glossy colour illustrations in the text. For anyone whose definition of a diplomat is someone sent abroad to lie for their country, Christopher Meyer's memoir is the perfect rejoinder. It will also be hailed as one of the most important political memoirs of the decade. The dust jacket will be protected with a new inert archival quality acetate sleeve which is removable. Book and jacket have no notable wear and are fine. Michael Redgrave ranks with Olivier, Gielgud and Richardson as one of the great British actors of the 20th century. He wrote his memoirs, but these were noted as much for what he left out, including his complex private life. In his thirties he had an affair with Edith Evans, then England's leading actress and 20 years his senior. But he had realised his bisexuality while at university and soon began a series of homosexual affairs, which are revealed here - names are named - for the first time. This biography has exclusive access to the papers recently sold to the Theatre Museum and allow Strachan to tell stories that involve not only fellow actors, but Anthony Blunt, Alistair Cooke and the political left of the 30s, 40s and 50s. Strachan shows how the children - and now their children - have been influenced by Michael Redgrave. Strachan directed Redgrave in his last years and knows the family well.
