Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. London. Guild Publishing/John Murray (Publishers) Ltd. 1985. Published the same year as first printing by arrangement. Hard Cover. Post 4to 10" x 8" [25.4cm x 20cm] approx. 219 pp. Black boards with silver titles to the spine. Sharp corners. Pages are slightly age toned. Illustrated endpapers and profusely illustrated throughout the text. Unclipped dust jacket with slight knocks at the corners and some minor handling wear along the top edge. Very good plus condition. Front cover shows 'Dinner by Gaslight in the Thames Tunnel in 1827'. Rear shows men at work on the outfall sewer. Drawing extensively from the literature and visual archives of the underworld, London under London traces the history of the tunnellers and borers who have pierced the ground beneath the city for close on two thousand years. The authors trace the routes taken by man and nature, and enable us to follow them from the comfort of our armchairs. They can also tell us, gazetteer-style, exactly where we can get below and see the strange world which they depict, whom to ask for permission, and which of the public service authorities organizes trips underground. This book is one of the most popular on London and has been reprinted many times since this edition to take account of developments. The dust jacket will be protected with a new inert archival quality sleeve which is removable. Please contact us if you would like any more information or additional images. 'Never before had the world seen four such giants co-existing. Sometimes friends, more often enemies, always rivals, these four men together held Europe in the hollow of their hands.' Four great princes - Henry VIII of England, Francis I of France, Charles V of Spain and Suleiman the Magnificent - were born within a single decade. Each looms large in his country's history and, in this book, John Julius Norwich broadens the scope and shows how, against the rich background of the Renaissance and destruction of the Reformation, their wary obsession with one another laid the foundations for modern Europe. Individually, each man could hardly have been more different - from the scandals of Henry's six wives to Charles's monasticism - but, together, they dominated the world stage. From the Field of the Cloth of Gold, a pageant of jousting, feasting and general carousing so lavish that it nearly bankrupted both France and England, to Suleiman's celebratory pyramid of 2,000 human heads (including those of seven Hungarian bishops) after the battle of Mohács; from Anne Boleyn's six-fingered hand (a potential sign of witchcraft) that had the pious nervously crossing themselves to the real story of the Maltese falcon, Four Princes is history at its vivid, entertaining best. With a cast list that extends from Leonardo da Vinci to Barbarossa, and from Joanna the Mad to le roi grand-nez, John Julius Norwich offers the perfect guide to the most colourful century the world has ever known and brings the past to unforgettable life. Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. Jacket by Ed Kluz Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression with '1' on copyright page. Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners very slightly rubbed, price clipped, no inscriptions, internally clean, tight and squareish, overall a vg copy. 258pp. Nick Hunt, who previously set off across Europe in the footsets of Paddy Leigh Fermor, sets off on an unlikely quest: to follow four of Europe's winds across the continent. His wind walks begin on Cross Fell, the highest point of the Pennines, as he chases the roaring Helm, the only named wind in Britain. In southern Europe he follows the Bora, a bitter northerly that blows from Trieste through Slovenia and down the Croatian coast. His hunt for the 'snow eating' Foehn becomes a meandering journey of exhilaration and despair through the Alpine valleys of Switzerland, and his final walk traces an ancient pilgrims' path in the south of France on the trail of the Mistral, the 'wind of madness' which animated and tormented Vincent Van Gogh. These are journeys into wild wind, but also into wild landscapes and the people who inhabit them, a cast of meteorologists, storm chasers, mountain men, eccentric wind enthusiasts, sailors and shepherds. Soon Nick finds himself borne along by the very forces he is pursuing, through rain, blizzards, howling gales, and back through time itself. For, where the wild winds are, there are also myths and legends, history and hearsay, science and superstition and occasionally remote mountain cabins packed with pickles, cured meats and homemade alcohol.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good Indeed. None Ilustrador. Seven very scarce twentieth century medical publications by Geoffrey Keynes, including four essays on the topic of the thymectomy, a surgery Keynes himself pioneered. Seven exceptionally scarce medical works by prominent twentieth century surgeon and bibliographer Geoffrey Keynes. The earliest work present here is Keynes's very scarce 1924 edition of Sir Thomas Browne's 'Notes for a Lecture on the Skin'. Keynes offers an introduction to a brief collection of notes made by Browne in the late seventeenth century on the subject of human skin. The second work present is the British Medical Journal's very scarce 1949 printing of Keynes's fifteen page essay 'The Results of Thymectomy in Myasthenia Gravis', based upon a lecture he gave in the July of that year. Keynes pioneered the removal of the thymus gland, which is now the standard treatment for myasthenia gravis. The essay 'Thymectomy for Myasthenia Gravis', reprinted from the Bristol Medico-Chirurgical Journal, No. 240, Vol. LXVI.Also present is Keynes's study 'Thymus Gland', drawn from the eighth volume of the British Surgical Practice journal, and the 1952 lecture 'Thymus', drawn from the February 1953 volume o the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England'.The final two works are two discussions of 'notable acquisitions for the library', published in the Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. The first work is 'The Anatomy of Thomas Geminus' (1959), and the second is 'The Epitome of Vesalius' (1961).Geoffrey Keynes began his career as a First World War surgeon, before making notable innovations in the fields of blood transfusion and breast cancer surgery. He was also a publishing scholar and bibliographer of English literature and English medical history, focusing primarily on William Blake and William Harvey. In the publisher's original paper wraps. Externally, generally excellent. Light spotting surrounding staples to front wrap of one volume only. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Very Good Indeed. book.
