Softcover. Condición: Fine. First Edition Thus. From the personal library of the feminist art historian extraordinaire, Dr. Whitney Chadwick, a giant across many fields. Sterling condition softcover copy, with unfurled tips, tight binding, and clean internals, showing only very slight shelf- and edge-wear. Glossy illustrated wraps. 343 pp., plentiful color plates, ditto, black-and-white illustrations, to this First Edition Thus reader in Latin American art history. The editor himself contributes to a selection on influential essays that have informed critical discourse on the visual arts in Latin America. The 22 essays by Latin American art critics, says the editor, "most originally written in Spanish or Portuguese, examine feminism, multiculturalism, folk art, religious kitsch, governmental repression, and cultural identity. Although the focus of the book is on Spanish-speaking South and Central America, there are also discussions of Brazil, the Caribbean, and the Spanish-speaking communities of the United States. Yet these essays are by no means parochial examinations of purely local art; they are exceedingly well-written statements of universal interest written from the unique perspective of Latin America. Unfortunately, an appetite sharpened by the quality of the writing is not satisfied by the few illustrations, a loss for readers unfamiliar with the vast range of Latin American art. Recommended for all collections on contemporary art."Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.
