Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Perique, prized by connoisseurs as the strongest and most flavorful of tobacco varietals, is cultivated only one place on earth: a thirty-square-mile tract of land in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Harvested, bunched, and stemmed by hand, the tobacco is pressure-cured for a year in whiskey barrels. The labor-intensive cultivation process dates to the early nineteenth century; its rituals have descended as occupational folklore through a small group of St. James Parish families. Photographer Charles Martin spent eight years documenting the tradition of his forebears. Vulnerability lends urgency to this study: only a handful of working farms remain dedicated to perique cultivation, and fewer and fewer young people embrace the agricultural lifestyle of their parents and grandparents. Martin's photographs epitomize local history in their painstaking documentation of a place-specific process. Yet in their framing, and in their ability to capture the dignity of human labor, they assume universal, iconic status.Contains 50 black & white images. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Josephine Marien Crawford (1878 - 1952) was inspired by cubism and the flattened forms and minimalist approach of modernism. As contemporary Times-Picayune arts critic Alberta Collier described her work, "this is old New Orleans, caught by the keen eye and trained brush of one of her native daughters." Hoffman provides a glimpse of Crawford's personality and skillfully recreates the Paris and New Orleans art worlds of the first half of the twentieth century, with paintings and drawings by the renowned New Orleans artist and works by Andre Lhote. Contains 97 colour images, 53 black-and-white images Louise C. Hoffman traces Crawford's career from the academy of French master Andre Lhote to galleries in New Orleans, New York, Philadelphia, and Central America. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. New Orleans thrived under Spanish rule (1762-1803), linked through trade and empire to the nerve centers of the circum-Caribbean. This book explores the far-reaching ways in which the Spanish influence is evident in the city to this day, in architecture, agriculture, science, and the arts. The Spanish period saw shifts in the legal landscape surrounding slavery, as well as the dramatic growth of the city's population of free people of color. The daily lives of New Orleanians, and the city's constant interaction with the Caribbean and the greater Spanish empire, are documented in the surviving examples of material culture, maps, manuscripts, and artworks presented here. Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Louisiana Lens surveys 180 years of photographic encounters with one of Americas most evocative regions: from early daguerreotypes of New Orleans landmarks to haunting postCivil War landscapes to born-digital photographs documenting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Author John H. Lawrence traces the development of photographic equipment and technical processes alongside the evolution of New Orleans and Louisiana over nearly two centuries. Lawrence provides an illuminating narrative for each photograph: whether offering insight into a photographs composition or sharing his firsthand knowledge of the photographers themselves, he brings a keen perspective honed by decades of curatorial work. In surveying these selections, Lawrence touches on themes of architecture, music, commerce, race, arts and culture, and the changing landscapes and geographies of the US south. The author was responsible for building THNOCs photographic collection during his four decades at the institution. This volume serves as both a capstone of Lawrences career and a valuable survey of Louisiana photography. Louisiana Lens celebrates the achievement of one of Americas leading photography curators, with works ranging from earlydaguerreotypes of city landmarks to born-digital photographs documenting the devastation of Hurricane Katrina.
