Most people associate her with close up flower painting, with images of format~filling totem~like animal skulls, and with the mythic figure of the artist herself as depicted in photographs by Alfred Steglitz. This mongraph on Georgia O'Keefe encourages a more intensive encoutner with her work: idiosyncratic paintings characterized by a state of suspension. Her bold picture conceptions and spatial designs are balanced between image and abstraction, between close~up and monumentality, nature representation and artificiality. Georgia O'Keefe absorbed various infulences early in her career~European and Amerian Modernism, for instance, and later those of native cultures~but from the very beginning, her tonal appication of pigment and her photographic manner of compostiion served to distinguish her from the European tradition, leading her to stylizations which are even called "pre~Pop.".

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. Photographically illustrated paper-covered boards; no dust jacket as issued. Paintings, installations and works in various media by Matthew Ritchie. Essays by Lynn M. Herbert, Laura Steward Heon, Jenelle Porter, and a conversation with the artist by Thyrza Nichols Goodeve. Includes a catalogue of the exhibition, biography, exhibition history, list of artist's projects and a bibliography. 136 pp., with 55 four-color and 40 black-and-white plates. 8-3/4 x 11-1/8 inches. Published on the occasion of an exhibition at the Contemporary Arts Museum, Houston. Fine. From the publisher: "In 1995, British artist Matthew Ritchie embarked on an extraordinary undertaking: he set out to tell the story of everything, from the Big Bang onward. His tale was to be told in paintings and drawings through a core group of 49 characters drawn from sources as diverse as mythology, quantum physics, alchemy, gambling, biblical tales, and pulp fiction. With Proposition Player, Ritchie's first major solo museum exhibition and accompanying catalogue, his narrative has reached a 'climax, collapse, and crisis'--the story has morphed into a game and Ritchie has created a veritable information casino. Accompanying the paintings and drawings for which the artist is internationally known are works in new media, including a 100-foot-long three-dimensional drawing, an interactive craps table with digital animation that invites viewers to roll the dice for the future of the universe, an enormous rubble floor mosaic that invites viewers to walk into the heart of the piece, and a deck of cards featuring Ritchie's cast of characters.".

Pictorial Boards. Condición: Fine. First Edition. 112pp, 40 color illustrations. Text in German and English. Designed by Jung und Pfeffer. This is the lovely hardbound book published in conjunction with German photographer Peter Bialobrzeski's 2004 exhibition of luminous images of the architectural details of Asian megalopolises Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok, Singapore, Shenzhen, and Kuala Lumpur held at Bremen's Museum der Arbeit. Contrasting decaying blocks of flats with under-construction skyscrapers, "Neon Tigers" bears more than a passing resemblance to the urban dystopia of "Blade Runner" - especially in its sodium light drenched night skylines. A brand new, pristine example still in the publisher's shrinkwrap. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.
