Paperback. Condición: Very Good. When it comes to money, Bernard Jones is a bit of a dunce. The retired civil servant and amateur investor discovers that when share prices start plunging his wealth falls even faster. As the credit crunch bites, he and his share club cronies at the Ring o'Bells pub find they can't bank on a bank, build wealth on a housebuilder, nor rely on a retailer. Bernard can, however, rely on his domineering wife Eunice. A woman of persistent passion and advancing dress size, she single-handedly keeps Britain's consumer spending alive. From sustainable teak gnocchi spoons to Andalucian macrame shoe organisers, there isn't much you can teach Eunice about stocking up on essentials. Though Eunice runs the household with a rod of organic celery, Bernard is never quite defeated. His elevenses of biscuits and cakes may be switched for endive and papaya salad, his prostate prodded, his railway modeling hobby ridiculed, but he comes out fighting. With a mordant eye and caustic pen, he goes in to battle not just against the injustices of marriage, but on behalf of the financially downtrodden everywhere. For those who lost money on Northern Rock, those who were short-changed by Equitable Life and those who were gobbled up by the wolves of the stock market, Bernard Jones is your champion, an anti-hero for our age of over-achievement. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. In this revealing new book, top trader Robbie Burns cuts through the jargon to give you the low-down on the strategies you need to make money from share dealing. Robbie, aka the Naked Trader, is an expert and highly entertaining guide to the sometimes baffling world of the stock market. In between cups of tea, rounds of toast and the occasional 'cuddle' with Mrs Naked Trader, he describes the straightforward techniques that have enabled him to succeed in the markets and escape the rat race. The book kicks off with the basics such as: the best websites, magazines and newspapers to look at; the kit you need to get cracking; and some key tips for choosing a broker. Robbie, then, gives you the essential techniques for picking the good shares and, just as importantly, avoiding the bad ones, and finishes up with some more advanced topics like how to make money even when shares fall. Along the way you also get the chance to spend a day with the Naked Trader with an exclusive extract from his private (and revealing) diary. Throughout, everything is explained in plain (sometimes too plain! - Ed) English and with a sense of humour, honesty and enthusiasm rarely found in books about money. Not afraid to bare his soul (among other things) the Naked Trader even reveals some of the painful mistakes that he has made in the markets to help make sure that you do not fall into the same traps. There may not be any guaranteed short cuts to trading success (as an important Naked Trader rule states - 'If it sounds too good to be true it probably is'), but this book gives you everything that you need to learn to trade successfully, and perhaps even escape the 9 to 5 slog like the Naked Trader has. Packed with practical advice and delivered in a down-to-earth style, this book is all you need to get started. So, grab your laptop and get trading - your naked future awaits! The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Paul Mumford is a noted stock-picker with over 50 years' experience in the markets - first as a stock broker and then as a star fund manager. In The Stock Picker, Mumford takes a deeply personal look back at his time investing: exploring not only the secrets of his successful approach to the markets and how to find great shares but reminiscing about the changes that have taken place in the investing world since the early 1960s. This book is not an investing how-to: instead it is a financial history straight from the horse's mouth. While there is much for investors to learn from, it is an also evocative window into a vanished City of stock jobbers, messenger boys, luncheon vouchers and ledger-keepers - not to mention financial crises, booms and busts, and the life and death of companies great and small. Mumford also covers how his own personal life has influenced his stock-picking approach: from running his own bookmaking business as a schoolboy to an ill-fated attempt at oil painting at night school (not to mention the vibrant music scene of the late 1950s).The Stock Picker is a charming and readable autobiography that pulls no punches - ideal for any investor interested in what has made a leading fund manager tick, or who simply wants to spend some time nostalgically looking back at how the investing and wider world has changed over the years. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 'A heart-warming, inspirational tale of a woman trying to run a business while having me as a son' - Jeremy Clarkson. 'Originally made one Christmas as a present for Shirley's and her husband Eddie's children Jeremy and Joanna, the bear remains a classic of its kind - one which still gives me pleasure whenever I see it - and it served as a kind of yardstick when judging other products. Some things, like Concorde and the Jaguar XK120, look right from the word go. It was created with love and it was born with that indefinable something known as star quality. You either have it or you don't' - Michael Bond, author of the "Paddington Bear" stories. "Bearly Believable" is the hilarious story of how Shirley Clarkson grew her company, Gabrielle Designs, from a tiny spare-room business selling tea cosies in Doncaster into an international business shipping Paddington Bears all over the world .and then watched it collapse. With no business experience, no capital, just GBP100 of backing, and a copy of Michael Bond's book for inspiration, Shirley came up with the original - now classic - Paddington. Manufacturing from a collection of ramshackle farm buildings, she was hit by a wave of orders from retailers, as the world went Paddington-crazy. From Tokyo to Sydney to San Francisco, everybody wanted him. As sales skyrocketed, Shirley and her husband Eddie experienced the giddy feeling of success, then the stresses of growth. Turnover leapt to a million a year, Gabrielle Designs was hailed as a British success story, and Shirley was invited to meet the Queen on her visit to Doncaster Mansion House. Meanwhile, storm clouds gathered. The workforce went on strike, 50,000 bears had to be recalled because of faulty eyes, Eddie was ill in bed for a year, and the pipes at the factory burst. Shirley employed a professional manager to rescue the situation - who turned out to be illiterate, dishonest, and incompetent. The '70s moved on, the craze faded, and the tide went out on Paddington as fast as it had come in. Shirley tells her rollercoaster story with warmth, modesty and a blunt Yorkshire wit. For fans of Paddington, her book provides a delightful insight into how a simple bear became a worldwide icon; for students of business, it provides lessons in how to create a business and, more particularly, how not to run one; for those who appreciate tales of triumph and adversity, it is packed with more ups and downs than Paddington's paw in a jar of marmalade. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Have you ever thrown your arms up in despair while trying to complete an official form and asked yourself "Just what is the point of this?" You're not alone. Red tape in Britain has reached epidemic proportions. In just 12 months the Government produced a shocking 3,621 pieces of legislation, running to a total of 98,600 pages. That's 70 times as long as War and Peace! If it wasn't so serious, it would be quite funny. In this new book, Ross Clark exposes some of the most petty and bizarre rules and regulations which are blighting the lives of Britons today. From the 45 pages of instructions on how to correctly label a goat (or sheep) to the impact that being a deep-sea diver might have on your tax return. Among his other discoveries are: that there are 279 different tax forms for businesses alone, asking a total of 6,614 questions; the notes explaining the Treasury's 'simplified' pensions' regime ran to 1,369 pages; the law allows you to kill or give away a bullfinch - but not to sell or barter it; a woman from Kilbride was given an ASBO forbidding her from answering the door in her underwear; and a council spent GBP5,000 planting yew trees to screen a new children's play area. It then dug them up again after health and safety experts advised children could fall ill if they gobbled 'several handfuls' of leaves. All completely true and all contained, along with hundreds of others, in this eye-opening new book. Red tape and more red tape. One Police force discovered that it had a total of 1,150 different forms on which to report crimes. There are 1,300 pages of road traffic law - and that does not even include the law preventing petrol stations selling hot food after 11pm unless they apply for a licence. Employers must not hold important meetings on 31 October - it might discriminate against pagans, who, of course, celebrate the festival of Samhain on that day. A motorist in Waltham Forest, East London, was fined for parking on double yellow lines that were not even there when he parked his car. The lorry painting the lines had drawn around the stationary vehicle. The following things have been reported to be banned in at least one school: making daisy chains (risk of picking up germs); playing hopscotch (risk of injury); making anything out of egg boxes (fear of salmonella); putting hands up (makes pupils who don't have the answers feel victimised); and throwing paper aeroplanes (might cause eye injuries). The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 'The Origin of Financial Crises' provides a compelling analysis of the forces behind the recent economic crisis. In a series of disarmingly simple arguments George Cooper challenges the core principles of today's economic orthodoxy, explaining why financial markets do not obey the efficient market principles but are instead inherently unstable and habitually crisis prone. First published in the summer of 2008 in the midst of the crisis, the author accurately pinpointed the fundamental problems in policy and economic theory that led to the banking crisis. Now updated to reflect the massive upheavals since then and providing even more forthright opinions, the book is essential reading for anyone looking to find the root cause of our current financial situation. The book describes the evolution of our modern monetary system, explaining along the way how financial instability emerged and why this instability required the development of central banking.Cooper makes the point that misguided faith in the power of free markets has led some central banks to neglect their core role of managing the financial system and instead caused them to pursue policies promoting a series of ever more violent boom-bust cycles. 'The Origin of Financial Crises' calls for a radical shift in central bank strategy, the abandonment of inflation targeting and a paradigm shift in our attitude to economic policy. The reader will also learn about the fundamentals of inflation and discover what policy makers can learn from the designers of the Eurofighter jet and how an obscure paper on steam engines, written in 1868, shows us how to avoid repeating recent monetary policy mistakes. Uniquely, 'The Origin of Financial Crises' presents tangible policy proposals aimed at helping break out of the seemingly endless procession of damaging boom-bust cycles. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This is not your average book on technical analysis. Why? Because the author is not your average technical analyst; Brian Marber is unique -and so, as a result, is this book. Here, Marber sets out to write about his approach, in a language readers can understand and enjoy, telling them why he does what he does, and how he came to do it, including details of market pitfalls and the occasional Marber pratfall. The book does not claim to be comprehensive, but instead aims to be honest and to present the reader with the techniques and indicators that Marber himself uses, and has used successfully in his fifty-one years in the business. Although when you make money you can learn something about making it, you learn far more by losing it, then finding out how to stop doing so.This book tells you his methods; when positions have gone wrong, and what you do about it. Technical analysis is about running profits and, by using technically-oriented stops, cutting losses - not when it hurts but when, from a technical point of view, the position you're in becomes untenable. Following a Rothschild maxim that "tops and bottoms are for fools", Marber would also add "and for liars".He describes technical analysis as exactly like huntin', shootin', and fishin': what's being hunted are trends, never shooting for a top nor fishing for a bottom. But before any of that you need to learn about price. Using the same approach that he used when he taught at the International Management Institute, Geneva, he begins with price, then what price leads to: trends, support and resistance, patterns, indicators and ratios. When that has been absorbed, he moves on to stops.Marber also shares with the reader his vast wealth of experience of his time in the business - showing you the nitty-gritty, technical analysis in real-time, warts and all, and including reports on the FTSE, gold, oil and the dollar. This book is a must-read for anyone who really wants to understand the markets, delivered in Marber's distinctive and unique voice. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Why, years after the banking crisis, is the global economy still mired in recession and burdened by enormous debts? Why have the tried-and-tested economic policies of the past failed us this time? In Life After Growth, leading City analyst Tim Morgan sets out a ground-breaking analysis of how the economy really works. Economists are mistaken, he argues, when they limit their interpretation of the economy to matters of money. Ultimately, the economy is an energy system, not a monetary one. From this, it follows that we need to think in terms of two economies, not one - a 'real' economy of work, energy, resources, goods and services, and a parallel, 'financial' economy of money and debt. These two economies have parted company, allowing the financial economy to pile up promises that the real economy cannot meet. Starting with the discovery of agriculture, Tim Morgan traces the rise of the economy in terms of work, energy and resources. The driving factor, he explains, has been cheap and abundant energy. As energy has become increasingly costly to obtain, the potential for prosperity has diminished, to the point where growth in the real economy has ceased. An immediate problem is that our commitments - including debt, investments and welfare promises - cannot be honoured, which means that we can expect the financial system to be wracked by value destruction. At the same time, we need to adapt to a future in which prosperity can no longer be taken for granted. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Wouldn't life be better if you were free of the daily grind - the conventional job and boss - and instead succeeded or failed purely on the merits of your own investment choices? Free Capital is a window into this world. Based on a series of interviews, it outlines the investing strategies, wisdom and lifestyles of 12 highly successful private investors. Each of them has accumulated GBP1m or more - in most cases considerably more - mainly from stock market investment. Six are 'ISA millionaires' who have GBP1m or more in a tax-free ISA, a result which is arithmetically impossible without exceptional investment returns. Some have several academic degrees or strong City backgrounds; others left school with few qualifications and are entirely self-taught as investors. Some invest most of their money in very few shares and hold them for years at a time; others make dozens of trades every day, and hold them for at most a few hours. Some are inveterate networkers, who spend their day talking to managers at companies in which they invest; for others a share is just a symbol on a screen, and a price chart shows most of what they need to know to make their trading decisions.Free capital - money surplus to immediate living expenses - is the raw material with which these investors work. It can also be thought of as their psychological habitat, free from the petty tribulations of office politics. Lastly, free capital describes the footloose nature of their assets, which can be quickly redirected towards any type of investment anywhere in the world, without the constraints which institutional investors often face. Although it presents many advanced insights and valuable investment hints, this is not an overly technical book. It offers practical ideas and inspiration, with revealing detail and minimal jargon, making it an indispensable read for novice and experienced investors alike. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. First published in 1841, "Extraordinary Popular Delusions and the Madness of Crowds" is often cited as the best book ever written about market psychology. This Harriman House edition includes Charles Mackay's account of the three infamous financial manias - John Law's Mississipi Scheme, the South Sea Bubble, and Tulipomania. Between the three of them, these historic episodes confirm that greed and fear have always been the driving forces of financial markets, and, furthermore, that being sensible and clever is no defence against the mesmeric allure of a popular craze with the wind behind it. In writing the history of the great financial manias, Charles Mackay proved himself a master chronicler of social as well as financial history. Blessed with a cast of characters that covered all the vices, gifted a passage of events which was inevitably heading for disaster, and with the benefit of hindsight, he produced a record that is at once a riveting thriller and absorbing historical document. A century and a half later, it is as vibrant and lurid as the day it was written. For modern-day investors, still reeling from the dotcom crash, the moral of the popular manias scarcely needs spelling out. When the next stock market bubble comes along, as it surely will, you are advised to recall the plight of some of the unfortunates on these pages, and avoid getting dragged under the wheels of the careering bandwagon yourself. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. As the prospect of a hung parliament looms large, our political protagonists can learn much from the politics and personalities of the past. Mark Oaten's story of coalition government begins in the 1850s, with Disraeli fighting for his political life and Queen Victoria's battle to find a Prime Minister from the Whigs and Peelites driving her to despair. At the start of the following century, the First World War threw Lloyd George into the limelight but nearly killed the Liberal Party; Ramsay MacDonald's coalition in the 1930s saw him become leader without his party, who many felt he had betrayed, and Churchill's Great War coalition helped bring victory at war but not in peace. Decades later, two generations and parties came together with David Steel and Jim Callaghan forming the Lib-Lab pact, something Blair and Ashdown's 'project' never managed to emulate. North of the border, a deal did come off, resulting in Scotland being run by coalition government for 8 years. Throughout Europe, coalitions are the norm but recent political events in Italy and Germany have been far from normal. All these lessons from history are drawn together by Mark Oaten as he looks forward to the next election and reflects on whether hung parliaments and coalitions can ever work. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Modern communications have enabled fraudsters to operate on a massive scale that was previously unimaginable. Thousands of people, mainly the old and vulnerable but also those who are highly intelligent and successful, are relieved of billions of pounds each year. It is estimated that one in 20 UK bank customers were the victims of scams in 2014 alone. No-one knows the full scale of fraud because embarrassed victims often fail to report it. Despite all the publicity surrounding scams in the press, people keep falling for old tricks that often re-emerge in new guises. Scammers are ingenious, utterly ruthless and without conscience. Rodney Hobson, author of the best-selling beginners guide to stock market investing Shares Made Simple, has produced the first definitive guide to scams, categorising the different types, listing tell-tale signs and advising how to spot a fraudster and avoid becoming the next victim. This makes the basic principles behind each type of scam more recognisable and it shows how scams have evolved and re-emerged through time.Danger lurks for those unwary souls who part only too readily with their hard-earned cash and this book will help readers be alert to the risks. It is also meant to entertain, as we learn to grudgingly admire as well as despise the ingenious crooks who lurk in the shadows. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. We are constantly being told that we are on the cusp of a cashless society. The financial services industry would certainly like to see it that way. We are being enticed with contactless cards, mobile phone payment apps, and methods of bank transfer: all, apparently, for our convenience. But as Ross Clark argues in this compelling new book, it is not in our interests to surrender the right to use cash. Commercial interests want us to pay electronically in order to collect valuable data on our spending habits, while governments would love us to move to cashless payments in order to control the economy in ways which suit it, not us.If we choose to pay electronically, that is one thing, but we will regret it if we do not defend the right to pay with cash.
