Paperback. Condición: Very Good. When Achilles was born, the Fates the three female deities who shaped peoples lives announced that his destiny would be tied to that of Troy. Son of the nymph Thetis and Peleus, king of the Myrmidons, the fiercest warriors in all of Greece, Achilles was raised by the centaur Chiron, who taught the boy fighting skills and imbued him with a strong sense of honour. When asked to help avenge the Greeks against the Trojans, who had kidnapped the Greek princess Helen, Achilles answers the call, even though his mother warns him that battling the Trojans will bring him eternal glory but will cost him his life. Fighting alongside the troops of King Agamemnon, Achilless sense of honour and capacity for empathy are both tested. Achilles goes on to meet his fate against the Trojans but, in the end, who really decided his fate? Was it the gods, or was it Achilles himself? This epic tale is enlivened by bold and beautiful illustrations reminiscent of ancient Greek art. Ages nine to twelve. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Brave, unconventional, and determined, Ruth Asawa let nothing stop her from living a life intertwined with art Renowned for her innovative wire sculptures, Japanese American artist Ruth Asawa (1926-2013) was a teenager in Southern California when Japan bombed Pearl Harbor and the United States entered World War II. Japanese Americans on the West Coast forcibly removed from their homes. Asawa's family had to abandon their farm, her father was incarcerated, and she and the rest of her family were sent to a detention center in California, and later to a concentration camp in Arkansas. Asawa nurtured her dreams of becoming an artist while imprisoned and eventually made her way to the experimental Black Mountain College in North Carolina. This graphic biography by Sam Nakahira, developed in consultation with Asawa's younger daughter, Addie Lanier, chronicles the genesis of Asawa as an artist--from the horror of Pearl Harbor to her transformative education at Black Mountain College to building her life in San Francisco, where she would further develop and refine her groundbreaking sculpture.Asawa never sought fame, preferring to work on her own terms: for her, art and life were one. Using lively illustrations and a dozen photographs of Asawa's artwork, this graphic retelling of her young adult years demonstrates the transformative power of making art."A tender and thoughtful rendering of an important artist's life. Sam Nakahira uses the power and beauty of comics to its fullest to immerse you in the mind and genius of Ruth Asawa. As soon as I finished it, I wanted to read it again!"--Tillie Walden, Eisner Award-winning cartoonist and illustrator"A lovingly crafted story about the early, formative years of a great sculptor--covering both the hardships and the joys that helped shape Ruth Asawa into the artist we remember her as today." --Melanie Gillman, author of As the Crow Flies"Ruth Asawa: An Artist Takes Shape is a richly detailed recounting of the artist's life. It's so full of clearly conveyed scenes and stories that even those who are familiar with Asawa are sure to learn more. Obviously a labor of love, the book is true to the spirit of the woman who inspired it." --Andrea D'Aquino, author of A Life Made by Hand: The Story of Ruth Asawa "This graphic biography chronicles the genesis of Ruth Asawa as an artist--from the horror of Pearl Harbor to her transformative education at Black Mountain College to building her life in San Francisco, where she would further develop and refine her groundbreaking wire sculptures"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. Illustrator Kaz Rowe's graphic biography Liberated: The Radical Art and Life of Claude Cahun, reveals how the creative and courageous Surrealist artist championed freedom at every turn, from rejecting gender norms and finding queer love to risking death to sabotage the Nazis. Winner of the 2024 PROSE Award, Non-fiction graphic novels At the turn of the 20th century in Nantes, France, Lucy Schwob met Suzanne Malherbe, and lightning struck. The two became partners both artistically and romantically and transformed themselves into the creative personas Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore. Together, the couple embarked on a radical journey of Surrealist collaboration that would take them from conservative provincial France to the vibrancy of 1920s Paris to the oppression of Nazi-occupied Jersey during World War II, where they used art to undermine the Nazi regime. Cahun and Moore challenged gender roles and championed freedom at a time when strict societal norms meant that the truth of their relationship had to remain secret. Featuring 10 photographs by Cahun and Moore, this graphic biography by cartoonist Kaz Rowe brings Cahun's inspiring story to life. "Claude Cahun lived at the crossroads of masculine and feminine, of artist and activist, of blessed and cursed by the circumstances and time period they were born into. Rowe weaves together historical photos, direct quotes, and lyrical imagery to tell the tale of this brave queer icon to great effect." --Maia Kobabe, author of Gender Queer "The ubiquity of torrid love affairs in the lives of artists has often been used to entice readers, to give us a bit of gossip to pass on after we read. In Liberated: The Radical Art and Life of Claude Cahun, Kaz Rowe presents a different kind of love story--one in which love offers freedom and the passion it ignites isn't only romantic, but something more liberating. Here love is used as an anchor for radicalization and for art, and combined, for freedom. Liberated invites us to fall in love with--and alongside--Cahun. A wonderful read." --Isabel Quintero, author of Photographic: The Life of Graciela Iturbide and Gabi, a Girl in Pieces "This graphic biography chronicles the life of Surrealist artist Claude Cahun, from their childhood and experiences of antisemitism in France, through the development of their artistic practice in Paris, to their resistance against the Nazis in Jersey, and includes photographs by Cahun and artistic and romantic partner Marcel Moore"-- Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. El Pueblo de Los Angeles was founded in 1781 as a Spanish colony by settlers from present-day Mexico, as well as settlers of Indian, African and European descent. Its story represents a microcosm of the city's multiethnic history and heritage. Capital of Mexican California in the 1840s, the town grew with the influx of Anglo-Americans, Europeans and Chinese later in the 19th century. As Los Angeles blossomed into a modern metropolis, the old pueblo fell into disrepair. It was revitalized with the opening in 1930 of the Mexican marketplace at Olvera Street, which reflected popular romantic notions of old California. In 1953 the historic district was made a California state park; it is now a department of the city of Los Angeles. Illustrated in colour throughout, this volume combines text with historical paintings, archival photographs and newly-commissioned photography to create a portrait of the pueblo, its history, and its heritage. Initial chapters survey life in the Spanish, Mexican and early American periods. The work then discusses the transformation of Olvera Street and tells the story of the Siqueiros mural "America Tropical", a remarkable tale of art, ideology and politics in 1930s Los Angeles. The final chapters tour the pueblo's historic buildings and discuss initiatives for preserving its rich heritage, including the collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute, El Pueblo Historical Monument, and others to conserve "America Tropical". El Pueblo de Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by settlers from present-day Mexico, as well as settlers of Indian, African and European descent. Illustrated in colour, this volume uses text, paintings and photographs to create a portrait of the pueblo, its history, and its heritage. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A thought-provoking examination of beauty using three works of art by Manet, Gauguin, and Cezanne. As the discipline of art history has moved away from connoisseurship, the notion of beauty has become increasingly problematic. Both culturally and personally subjective, the term is difficult to define and nearly universally avoided. In this insightful book, Richard R. Brettell, one of the leading authorities on Impressionism and French art of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, dares to confront the concept of modern beauty head-on. This is not a study of aesthetic philosophy, but rather a richly contextualized look at the ambitions of specific artists and artworks at a particular time and place. Brettell shapes his manifesto around three masterworks from the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum: Edouard Manets Jeanne (Spring), Paul Gauguins Arii Matamoe (The Royal End), and Paul Cezannes Young Italian Woman at a Table. The provocative discussion reveals how each of these exceptional paintings, though depicting very different subjectsa fashionable actress, a preserved head, and a weary working womanenacts a revolutionary, yet enduring, icon of beauty. A thought-provoking discussion on the concept of beauty in works by Manet, Gauguin, and Cezanne. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. 'Beasts Factual and Fantastic' is the first in the Medieval Imagination series of small, affordable books that will draw on manuscript illuminations from the Middle Ages and early Renaissance. Often, as is in the case of the imaginary beasts that readers will encounter in this volume, artists depicted that which they did not see or know but which was nonetheless shaped by the prevailing beliefs, fears, and rudimentary science of the time. In other cases, manuscript illuminators recorded what they indeed did see - which, centuries later, reveals much about the world in which they lived. This volume features vivid and charming details from the wealth of manuscripts in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum and the British Library, along with a lively text; together both word and image provide an accessible and delightful introduction to the imagination of the medieval world. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. From the costly velvets and furs worn by kings to the undyed wools and rough linens of the peasantry, the clothing worn by the various classes in the Middle Ages played an integral role in medieval society. In addition to providing clues to status, profession, and/or geographic origin, textiles were a crucial element in the economies of many countries and cities. Much of what is known about medieval fashion is gleaned from the pages of manuscripts, which serve as a rich source of imagery. This volume provides a detailed look at both the actual fabrics and composition of medieval clothing as well as the periods attitude toward fashion through an exploration of illuminated manuscripts in the collection of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The last portion of the book is dedicated to the depiction of clothing in biblical times and the ancient world as seen through a medieval lens. Throughout, excerpts from literary sources of the period help shed light on the perceived role and function of fashion in daily life. "A sumptuously illustrated compact volume which uses full colour images and the accented gold of illuminated manuscripts to full advantage. . . . [This book] tantalises the reader through the well written text and accompanying illustrations."-European Review of History Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. A new look at the work of Mario Giacomelli, one of Italy's foremost photographers of the twentieth century. Mario Giacomelli (19252000) was born into poverty and lived his entire life in Senigallia, a seaside town along the Adriatic coast in Italy's Marche region. He purchased his first camera in 1953 and quickly gained recognition for the raw expressiveness of his images. His preference for grainy, high-contrast film and paper produced bold, geometric compositions with glowing whites and deep blacks. Giacomelli most frequently focused his camera on the people, landscapes, and seascapes of the Marche, and he often spent several years expanding and reinterpreting a single body of work or repurposing an image made for one series for inclusion in another. By applying titles derived from poetry and literature to his photographs, he transformed ordinary subjects into meditations on time, memory, and existence. Spanning the photographer's earliest pictures to those made in the final years of his life, this publication celebrates the J. Paul Getty Museums extensive Giacomelli holdings, formed in large part through a significant gift from Daniel Greenberg and Susan Steinhauser. This volume is published to accompany an exhibition on view at the J. Paul Getty Museum at the Getty Center from June 29 to October 10, 2021. Paperback. Condición: new. Paperback. No thinker in the West has had a wider and more sustained influence than the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. From philosophy to drama, religion to politics, it is difficult to find a current cultural or social phenomenon that is not in some aspect indebted to the famous philosopher and the Platonic tradition. It should come as no surprise that contemporary artists continue to engage with and respond to the ideas of Plato. Accompanying an exhibition at the Getty Villa, this book brings together eleven renowned artists working in a variety of mediaPaul Chan, Rachel Harrison, Huang Yong Ping, Mike Kelley, Jeff Koons, Joseph Kosuth, Paul McCarthy, Whitney McVeigh, Raymond Pettibon, Adrian Piper, and Michelangelo Pistolettoall of whom have acknowledged the role of Plato in their artistic process. Featuring candid interviews with the artists, this volume begins with an essay by the critic and curator Donatien Grau that contextualizes Plato in antiquity and in the present day. Contemporary art, Grau demonstrates, is Platonism stripped bare, and it allows us to reconsider Platos philosophy as a deeply human construct, one that remains highly relevant today.
