Cloth. Condición: Very Good Indeed. John F Flugel Ilustrador. First edition. Two scarce works from MP and founder of Bembridge School, John Howard Whitehouse. Two scarce works, both in their first editions, from social reformist and Liberal MP J. Howard Whitehouse. Both works are concerned with Bembridge School on the Isle of Wight, which Whitehouse founded in 1919.The first work present here is 'Three Bembridge Fables'. Each of the fables are related to the boys of the school, and only one had previously appeared, privately published. Collated and complete, with ten plates illustrated by John F. Flugel, a previous head boy at the school. The second work is entitled 'Thy Youth and Cause', and is the publication of a speech given by Whitehouse in the school chapel on the 18th March, 1934. He explains that Sundays at the chapel aimed at 'representing every phase of religious belief by concentrating upon constructive accounts of service in the spirit of the teachings of the New Testament, rather than by attention to dogmas that divide'. In the publisher's original quarter cloth, with paper covered boards. Externally smart, light bumping to spine tail of 'Youth and Cause', and spine head of 'Three Fables'. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Many pages uncut at top edge of both volumes. Very Good Indeed. book.

First British edition, first impression, of the authors' analysis of the breakdown of the American banking system in 1933. Nadler and Bogen were then Professors of Finance at New York University: their work offers an eyewitness account of the crisis, written "in an easy, simple style, avoiding most of the technical jargon of economists" (Current History, p. vi). Over the winter of 1932-33, many Americans, losing confidence in the solvency of their banks, attempted to withdraw their deposits en masse. The resulting wave of panic caused many established banks to fail, and was arrested only by the emergency bank holiday declared by Franklin D. Roosevelt on 6 March 1933. Nadler and Bogen's work explores the short-term causes of the 1933 panic, while the final chapter outlines their proposal for legislative reforms to combat similar crises in the future. The work was first published in the US by Dodd, Mead & Co. in 1933. Per the title page verso, this edition "is brought up to date and published in Great Britain with new material". "Review of The Banking Crisis: The End of an Epoch", Current History, vol. 38, no. 4, Jul. 1933. Octavo. Original yellow cloth, spine lettered in blue. With dust jacket. Tables in the text. Light bumping and finger soiling, minor foxing to edges and outer leaves; moderate toning to jacket spine, light creasing and finger soiling to panels, unclipped, 64 mm split at head of front panel: a very good copy in like jacket.
