The very notion of art was invented by the West and refers to the learned version of its material culture. It was then projected onto other civilisations, particularly Asian ones, and finally onto the preliterate…societies of Africa and Oceania. Whether or not these cultures possess the concept of art is of little importance, because when they honour their gods, they inevitably address what they consider to be the acme of beauty. For a long time, this openness to other aesthetics was based on the arts of the past, until it was finally accepted that there were living creators in these distant lands, and that today's means of communication have brought them closer to us. These others who appeared in the 1980s are by no means a homogenous group. Without stretching this analysis too far, they can be regarded as falling into two categories: those who have opted for modernity and submit to the demands of the market and Western based institutions, and those who concentrate on giving visual expression to their communities and beliefs, ignoring the demands of the art market. Australian Aboriginal art represents an intermediate situation, since alongside art of a sacred nature, there are works deliberately produced for sale, initially encouraged by missionaries. Nothing too beautiful for the gods aims to show the variety of works connected with the spiritual impulse, from those used in religious rites to contemporary artworks that refer to them. These hybrid works are often the result of accommodations with modernity. The exhibition and accompanying book bring together altars from Africa, the Caribbean and Asia, works by artists invested with religious responsibilities (Didi, Shiraga), works by religious artists (Ramoun) and others by artists who refer explicitly to religions and spirituality (Sooja Kim, El Anatsui, Vasquez de la Horra, Bedia, Boltanski, Viola). AUTHORS: Prince Domenico Antonio Pallavicino (Stresa 1944) is the scion of one of the oldest and most prominent families in Genoa. Strother is Associate Professor of African Art at Columbia University in New York. She studied History of Art at Yale University, where she earned a Ph.D. in 1992. Her research is based on thirty-two months of work in eastern Pende and central Pende. Paris a photographic book with the city as its theme takes an abstract approach to depicting the city, while retaini…ng a direct relationship with reality. It is part of the tradition of modernist photography, but it distinguishes itself by the perfect appearance of digitally retouched images. Shadows play a key role in simplifying reality, dissociating locations from their classical visual representation. The economy of form thus created enables the depiction of Paris to be radically transformed, going beyond the customary descriptive task of photography. At first glance, the viewer perceives the overall contrast of the image, with only the light lines standing out against the shadows. As the eye gradually adapts, the details in the shadows become apparent, introducing a second way of reading the photograph and enriching the way it is perceived. Paris is thus viewed anew, moving from shadow to abstraction. Text in English and French. AUTHORS: Bruno Sassarone, born in 1975, lives and works in Paris. He holds a master's degree in law, but interrupted his legal career after winning Photo magazine's 2005 Canon Prize and the Front Cover Prize of the January/February 2006 issue. Since 2008, his work has been exhibited in galleries in Paris and Brussels. As a competition winner, his work was included in exhibitions in Paris, at the Maison Europeenne de la Photographie in 2008 (SFR Jeunes Talents), and in Saint-Tropez in 2019 (Fondation Mecenat Chirurgie Cardiaque). Studio Harcourt Paris held an exhibition featuring more than sixty of his photographs, in 2022. Aurore Clement is a French film and theatre actress. She was discovered by Louis Malle and has posed throughout her career for some of the world's leading photographers, such as Peter Lindbergh, Richard Avedon and David Bailey. A book of her photographs taken by Peter Wyss, Une femme sans fin s'enfuit, written by Mathieu Terence, was published by The (M) Editions in 2002. Aurore met Bruno Sassarone at one of his Paris exhibitions and kindly agreed to preface his book on Paris, as a token of her friendship and interest in his work. SELLING POINTS: . After serving as a member of the Conseil national des universites in Paris, Alain-Michel Boyer then became emeritus professor of African Art. He lived for several years in Ivory Coast, particularly among the Baule and Yaure peoples. He also carried out several research missions in various regions of Africa. He carried out definitive research, particularly in the field of the arts of Ivory Coast. He authored around twenty books, including Comment regarder les arts d'Afrique (Hazan, 2017), Baule (5 Continents Editions, 2008) and Le corps africain (Hazan, 2006). He published the only books on the masks and figurines of two peoples hitherto neglected by art historians: Les Yohoure de Cote d'Ivoire.
