Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. With an average age of just twenty-two, the young airmen of the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command, all volunteers, began operating within minutes of the start of the Second World War. Continually, through to May 1945, the aircrews, with the odds heavily against them, fought in defiance of Nazi aggression. They defended the British Isles against invasion, they took the war directly back to Germany, they supported the Allied land campaigns, they opposed the enemy Navy and U-boat threats, and they countered the German V-weapon offensives. But the cost was high. From this multi-national force, made up of British airmen, Canadians, Australians, New Zealanders, South Africans, Rhodesians, Indians, Poles, Czechs, French, Americans and Jamaicans, a staggering 55,573 airmen would lose their lives, 9,838 would become prisoners of war and a further 8,403 would suffer wounds. Fighting High Publishing brings together notable military aviation authors to tell the stories of some of those who 'failed to return' from operations. The carefully selected stories demonstrate the diversity of operational duties undertaken by the aircrews, whilst highlighting the extremes of danger they faced, often day after day and night after night. Most would not survive their ordeal, and many others would see out the war incarcerated in an enemy POW camp. The authors, drawing upon surviving veteran accounts, family archives, official documents, wartime memoirs and letters, flying logbooks, and relative and witness recollections, piece together the extraordinary, gripping, yet ultimately tragic events surrounding the losses described. Illustrated throughout with colour and black and white photographs and documents, 'Bomber Command Failed to Return' ensures that the memory of all the young men, some would even say boys, who sacrificed all, is kept alive. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. Jacket by Michael Lindley Ilustrador. 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR ON TITLE PAGE 'With best wishes from Richard Pinkham' In almost 'as new' condition, some very slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, not price clipped (£17.99), no other inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg++ copy. 162pp, illustrated. Royal Air Force veteran Wing Commander Richard Pinkham DFC (1916-2010), presents the extraordinary and graphic account of his experiences flying 62 World War Two bombing operations. He tells his story with candour and without pulling punches, although the occasional humorous anecdote lightens proceedings. The reader joins Richard in the cockpit of his bomber as he dares the bursting flak, dives to avoid penetrating searchlights, and wrestles his damaged aircraft home. Richard served with the Royal Air Force through the entire war, embarking on his operational career amidst the desperate fight for survival that was the Battle of Britain. He went on to take part in some of the largest bombing raids ever carried out against Germany. With odds of 5 to 1 against him, Richard, unlike so many of his fellow airmen, lived to tell his story. He was then posted to North Africa to blast the Axis forces from Tunisia, and finally spent the last year of the war in the Far East, taking up fascinating accident investigation duties. 'On Wings of Fortune' is an exceptional story by a distinguished and decorated RAF veteran who flew and fought in the World War Two aerial front line. Acclaimed author Steve Darlow provides the general context of the bomber war. Richard Pinkham relives his terrifying, gripping and fascinating story. Scarce signed. Signed by Author(s).

Hardcover. Condición: new. Hardcover. The Canadian contribution to the Second World War Allied bombing campaign, from the first days of the war to the last, proved instrumental in securing the defeat of Nazi Germany. Author and historian Ken Cothliff has pieced together the extraordinary stories of four Canadian volunteers who chose to fly 'Under the Maple Leaf'. There was no mandatory conscription in Canada. They chose to serve their country and the British Commonwealth in its time of greatest need. Reg Lane joined Bomber Command relatively early and was in action by the autumn of 1941, rising from NCO pilot to become a 'Master Bomber' with the elite Pathfinder Force. Jim Moffat, the 'Evader', ended his flying combat career after twelve operations, becoming a fighter on the European mainland with the Resistance. Steve Puskas' comprehensive diaries and unpublished writings provide an extraordinary insight into his training as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan, an experience familiar to many Commonwealth and British air crew. Bill Gracie, a Scot who had immigrated to Canada as a boy, was keen to take up the fight when the war began, with the sole aim of becoming aircrew. Sadly, he was one of the 55,573 Bomber Command aircrew, of which over 10,000 were Canadian, who never returned home. These young men volunteered three times; once to join up, the second time to go overseas, and the third to become aircrew. All came from different backgrounds and found life in the air force very different. With the exception of one man, all came home with their lives radically changed for ever. The debt owed to the people of Canada can never be forgotten. Ken Cothliff's 'Under the Maple Leaf' is the story of a few of Bomber Command's many young Canadian aircrew, all of whom made their contribution to the eventual victory over tyranny. 80 illustrations The Canadian contribution to the Second World War bombing campaign, from the first days to the last, proved instrumental in securing the defeat of Nazism. Hardcover. Condición: Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Fine. 1st Edition. A fabulous, bright copy with no owner inscriptions and clean pages throughout. The book is in wonderful condition and looks hardly read. The black cloth boards are fresh with crisp gilt title lettering on the spine. The dust jacket is bright and clean, albeit price clipped with some light surface scuffing. On the front free end paper there's a plate, probably from a signing event, which is signed by the Canadian airman, Fred Sutherland. The plate states in print: "Signed by Flt. Sgt. Fred Sutherland, Front gunner of AJ-N piloted by Les Knight who successfully attacked the Eder Dam causing the final breach." The plate has an illustration of a Lancaster Bomber above the signature and the RAF coat of arms at the foot. This is a wonderful and unique copy. A little research tells us the following information about Sutherland and his pilot. Fred Sutherland was one of the last survivors of the famous "Dam Busters" raids during WWII who died in 2019. On a later low flying mission in Sept. 1943 his plane was damaged so badly, the bomb jettisoned, that Fred and most of the rest of the crew were forced to bail out over occupied Dutch territory. His pilot, Les Knight, the same pilot as in the Dam Busters mission, was forced to crash land and, unfortunately, died in the process. Fred Sutherland had to escape across occupied Holland and France, into Spain before coming back to the UK 2 months later. He went on to live to a ripe old age back in Canada. Quite a story. Signed by Subject of Biography.
