Limited edition of 500 copies numbered and signed by the editor, James Moran. Rexine-backed boards, gilt cover device, 8vo, 23 cm, 55 pp, ills, facs, 1 portrait. From the introduction: "Among the many German books on the art of printing there are a number of versions of the Depositio Carnuti Typographici, a morality play performed when an apprentice became a journeyman. The peculiar use of a form of baptism when the apprentice was cleansed from his original state of brute ignorance and admitted by the 'priest' into the privileges and responsibilities attaching to the members of the Printers' Guild may indicate a connection with the miracle plays, or more likely with medieval versions of the saturnalia - the 'Feast of Asses' and the 'Boy Bishop' - in which religious ceremonies were ridiculed. The printing apprentice is 'chopped' and 'planed', is prodded with compasses, has an imitation tooth drawn, has his face daubed and is eventually baptised with a new name by a 'priest'. The Depositio was first brought to the notice of the English-speaking world by William Blades in 1885. Blades, a scholarly printer, is best known for his pioneering bibliographical study of Caxton (1861-3), but he was also responsible for many other works on aspects of printing, among them his translation of the Depositio here reproduced." First published in 1885, Blades' translation was made from the version of Johann Rist, first published in 1655, not (as claimed by Blades) from the version of Paul de Vise, published in 1621. An unnumbered and unsigned copy. Fine in Fine slipcase.
