Paperback. Condición: Very Good. It was not long before midnight on 17 May 1943 when the inhabitants of Gunne, the German village close to the Mohne Dam, heard the air-raid warnings. It was widely regarded as a precautionary measure, but ninety minutes later, an immense tidal wave was roaring down the valley towards them. Guy Gibson, who led X Squadron of 19 specially adapted Lancasters equipped with Barnes Walliss bouncing bomb, knew that the odds were stacked against him and his men. But they would not let him down. Some, like Squadron Leader Young whose bomb breached the dam, would return home as heroes. Others, like Pilot Officer Byers and his crew, would not, shot down just after crossing the North Sea while they were still miles away from their targets. A small number of those involved would survive crashed aircraft and live out the war in POW camps. The Dam Busters raids have gone down as perhaps the most famous air strikes in history. Yet behind the story of courage and determination there lies another, darker side, both for the aircrews - 40% of whom died in the mission - and for those who lived below the dams in the path of the flood, many of whom were not even German. This compelling account tells the story of those dramatic events through the eyes of those who were there. Whether or not the reality matches the legend, one thing that emerges is the incredible bravery of those who flew the most dangerous mission they had ever undertaken and the trauma experienced by those unlucky enough to be its target. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The historian R. H. Tawney famously wrote, The sixteenth century lives in terror of the tramp. The eighteenth century lived in terror of the tramps of the seas pirates. Pirates have fascinated people ever since. It was a harsh life for those who went on the account, constantly overshadowed by the threat of death through violence, illness, shipwreck, or the hangmans noose. The lure of gold, the excitement of the chase and the freedom that life aboard a pirate ship offered were judged by some to be worth the risk. Helen Hollick explores both the fiction and fact of the Golden Age of piracy, and there are some surprises in store for those who think they know their Barbary Corsair from their boucanier.Everyone has heard of Captain Morgan, but who recognises the name of the aristocratic Frenchman Daniel Montbars? He killed so many Spaniards he was known as The Exterminator. The fictional world of pirates, represented in novels and movies, is different from reality. What draws readers and viewers to these notorious hyenas of the high seas? What are the facts behind the fantasy? Helen Hollick reveals all, weaving into the history her own fictional creations. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Essex is a county of contrasts. The west of the county is now seen as part of London with the London Boroughs of Barking and Dagenham, Redbridge and Havering actually positioned in Essex but almost indistinguishable from the rest of East London. Moving to the east, however, things are very different. Once past the end of the London Underground District Line at Upminster, the county becomes much more rural, green and pleasant. In many of these towns a small area of the old village survives, usually based round an old church. Many of the small villages have survived independently and stand alone surrounded by open countryside. It is not too difficult to find the odd thatched cottage or weather boarded house among the old buildings. Join Michael Foley on this nostalgic visual journey through the county, which will surprise and delight anyone who knows and loves this area. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. A full, lavishly illustrated study of a nobleman whose exploits became the stuff of medieval romance, once recounted in the same breath as Robin Hood. Ranulf de Blondeville was fabulously rich and powerful. He served six kings, endured difficult regime-change, fought his way across half of France and back and more than once turned wrested victory from defeat. He never forgot that his roots were Norman although his efforts were for England, where he made his home. Loyal to a fault, as a youth he was disastrously married to the Duchess of Brittany, firebrand of contemporary politics, who tried to destroy him. His second wife brought happiness but not children. He was a fiercely independent spirit with a renowned temper. Unafraid of anyone, he besieged castles aggressively, constructed and defended them stoutly and built an Earldom of unparalleled power at England's heart. Kings lavished titles on him and the Pope sought out his support, noting his exceptional leadership. On his death-bed he bequeathed to Henry III the only piece of Normandy ever recovered from the French. It was rumoured that when he died the devil himself kicked him out of hell, he was so much trouble. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This is a book to set you thinking about how we live our lives. Starting in the fourteenth century, it tells the story of a 'middling' family over the course of 600 years, set in its work-a-day local contexts - social, economic, and political. Its story is used to unravel our 'Thread of Identity'. As well as the story of the Ram family, there are several other themes or strands. How community belonging is formed in individuals and local groups, and how the past can inform current concerns about weakness in community life are explored in depth. We do not realise today the key part small local communities and groups have played in shaping our current society. Another theme finds new ways of interlinking the disciplines of history, sociology, psychology and genetics. The Thread of Identity will appeal to those who enjoy reading about history or current affairs, to historians or sociologists who have a professional interest in its themes, and to administrators, policy makers and politicians who will be challenged by the ideas developed about community building. It will also provide encouragement to people researching and telling their own family stories. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. All of the stories in this book are true accounts, collected in tape-recorded interviews and transferred to the page. The stories, told by the fans themselves, are of real events which have touched and, in some cases, significantly changed people's lives. But there must be more tales about Liverpool Football Club than there are waves on the Mersey - so, the aim has been to collect a varied selection of memories, and in so doing attempt to convey some of the passion and fervour that the fans have for their team. Liverpool Football Club is one of the oldest in the Football League, with a proud history dating back more than one hundred years. During that time the club, spurred on by its many fans and supporters, has reached the dizziest heights and gained just about every national and international accolade in football. Also, it cannot be denied there have been many times of great depression and anxiety in this long and illustrious story. The reminiscences selected and recorded here reflect the variety of these events. Since the very earliest days, the face of Anfield has been continually changing and the club itself is now very different from what it was at its start in 1892. Amidst all of these changes, however, one aspect remains constant, and that is the spirit of the club and its supporters! All fans will enjoy sharing the memories recorded here, and in so doing will doubtless recall many more of their own. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. For the first time in decades, a fresh look at the fabled Tudor dynasty, comprising some of the most enigmatic figures ever to rule England. Acclaimed historian G. J. Meyer reveals the flesh-and-bone reality in all its wild excess. In 1485, young Henry Tudor, whose claim to the throne was so weak as to be almost laughable, crossed the English Channel from France at the head of a ragtag little army and took the crown from the family that had ruled England for almost four hundred years. Half a century later his son, Henry VIII, desperate to rid himself of his first wife in order to marry a second, launched a reign of terror aimed at taking powers no previous monarch had even dreamed of possessing. In the process he plunged his kingdom into generations of division and disorder, creating a legacy of blood and betrayal that would blight the lives of his children and the destiny of his country. THE TUDORS weaves together all the sinners and saints, the tragedies and triumphs, the high dreams and dark crimes, that reveal the Tudor era to be, in its enthralling, notorious truth, as momentous and as fascinating as the fictions audiences have come to love. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The current Prince of Wales, our future King, has married his mistress and she will become, barring an accident, our next Queen Consort. This is a unique situation and one that is unlikely to be repeated. Of course, only seventy years ago, his great uncle was in a not dissimilar predicament which cost him his throne. Royal Sex shows how a certain number of key aristocratic families appear to have cornered the market in providing our monarchs with mistresses over successive centuries. The present Duchess of Cornwall is a prime example, her greatgrandmother, Alice Keppel was a mistress of Edward VII. The reason? To capture and exploit royal power and patronage by placing a mistress or favourite at the centre of power. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Have you ever heard of a four-footed bird? Can you really teach a dog to read? Where would you find a kangaroo crossed with a lion? In this brilliant and bizarre follow-up to Great Victorian Inventions, Caroline Rochford reveals the wondrous experiments and extraordinary theories of the great minds of science, engineering and natural history of the Victorian age. Some discoveries were authentic, some merely misguided assumptions giving rise to strange beliefs. This book exposes the curious conviction that Martians were constructing waterways on Mars and that the sun was really blue. It enters the world of botany with the discovery of a plant that had the ability to uproot itself and travel across the landscape, along with an ornamental tree that ate iron nails. Within these pages you can relive the moment when a German medical student accidentally splashed a liquid chemical on to his face and found it turned his eye numb, thus discovering local anaesthetic, and learn how green Victorians tackled the threat to fossil fuels by converting straw into energy. Come on a remarkable journey into the past and see for yourself the extraordinary discoveries that promised to change the world forever. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The ubiquitous cup of tea is as much a part of British life as indifferent weather, the BBC or the queue at the post office. Look at the facts: we Britons drink 62 billion cups per year; 70 per cent of the population (over age ten) drank tea yesterday; over 25 per cent of milk consumed in the UK goes into your cup of tea. Tea, since its arrival here in the seventeenth century, has shaped our lives, our history, our work, our culture and even our bodies. Not surprisingly for a drink that we take throughout the day, every day, there is a fascinating story to tell about its origins and how it took Britain by storm to become our second most-popular beverage after tap water. This book begins with the early history of tea and goes on to chart its development as something quintessentially British with it slowly but surely insinuating itself into our culture, language and society. Our loss of the American colonies, the Opium Wars, female emancipation and victory in the Second World War all owe something to a nice cup of tea. Tea is synonymous with Britain. The story of our intimate relationship with tea is in effect the social history of Britain, reflecting aspects of the nation's trade, manners, fashion, art, drinking habits, industrial legislation, foreign policy, and its health. Like Samuel Johnson, we just can't get enough of it: 'You cannot make tea so fast as I can gulp it down.' So, put the kettle on, and read the amazing tale of tea . Paperback. Condición: Very Good. On one of his extensive trips in England, he saw no less than 2218 locomotives in three days - a feat present day enthusiasts are unable to perform. As Alan developed, so did the scope of his railway interest and he was broad minded enough to seek venerable locomotives on the SR and LNER. Finally, and almost at the eleventh hour, he discovered the world of industrial locomotives. Alan had the good sense to record what he saw - first as written notes and then supplemented with photographs. Alan aimed to see a locomotive of every class in the United Kingdom. This entailed making long day trips such as Bath to Blackpool and return, a round trip of 412 miles. Alan became part of the photographic triumvirate of himself, Ivo Peters and Norman Lockett, and he was friendly with two other notable railway clerics: the Rev. W Awdrey and the Rev Teddy Boston. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Organised transport services commenced in Bradford in 1882 and since then the streets have witnessed the passage of horse trams, steam trams, electric trams, trolleybuses and motor buses. Author David J. Croft has assembled an unrivalled collection of photographs dating from the earliest years of public transport to the present day, and this selection of around 200 takes the reader on a comprehensive tour of transportation past and present. For many years the services were under municipal control, but numerous other operators have come and gone. The city pioneered trolleybus operation in 1911 and has the distinction of being the last place in Britain to operate this environmentally friendly form of transport. Besides traditional Bradford vehicles, less well-known vehicles are depicted, plus those preserved in museum collections. Bradford Transport promises to prompt fond memories among the city's older residents, and to acquaint the younger generation with its tremendous heritage. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Two weeks before Dunkirk, Anthony Eden, Minister of War, announced to the nation on BBC radio his concept of a Local Defence Volunteer force. It was a grim time! The Germans were routing the French and British in Belgium and France, Norway was lost, and within two weeks, the cream of Britain's fighting forces would be weaponless and kit-less, seeking rescue from the beaches of Dunkirk. Eden's words echoed around every living room in the country: 'In order to volunteer, what you have to do is give in your name at your local police station; and then, as and when we want you, we will let you know.' The motley assortment of men, most either too old or too young to join the army, became the nucleus of the Home Guard. Untried and without weapons, they would be called upon to halt the invasion that Hitler planned as he stood on the cliffs near Calais, eyeing Britain and its populace as his next conquest. Over a period of a few months, this rag-tag group was armed, uniformed and trained, using the Home Guard Manual. Learning how to construct booby traps, destroy tanks, ambush the enemy, survive in the open, use basic camouflage, read maps and send signals, the fledgling volunteer was turned into a veritable fighting machine, leaving the army to retrain, re-equip and fight elsewhere. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. There have been many tales and anecdotes about the Cotswolds published over the past two hundred years, some of which are now virtually inaccessible. This book provides a fine selection of these tales - some amusing, others poignant - covering this corner of the country, revealing something of the unique nature of the region. The text covers a wide variety of subjects and, with much of it written in dialect, vividly captures the texture of life as it was at the end of the nineteenth century. Here are tales of the farmer and the country fir, the shepherd and his idyllic life and the rural wedding, but also of the death of a child and the effects of politics on ordinary people. Here, too, are anecdotes of daily life and characters still strangely familiar despite the passing of the years. In this volume is contained S S. Buckman's John Darke's Sojourn in the Cotteswolds and Elsewhere; Willum Workman's Wit and Wisdom by G. Edmund Hall and John Drinkwater's Cotswold Characters. Illustrated with original line drawings and contemporary photographs of the area, Cotswold Tales will delight visitors and residents alike. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The Great Western Railway route from Paddington to Fishguard was the company's attempt to compete with the London & North Western Railway's Irish route between Euston and Holyhead and to compete for mail traffic to Dublin. While the GWR failed to take the mail contract for Dublin, the company did win mail contracts for the south of Ireland and were involved in developments of the railways there, not least the Great Southern & Western Railway, which ran anywhere between Rosslare, Waterford, Cork, and Dublin. While the port at Fishguard was not as successful as that at Holyhead, it did attract Cunard ocean liners, like the Mauretania and ill-fated Lusitania, as they returned from New York before the outbreak of the First World War. Special trains were run in connection with the capital making quick time, beating timings from the liners' home port at Liverpool. GWR Irish services brought welcome revenue to the Paddington company, and as the company see its 175th year, it is important to tell the story of this much neglected route. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. Walsall is a town with a long and rich history. By the late fourteenth century the town was a borough with its own mayor and town council. Walsall became famed for the skills of its metal and leather-workers, and expanded to become a major industrial centre. Today it is best known as Europe's leading centre for saddlery manufacture, for its football team (affectionately known as the Saddlers), and for its splendid Arboretum, one of the finest urban parks in the Midlands. In Walsall Through Time, local historian Michael Glasson looks at how this long history is reflected in the buildings and streets of the town. 'Then and now' images illustrate the massive changes that have taken place in the fabric of the town centre, prompting us to mourn the loss of so many streets and buildings, and at the same time consider the benefits of modern-day urban regeneration. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 'What is our purpose in this Bill? Briefly this, to bring elementary education within the reach of every English home, aye, and within the reach of those children who have no homes.' So said W. E. Forster when introducing the Elementary Education Bill in the House of Commons in 1870. The Victorian and Edwardian Schoolchild describes the effect of this Bill on the lives of the vast majority of English and Welsh children, the offspring of the working and lower middle classes, who attended elementary school during that period. Improvements in the welfare and health of the pupils, in the form of open-air schools and the provision of school meals, the dilemma of the 'half-timers' and the out-of-school activities in which the children engaged, such as the Boys' Brigade and Sunday School, are all examined; as is the training of the teachers, who often worked under extreme pressures, and their relations with the pupils in their charge. Pamela Horn, the author of a number of books on life in Victorian Britain, has gathered together over 130 photographs to complement the text. Of great interest to students and social and educational historians, this book will also prove engrossing to the general reader. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The name Wetherby derives from the Saxon word for a sheep farm, or the Norse for a bend in the river. Archaeological finds show the Wetherby area has been populated since the early Bronze Age, growing around an important river crossing on the 'Great North Road' between London and Edinburgh, for which the existing stone bridge was built in 1233. Mary Queen of Scots crossed it on her way south from Bolton Castle, as did many armies through the centuries. Two skirmishes were fought for possession of the town during the Civil War and Oliver Cromwell passed through the area on the morning of the Battle of Marston Moor. Almost all of Wetherby was the property of the Dukes of Devonshire from 1602 until 1824, and a number of buildings constructed on behalf of the Devonshire Estate still survive. Through a fascinating collection of images, the Wetherby Historical Trust details this town's rich history. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. This book illustrates some of the changes in the villages of Newby and Scalby situated on the northern outskirts of Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast. It includes many of the older streets and some of the buildings as well as scenes of village life from a bygone age before the advent of motorised transport. These contrast sharply, in many cases, with the recent photographs that have been taken to highlight the way the character of villages has altered. The villages were served by a station at Scalby, on the Scarborough & Whitby Railway, that was opened in 1885. This stimulated the growth of Scalby, when building materials were brought in to construct new houses. This was an important stage of development in a process which still continues today. Despite this progress Scalby still retains its historic heart and this book also illustrates some of the features that have survived. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Paperback. Condición: Very Good. 'One of the saddest and yet most thrilling sights to me was to see parties of those young fellows who had just volunteered being marched from the recruiting office - perhaps 30, 50 or 100 of them - in all sorts of dress - top hats, caps, soft hats, morning coats, jackets - shabby men and 'nuts', labourers, clerks, partners in great city businesses, hooligans - all mixed up, marching side by side, all having made the great decision, ready to lay down their lives for their country .It made one's heart ache.' On Tuesday 29 July 1914 Lillie Scales heard that war was imminent. Four years of turmoil ensued, and from her home in North London, Lillie recorded it all in the pages of her diary. By 7 August she had turned up for first-aid classes along with a thousand other women. Men had rushed to enlist. By October Lillie and her husband George had offered to take in Belgian refugees, and later in the war they gave a home to many ANZACs while they were on leave. As a result, Lillie's diary also holds accounts of daring escape and of Front Line action. Through her diary we hear of Zeppelin raids, rationing, the sinking of the Lusitania, the shelling of Scarborough, and the loss of dear friends. Lillie's detailed diaries provide insight and lend immediacy to this fascinating subject. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Paperback. Condición: Very Good. The LBSCR was the main route connecting London with Brighton and the pleasures of the South Coast resorts. In this latest volume Bradshaw takes us on the journey and, via the numerous branch lines, also explores the coastal lines, westwards to Chichester and eastwards, on the Brighton and Lewes branch to Eastbourne, St Leonards and Hastings. The network of branch lines within Surrey and Sussex reaches a number of destinations including Croydon, Redhill, Reigate, Dorking, Guildford, Epsom, East Grinstead, Horsham, Uckfield and Battle, and in the north of Surrey the LSWR loop takes in Richmond and Kew. Seldom has the gigantic intellect of man been employed upon a work of greater utility. Punch, in praise of Bradshaws publications. Bradshaws guide was published in 1863, not that long after most of the railway network had been completed. It gives the reader a unique insight into the world of the Victorian railways and goes beyond the engineering aspects to record the sights to be seen in the towns and cities encountered along the way. Local author and railway expert Simon Jeffs accompanies Bradshaws original text with contemporary images and many new colour photographs of the same journeys today. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.
