In their wake, the quest for international order has prompted a reshuffling of global aims and priorities. In a fresh approach, Gilles Kepel focuses on the Middle East as a nexus of international disorder and decodes the complex language of war, propaganda, and terrorism that holds the region in its thrall. The breakdown of the Israeli Palestinian peace process in 2000 was the first turn in a downward spiral of violence and retribution. Meanwhile, a neoconservative revolution in Washington unsettled U.S. Mideast policy, which traditionally rested on the twin pillars of Israeli security and access to Gulf oil. In Saudi Arabia and Afghanistan, a transformation of the radical Islamist doctrine of Bin Laden and Zawahiri relocated the arena of terrorist action from Muslim lands to the West: Islamist radicals proclaimed jihad against their enemies worldwide. Kepel examines the impact of global terrorism and the ensuing military operations to stem its tide. He questions the United States' ability to address the Middle East challenge with Cold War rhetoric, while revealing the fault lines in terrorist ideology and tactics. Finally, he proposes a way out of the Middle East quagmire that triangulates the interests of Islamists, the West, and the Arab and Muslim ruling elites. That path leads through Muslim immigrant communities in the West~the ultimate battlefield where the struggle for the democratization of Islamic societies will be won or lost.

The book, now revised and updated, is divided into three parts. The first covers the formative era of Islamic civilization. The second traces the diffusion of worldwide Islamic societies, while the third explores their reaction to European imperialism, and emergence as independent states. The concluding chapters consider Islam's recent history, the formation of Islamic revival movements and global Islamic identities. The book is essential reading for students and for those seeking to understand the Muslim peoples. Reviews of first edition: "I do not think that any other world civilization can boast a comparable general account of such substance and quality . this is a great deal more than a textbook. It is a product oflearning, intellect and style of an extremely high order." ~ Journal oj the Royal Asiatic Society. "The value of A History of Islamic Societies lies in its sheer comprehensiveness. In one volume a vast amount of material is synthesized and presented in a clear and effective style. There is nothing else like it." ~ The Journal of Asian Studies. "Lapidus is concerned not with defining an essential Islam, but rather with mapping the role of Islamic beliefs, institutions, and identities in particular historical contexts." ~ International Journal oj Middle East Studies The first edition of A History of Islamic Societies was published in 1988 as a supplement to The Cambridge History of Islam (1970). Since publication, the book has become a classic work of history. The second edition brings this definitive and bestselling book to a new generation of readers.

Using extensive new research, John Gooch explores the nature and development of the three armed forces; their relationships with Mussolini and the impact of his policies and command; the development of operational and strategic thought; and the deployment and use of force in Libya, Abyssinia and Spain. He emphasises Mussolini's long~term expansionist goals and explains how he responded to the structural pressures of the international system and the contingent pressures of events. This compelling account shows that while Mussolini bore ultimate responsibility for Italy's fateful entry into the Second World War, his generals and admirals bore a share of the blame for defeat through policies that all too often rested on irrationality and incompetence.

That Jefferson himself was caught between his own soaring rhetoric and private behavior toward blacks has long been known. But the tortured duality of his attitude toward Indians is only now being unearthed. In this landmark history, Anthony Wallace takes us on a tour of discovery to unexplored regions of Jefferson 's mind. There, the bookish Enlightenment scholar~collector of Indian vocabularies, excavator of ancient burial mounds, chronicler of the eloquence of America's native peoples, and mourner of their tragic fate~sits uncomfortably close to Jefferson the imperialist and architect of Indian removal, Impelled by the necessity of expanding his agrarian republic, he became adept at putting a philosophical gloss on his policy of encroachment, threats of war, and forced land cessions ~ a policy that led, eventually, to cultural genocide. In this compelling narrative, we see how Jefferson's close relationships with frontier fighters and Indian agents, land speculators and intrepid explorers, European travelers, missionary scholars, and the chiefs of many Indian nations all complicated his views of the rights and claims of the first Americans. Lavishly illustrated with scenes and portraits from the period, Jefferson and the Indians adds a troubled dimension to one of the most enigmatic figures of American history, and to one of its most shameful legacies.

K. Fairbank, "is the ticking time bomb in U.S.China policy." Now, before time runs out, Ralph N. Clough offers this masterly analysis of the Taiwan dilemma set against the background of the island's history, politics, and economic development. Clough begins by tracing the changing attitude of the United States toward Taiwan ~from disinterest after World War II to deep concern that began with the Korean War and continued until the peace in Vietnam. He then undertakes a thorough description of the island and its people. He discusses Taiwan's political strµcture, the strengths and weaknesses of its society, and the evolving relationship between native Taiwanese and the mainlanders who arrived after 1945. Clough fully examines the complex military situation and the unfinished civil war between the island and the mainland. He discusses, too, the war of diplomacy between the two Chinas, carrying his account into the 1970s and Taiwan's expulsion from the U .N. With insight and understanding, he describes Taiwan's fight for survival as an independent state and its effort to maintain commercial relations, particularly with Japan. The book concludes with a carefully reasoned analysis of Taiwan's role in U.S.~China relations. Clough's prognosis for the future is marred neither by a pessimist's despair over complexity nor by an optimist's blindness to unhappy facts. His book is a model of historical scholarship combined with the insights derived from practical experience and fieldwork. It will be invaluable to all students, scholars, legislators, and businessmen involved in the formulation of a U.S.~China policy.

The authors, Jerusalemites from the spheres of politics, journalism, and the military, have themselves been players in the drama that has unfolded in east Jerusalem in recent years and appears now to be at a climax. They have also had access to a wide range of official documents that reveal the making and implementation of Israeli policy toward Jerusalem. Their book discloses the details of Israel's discriminatory policies toward Jerusalem Arabs and shows how Israeli leaders mishandled everything from security and housing to schools and sanitation services, to the detriment of not only the Palestinian residents but also Israel's own agenda. Separate and Unequal is a history of lost opportunities to unite the peoples of Jerusalem. A central focus of the book is Teddy Kollek, the city's outspoken mayor for nearly three decades, whose failures have gone largely unreported until now. But Kollek is only one character in a cast that includes prime ministers, generals, terrorists, European and American leaders, Arab shopkeepers, Israeli policemen, and Palestinian schoolchildren. The story the authors tell is as dramatic and poignant as the mosaic of religious and ethnic groups that call Jerusalem home. And coming at a time of renewed crisis, it offers a startling perspective on past mistakes that can point the way toward more equitable treatment for all Jerusalemites. Amir S. Cheshin, a retired Israeli army colonel, was Senior Adviser on Arab Community Affairs and Assistant to former Jerusalem Mayor Teddy Kollek. Bill Hutman was a journalist with the Jerusalem Post. Avi Melamed was Deputy Adviser on Arab Affairs to Mayor Kollek and Adviser on Arab Affairs to Kollek's successor, Ehud Olmert.

It is the people of that city in their last unthreatened years who are the subjects of this study. In considering the extraordinary culture of the Aztecs of Mexico it is impossible to ignore the extravagance of their practice of the ritual killing of humans. Inga Clendinnen takes up the challenge of rendering those killings intelligible, not at an ideological or abstract theoretical level, but through investigation of a wide field of social action: the routines, assumptions, and compelling experiences of daily life at all the emotional, moral, and aesthetic levels through which Aztecs sought to understand their world and identify its necessities. The enquiry is first pursued through the provenance and techniques of management of the victims, seeking the various grounds for their acquiescence. The massive material solidity of the late imperial city is explored to illuminate Aztec notions of temporality and change. Clendinnen then gives close attention to specific social organizations, tracing their distinctive forms of internal cohesion with their attendant tensions and their unobvious connections with other social structures. She discusses the worlds of women, of warriors and of priests, and of commoners, showing us that the mundane and taken~for~granted aspects of their lives in fact often had tremendous significance. Similarly, a wide zone of 'art' is investigated for its intimations of the sacred and the real. The whole culminates in an analysis and interpretation of high Aztec ritual and its meanings for participants and watchers alike. It is Clendinnen's re~creation and vividly dramatic analyses of Aztec rituals as performance art that provide the structure of this remarkable study. When so analyzed, the great span of the work of the gods in Tenochtitlan, arching from the main temple precinct through to the most local household observances, is shown to bind the key experiences and obsessive concerns of Aztec social existence in the late imperial city to the mannered violence of their ritual killings. "There is no other book quite like this one. It is probably the best presentation of the Aztec people, their culture, and their city from the point of view of the Aztecs themselves." ~MICHAEL D. COE, Charles J. MacCurdy Professor of Anthropology, Yale University. "Professor Clendinnen, an eloquent writer, a brilliant historian, and a very creative thinker, has crafted an intelligent book that is both informative and truly engaging. Its insightful interpretations add significantly to our understanding of the Nahuatl~speaking peoples of ancient Mexico and to our 'feeling' for the complex and seemingly paradoxical civilization they strung between the extremes of aesthetic concern and ascetic sacrifice." ~ J. Students of Chinese literature and cultural history will have much to learn from the work. . The editing is skillful, drawing out consistent lines of argument to provide even generalists with enough material to frame their own point of view." ~Frederic Wakeman, University of California, Berkeley. One of the most creative and brilliant episodes in modern Chinese history, the cultural and literary flowering that takes the name of the May Fourth Movement, is the subject of this comprehensive and insightful book. Moreover, this is the first study of modern Chinese literature that shows how China's Confucian traditions were combined with Western influences to create a literature of new values and consciousness for the Chinese people. The many distinguished and versatile scholars who have contributed essays to this book demonstrate how romanticism, realism, naturalism, and symbolism were used by young Chinese writers in their search for modernity and the political independence of their country. The luminous literary response that burst forth in the 1920s and 1930s is analyzed in discerning studies of the foreign impact on specific writers like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, Yu Dafu, and Ding Ling, and on the relationship of May Fourth culture to the communist literature that followed. The richly textured essays, full of illuminating judgments, depict these May Fourth cultural leaders as highly articulate and emotionally charged persons who both reflected reality and tried to change it. Their new subjects and literary modes prepared the way for the epochal event of the communist revolution.

From the twelfth to the nineteenth century its political history was dominated by the struggle of competing leagues of fighting men. This paperback volume, comprised of chapters selected from volumes 3 and 4 of The Cambridge History of Japan, traces the institutional development of warrior rule and dominance. Among the topics discussed are the gradual nature of the shift from court aristocrats to military hegemons, the epic battles between the Taira and the Minamoto in the 1180s, the development of a new system of justice, and the fall of Kamakura~which was related to the great invasions launched by the Mongol emperor of China in 1274 and 1281. In addition to discussing the transitions between various regimes, the book describes the proliferation of Akuto, or outlaw bands; the rising level of violence, treachery, and revolt among the military leaders and contenders; and the building of a Tokugawa order. By the eighteenth century, warrior rule had come full circle. Centuries of peace brought a transformation and bureaucratization of the samurai class. Warrior values remained central to the ethical code of modern Japan, however. After the Meiji government was secure, its leaders designed their education and codes to preserve the values of loyalty and fortitude on which their warrior ancestors had prided themselves.

Yet, seemingly every week, feature stories describe genes that may be responsible for personality, intelligence, even happiness. In The Misunderstood Gene, Michel Morange points out that DNA and its genes are the centerpiece of modern biology primarily because they can be modified. But they are only the memory that life invented so that proteins can be efficiently reproduced. There is far more richness and meaning in the structure and interactions of proteins, he tells us, than in all the theoretical speculations on the role of genes. In this tour of recent findings in molecular biology, Professor Morange shows us how genes contribute to biological processes and complex human behavior~when they do. He makes it clear that we do not have to choose between rigid genetic determinism and fearful rejection of any specific role for genes in development or behavior. The Misunderstood Gene demystifies the power of modern genetics and refocuses biology on the many complex interactions that start with our genes, but do not necessarily end there. The sequencing of the human genome, now complete, is just the beginning of the story. This compact, accessible book will engage and enlighten all readers concerned about the promise and peril of genetic research.

The custodian of the tomb was so shaken by the incident that he willingly dedicated the rest of his life to protecting the president's corpse. In a lively and dramatic narrative, Thomas J. Craughwell returns to this bizarre, and largely forgotten, event with the first book to place the grave robbery in historical context. He takes us through the planning and execution of the crime and the outcome of the investigation. He describes the reactions of Mary Todd Lincoln and Robert Todd Lincoln to the theft~and the peculiar silence of a nation. He follows the unlikely tale of what happened to Lincoln's remains after the attempted robbery and details the plan devised by the Lincoln Guard of Honor to prevent a similar abominable occurrence. Along the way, Craughwell offers entertaining sidelights on the rise of counterfeiting in America and the establishment of the Secret Service to combat it: the prevalence of grave robberies: the art of nineteenth~century embalming: and the emergence among Irish imrnigrants of an ambitious middle class~and a criminal underclass. This rousing story of hapless con men, intrepid federal agents, and ordinary Springfield citizens who honored their native son by keeping a valuable, burdensome secret for decades offers a riveting glimpse into late nineteenth~century America and underscores that truth really is sometimes stranger than fiction.

Why is the "argument from design" so tenacious, and does Darwinism~itself still evolving after all these years~necessarily undo it? The definitive work on these contentious questions, Darwin and Design surveys the argument from design from its introduction by the Greeks, through the coming of Darwinism, down to the present day. In clear, non~technical language Michael Ruse, a well~known authority on the history and philosophy of Darwinism, offers a full and fair assessment of the status of the argument from design in light of both the advances of modern evolutionary biology and the thinking of today's philosophers~with special attention given to the supporters and critics of "intelligent design." The first comprehensive history and exposition of Western thought about design in the natural world, this important work suggests directions for our thinking as we move into the twenty~first century. A thoroughgoing guide to a perennially controversial issue, the book makes its own substantial contribution to the ongoing debate about the relationship between science and religion, and between evolution and its religious critics.
