Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. Frontispiece, xv, 368 pp; text figs. Original cloth. Near Fine, in dust jacket (for the purists out there, you will be relieved to learn the dust jacket is not price-clipped!). First Edition. SIGNED BY VICTOR WEISSKOPF TO SALVADOR LURIA: "To Salva/ in friendship/ from Viki/ March 1973." In his autobiography The Joy of Insight, Passions of a Physicist, Victor Weisskopf wrote this about bringing Salvador Luria to MIT: "In one respect, however, I found MIT lagging. I was amazed that a major scientific institution could exist without a department of molecular biology. . . . It must have been around 1955 that I had a serious talk about MIT's biology department with Provost [Julius] Stratton. I pointed out that molecular biology was developing rapidly but MIT had no part in this growth. I suggested that some experts in the field be invited so that they could advise MIT leadership. Stratton took up my suggestion, and a number of young, active biologists were subsequently brought to MIT including Cyrus Leventhal, Salvador Luria and Alex Rich" (pp. 159-160). "Victor Frederick Weisskopf was a major figure in the golden age of quantum mechanics, who made seminal contributions to the quantum theory of radiative transitions, the self-energy of the electron, the electrodynamic properties of the vacuum, and to the theory of nuclear reactions. In the broader arena through his writings and actions he was an effective advocate for international cooperation in science and human affairs. In 1981 he shared the Wolf Prize for physics with Freeman Dyson and Gerhard't Hooft for 'development and application of the quantum theory of fields.' In 1991 he was awarded the Public Welfare Medal of the National Academy of Sciences 'for a half-century of unflagging effort to humanize the goals of science, acquaint the world with the beneficial potential of nuclear technologies, and to safeguard it from the devastation of nuclear war.' As a member of the Pontifical Academy of Sciences he was instrumental in persuading the Pope to speak on the dangers of nuclear weapons" (quoted from the Biographical Memoir of Weisskopf by J. David Jackson and Kurt Gottfried, Biographical Memoirs of the National Academy of Sciences, Vol. 84, 2003; the memoir can be read in its entirety online for free). Salvador E. Luria shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1969 with Max Delbrück and Alfred D. Hershey "for their discoveries concerning the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses." ISBN 0262230569. Signed by Author(s).
