Dorson. Probably in no other country has the marriage of folklore studies and nationalism produced such dramatic results as in Finland. The turning point in the struggle for independence was the intensifying nationalistic sentiment produced by the publication, in 1835, of Elias Lonnrot's Kalevala, an epic based on folk poetry. In the following decades a small band of Finnish scholar~patriots dug deeply into Finnish folklore to forge a literary language, create a national culture, and reconstruct the prehistoric period of the nation's past independence. Both the political right and the political left used folklore to battle each other. This instructive book is the story of that battle as well as of the struggle for independence. In the use of folklore for historical reconstruction, the principal goal was to search the past for models on which to shape the future. The reconstructions of the past, therefore, were not simply accounts of past events but attempts to find in earlier peasant society a record of the Finnish national spirit ~a repository of the national soul. Thus Finnish scholars turned to their folklore record, and particularly to their heroic poetry, to delineate both the actions and the spirit of the ancient Finns. They then urged their countrymen to serve the fatherland by emulating the performance of their illustrious forbears and by recapturing the spirit that had driven them to deeds of high renown. In consideration of these facts, it is scarcely surprising to find folklore theory adapting to shifting official ideology and to discover that national needs and national goals very often determined the direction of folklore research and colored the conclusions of folklore scholars. Wilson begins by tracing the development of Finnish national consciousness during the periods of Swedish and Russian rule, focusing particularly on the growing interdependence of folklore studies and nationalism. The next section shows the culmination of these folkloristic~nationalistic pursuits in the tense decades between the winning of Finnish independence and the end of World War II. The final section traces the collapse of militarist~expansionist sentiment accompanying the postwar reassessment of Finnish folklore, with the Viking fighter~hero of traditional interpretation transformed into a wise shaman. By showing how respected folklore scholars allowed themselves to be swayed by political issues, Wilson raises important questions about the proper use of folklore~and indeed of all the humanities.
