"Henry Selby Msimang was one of the great South Africans of the twentieth century. Born in 1886 in Edendale, Pietermaritzburg, he was a founding member, interpreter and assistant to the secretary general of the African National Congress in 1912; a president of the pioneering Industrial and Commercial Workers Union in the 1920s and 1930s; the general secretary of the All African Convention in the 1930s; a member of the Natives Representative Council and provincial secretary of the Natal ANC in the 1940s and early 1950s; a prominent member of the Liberal Party in the 1950s and 1960s; and thereafter a founder and executive member of the Inkatha Yenkululeko Yesizwe in the 1970s. An intellectual figure of remarkable talent, Msimang was a prolific and passionate author, journalist and public debater - and a man who, despite great hardships and adversity, did not compromise his principles or his steadfast commitment to the struggle for freedom, justice and human rights.".

234 x 168 mm; laminated pictorial wrappers; pp. xix + (i) + 467, incl. index; plates. Fine condition. "Cricket and Conquest is simply the finest book ever written about sport in South Africa. It should sit alongside the works of CLR James and Ramachandra Guha in the library of every cricket lover. For the first time Odendaal, Reddy, Merrett and Winch tell the complete and unvarnished story of South African cricket: black and white and people called coloured, male and female. They have left no archive unexamined and no story unscrutinised in their quest for the truth. This book is not only a major work of scholarship, it is a work of passion: for cricket, for social justice and for a history that includes all those who ever swung a bat or bowled a ball." - Prof Tony Collins, former Director of the International Centre for Sports History and Culture at De Montfort University.
