Hardcover. First Ed UK, so stated. First Ed UK, so stated. Very Good+ in Near Fine DJ: Book shows indications of careful use: light shelf-rubbing along the bottom edge and a bit of crimping to the heel of the backstrip; small, faint smudge at the top edge; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows only the mildest rubbing; price intact. Overall, remains clean, sturdy, and quite presentable. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 8vo. 213pp. Translated by Lydia G. Cochrane. (Family, Sexuality and Social Relations in Past Times Series). Hardback with DJ. In 15th-century France, public prostitution was condoned by all sectors of society. Clerics and municipal officials not only tolerated prostitution, but were often its principal beneficiaries, owning and frequenting brothels quite openly. The explanation of this remarkable state of affairs is one topic covered in this book, which reconstructs a part of medieval society that has previously received relatively little attention. Drawing upon research in medieval archives, the author shows that most 15th-century Frenchwomen could expect a life of constant subjugation to male desire. Rape was common and considered a minor crime. He then considers whether public prostitution might paradoxically have been seen by the secular and religious authorities as a means of social control, and of preserving marital stability: the virtue of wives and daughters was best protected by the existence of public brothels, where sexual urges could be satisfied without adultery and rape. The book describes the social background of the prostitutes, brothel-keepers, pimps and their clientele, showing that for many of those involved in it prostitution was an acceptable occupation. This work focuses on 15th century France and the thorough subjugation of women in all walks of life. Although most prostitutes were forced into the trade, many of them enjoyed better lives, physically and socially, than 'respectable' women.

Printed wrappers, 8vo, 20 cm, 70 pp. From the blurb: "Maida Stanier, the wife of the Master of Magdalen College School, has long identified herself with the Oxford scene. An amused and sympathetic spectator, she has written about it as Culex in the Oxford Times and under her own name in The Countryman, Country Life, The Spectator The New Statesman and The Oxford Magazine. Her verses have been broadcast on Midland Regional and General Overseas programmes. She has already published three books of verse: Light and Shade, Culex's Guide to Oxford, and Free and Easy. Reviewing the last, John Betjeman wrote: 'The essentially Oxford quality of all the pieces in the book. lead me to believe that Mrs. Stanier, who is modest enough to keep within her range, may produce a volume of Oxford verses which will have as memorable and nostalgic a quality as Belloc's recollection of pre-Morris Oxford. ' This volume, portraying Oxford of 1961 where Town and Gown are irrevocably committed to each other, justifies John Betjeman's hope. Everyone who knows Oxford as a City or as a University will find much in it to amuse and to catch the heart." Good.
