First Edition Thus (1970) , Second Printing (1973). Mass Market Paperback. Masked Gods is a vast book, a challenging and profoundly original account of the history, legends, and ceremonialism of the Navaho and Pueblo Indians of the Southwest. Following a brief but vivid history of the two tribes through the centuries of conquest, the book turns inward to the meaning of Indian legends and ritual Navaho songs, Pueblo dances, Zuni kachina ceremonies. Enduring still, these rituals and ceremonies express a view of life, of man's place in the creation, which is compared with Taoism and Buddhism and with the aggressive individualism of the Western world. Frank Waters (1902 - 1995) was an American writer. He is known for his novels and historical works about the American Southwest. He was as remarkable as his contributions to the collective knowledge of Native American peoples. Masked Gods is unmatched as a chronicle of the spiritual worlds of the major cultures of the vast Colorado Plateau area Waters roamed for much of his life. Beautifully written, it was discounted by many academics for its romantic point of view, but it has lasted far longer than most standard texts on anthropology. Waters spent his life experiencing and writing about mysticism and Native American cultures; in my opinion, his personal commitment elevates much of his work above others in the field. He was nominated for the Nobel prize several times, but never won the award. ; MMP First Edition [1970] unstated; Second Printing.

Very Good+ in Wraps: shows only the most minute indications of use: just a hint of wear to extremities; mildest rubbing; "Daybreak School" in ink at the top of the front endpaper; crease along the front hinge and another at the top edge of the front panel. Binding show barely discernible lean, but remains perfectly secure; text clean. Very close to 'As New'. NOT a Remainder, Book-Club, or Ex-Library. 12mo. 270pp.Liberally illustrated with duotone drawings and diagrams. Eight-pages section of duotone photographs. This title was first published in hardcover in 1957 by the University of Oklahoma Press. Mass Market Paperback. When the first edition of this book was published in 1957, the art of making a tipi was almost lost, even among American Indians. Since that time a tremendous resurgence of interest in the Indian way of life has occurred, resurgence due in part, at least, to the Laubins' life-long efforts at preservation and interpretation of Indian culture. Besides providing all necessary details on the materials, construction, setting up, and maintenance of a tipi, this book also provides comparisons with alternate designs and why one might be better than another, and gives advice on varying the size to fit your needs. It provides all the essentials, including adjustments for various seasons and types of weather (rain, snow, and wind), layout of living and sleeping space, furniture, storage of supplies, fire building, cooking, recipes, brain tanning, making parfleche containers, and moccasins. Plus it includes a few words about a native ceremony to properly dedicate the new lodge, and describes tipi etiquette for hosts and visitors. Lots of photos, drawings and detailed diagrams are provided.
