This is a collection of essays and interviews from those who were involved in the late 1960s through to the early 1980s in a student organisation within the Australian Catholic Church, the Young Christian Student movement (YCS). An international movement, it was founded in Australia 1942 and was essentially for many years in Australia a secondary Catholic school movement. In other parts of the world, it was a tertiary sector movement. In the 1960s Australia had 25,000 members around the country. Groups varied in size from five or six to twenty-five members. Many Catholic secondary schools, and many dioceses, had YCS groups of senior secondary Catholic school students. By the late 1960s and early 1970s things began to change. The leadership of the movement was changing. Chaplains who had been present for many years began to move on or were encouraged to move on by the student leaders. It was becoming more and more a student led movement, a movement by students for students following the inspiration of Joseph Cardijn the founder of the Young Christian Workers movement (YCW). In the late 1960s the Australian YCS began to participate in international meetings and in the 1970s various leaders, full-time workers from overseas, began to visit Australia. At the leadership level, full-time workers became more aware of what was occurring around the world in oppressive, military led, regimes and of apartheid in South Africa. The leadership became aware of YCS leaders in other places were being imprisoned, beaten or tortured. Material was being sent to the Australian National Office, in Melbourne, from the international office or other YCS groups around the world or from within the Asian region. From the National Office material was disseminated around the country. A rift developed between the bishops and the national leadership. School groups and groups generally began to close or cease to meet. At times this was encouraged by the full-timer workers or by school administrations. Nuns and priests who had been involved in the movements for many years were uncertain of what was happening. Some of the bishops saw the movement as becoming too left wing and too political. Today there are very few groups and students involved in the Australian YCS. Contributors to this volume are now academics, workers in a range of occupations or are retired. It covers jade and bronze ware, gold and silver ware and porcelain ware, pottery, porcelain, painting, calligraphy, and handicrafts. There are 363 relics in the book. In 960, Zhao Kuangtin, commander of the imperial guard troops of the later Zhou Dynasty staged a mutiny at Chenqiao and proclaimed himself emperor. He named his new dynasty the Song Dynasty and chose Dongling Kaifeng for the capital. This dynasty now called the Northern Song in history, gradually eliminated rival regimes and ended the separation of the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms, co-existing with the Liao Regime established by the Qidan ethic group and Western Xia Regime established by the Dangxian ethic group. In 1127 Emperors Huizong and Quinzong were taken captive by the Jin Dynasty established by the Jurchen people, thus ending the Northern Song Dynasty. In the same year, Zhao Gou, then King King, established the imperial court of Song and moved the capital to Linhan (present day Hangzhou City in Zhejiang). This is what history calls the Southern Song Dynasty, and formed a glance at the Jin and Western Xia. In this period, thanks to easy politics and a relatively emancipated ideology, great achievements were obtained in various scientific technologies, theoretical trends, academic schools, religious thought and literary creation and the arts also showed an unprecedented prosperous science. Jade ware penetrated various aspects of social life, and he shapes, decorations and patterns all showed a distinctive secularisation. The invasion of northern nomads introduced a new cultural atmosphere to the Central Plains. The porcelain kilns could be found everywhere and finally developed into eight major systems: Ding, Yaozhou, Cizhou, Jun, Yuezhou, Longquan, Jingdezhen blueish white porcelain and Jian kilns. As well, there were four major royal kilns: Ru Kiln and Jun Kiln of the Northern Song Dynasty and Xiunesisi Kiln and Jiaotanxia Kiln of the Southern Dynasty. The arts of calligraphy and painting were typical representatives of the flourishing culture in the Song Dynasty. During this period an imperial art academy was founded, enlisting folk artists and a large number of professional painters were trained. Calligraphers of the Northern and Southern Song Dynasties inherited previous styles but also emphasised the representation of the individual subjective will. Other handicrafts developed: gold and silver ware tended to be light, handy and graceful. In the Song Dynasty, people has less costly funerals so less jade has been unearthed. Those that have are in: Sichuan, Zhejiang and Jiangxis. The emphasis is on practical utensils, drinking vessels, dress adornments and accessories. At the same time, there was progress in the technologies of jade carving: layered piercing and large-scale jade ware. This book, the sixth in a ten-volume collection, brings to the English-speaking world a series of books from China which has been complied by an Expert Committee of the Chinese Society of Cultural Relics. They had come from Adelaide in response to an invitation from the Catholic bishop of Ba--thurst to establish a foundation of the newly founded Congregation in his diocese-the first Josephite foundation in New South Wales. Sister Teresa McDonald was the leader or Superior of the founding community. Born in Scotland in 1838, she had come to Australia with her parents finally settling in Adelaide. A friend of both Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867. This book explores her early life and her time as a Sister of St Joseph in Adelaide where she served as the first Provincial of the Congregation in South Australia.
