Her intellectual life, rmly rooted in Australian culture, was focussed on stripping the thin veneer of our dominant materialistic culture to forgea greater understanding of our place in a more just world. One-time member of the ABC Board, Brady was a wine-loving, bike-riding, diminutive gure with a erce reputation for plain speaking. An expert on Australian literature, and living life as a "communist" in a community of Loreto nuns, teaching, she cut a non-conformist gure in an age when the humanist values she upheld seemed increasingly under threat. She strove to defend them with a sharp mind, a contemporary Christian theology, and a willingness to put her boots on the ground in street protests.e essays gathered here by colleagues, students, friends and family bring her compassion, interests and concerns to life with an immediacy, fondness and respect. She inspired others, through her writings, actions and teaching, and the essays reveal her larger-than-life character, her passion for teaching, her concerns for justice for Indigenous Australians, and the intellectual and spiritual legacy she bequeathed to us all. No other religion professes its faith with the image of a capital punishment. It was a gruesome form of torture and death in the ancient Roman Empire, and yet women and men wear this symbol on chains around their necks, on commitment rings or badges; they sign themselves with a Cross before prayers and even sports people are seen making this sign before an event. In his years of teaching and writing, Tony Kelly has continuously explored they 'why' of this symbol. Apart from the historical, political reasons that led to Jesus' death in this brutal way, why this form of death; where was God on Golgotha; what was the purpose or meaning of this death; could it have been avoided? These are just some of the questions raised on the cross of Jesus. Such questions were first asked by Jesus' friends and followers who seem to have had such high expectation of him. But these 'had hopes' (Lk 24:21) were shattered on Golgotha. The shock of his death was compounded by the further shock of his return to them - they named their experience as resurrection - a word only associated with the 'last days'. Death was one thing. Resurrection compounded the questions. As Jews, these friends and followers puzzled their experience in the light of their Jewish scriptures and traditions. First Paul, then the Gospel writers, and then John, the visionary, mined their scriptures and theology to find ways to communicate the inexpressible. From the Foreword by Mary Coloe, PBVM Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. This volume of essays examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. From the announcement of the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI (Joseph Ratzinger) on 11 February 2013, through to the election of Pope Francis (Jorge Mario Bergoglio SJ) on March 13 these essays come from a number of writers, theologians and poets. It is a contribution to what will be an ongoing assessment of the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, an examination of the days of the 2013 conclave and gives some background to the Argentinian, Jesuit of many years standing, Pope Francis. "Ave Atque Vale"-Hail and Farewell-is how the Roman poet Catullus ends his elegiac tribute to his deceased brother and has always been used to mark an end and a beginning. Whether it was 600 or 900 years since a pope resigned, the action is unprecedented in the modern papacy. What led Benedict XVI to resign is a matter of pure speculation, and the confirmation of what motivated the action really relies on one source-Joseph Ratzinger. Was it exhaustion and the effects of his advanced age?Was it the recognition that his vision and practice, far from helping the church, actually contributed to the chaos the church now finds herself in at an administrative level? Only one person can give that answer. With the election of Jorge Maria Bergoglio SJ to the See of Peter, the script has changed and new sets of players, promising to kick towards different goalposts, are now coming into place. There are rising expectations that, inevitably, will have to be qualified by experience. A new style can lead in many directions. The new pope is no heavyweight theologian. He is an intelligent pastor. He knows things are not working. But what will he do? At 76, and with some health issues, Pope Francis cannot be expected to be in office for a long time. He may follow Benedict's precedent and the customary habit in the Jesuits of six-year terms for leaders. Whatever his tenure, it is bound to be an experience of a very different pope to the last two.The volume of essays is edited by Michael Kelly SJ and includes contributions by Andrew McGowan, Constant Mews, Andrew Hamilton SJ, Joel Hodge, Brian Lucas, Michael Mullins, Neil Ormerod, James McEvoy, and Philip Harvey, as well as poets Barry Gittins, Brian Doyle, Anne Hunt, Anne Elvey, Rachael Kohn BA Breen. Most of the pieces first appeared in Eureka Street in February and March 2013. Examines a short one month period in the life of the Catholic Church in 2013. For those parched for relief from straitening patterns of thinking and self-absorbed myopia she has been a refreshing breeze, bringing hope to the heart and vision to the imagination. This book brings together a selection of her addresses that dare to suggest that there is a mystery beckoning us into something new, that is not satisfied with the way things are and that dares to believe that novels and poetry bear witness to this ministry. She calls this mystery God, not with any confident triumphalism but as an other (who speaks through others) that subverts such a corrosive vice seeping through contemporary society. For her, God leads to other places, even to that which is not God. So from Marcus Clarke to Judith Wright, from Primo Levi to Kim Scott, she drinks in the refreshment of new possibilities which sacred texts have often lost under a pall of imperial conventionality. She discovers in these early and contemporary writers a way into the potential of The God Shaped Hole, where is found the call and narrative of the necessity of remembrance, of balm for suffering, and pathway hints into a respect for Aboriginal Australians and the land of their identity. A selection of Veronica Brady's addresses that dare to suggest that there is a mystery beckoning us into something new, that is not satisfied with the way things are, and that dares to believe that novels and poetry bear witness to this ministry. The global world is one in which cultures and religions increasingly meet and mix, engage in various ways, and where groups advocate the recognition of their cultural and/or ethnic identity. Enhancing Understanding - Advancing Dialogue: Approaching Cross Cultural Communication aims to facilitate encounters with other cultures and their members by examining how it is approached in the West. The books asks: What are some taken-for-granted assumptions brought into attempts to understand members of other cultures' What are some of the basic premises used when we meet someone from another culture, or see theeir behaviour on TV, or read about their perspectives in the print media' While engaging the author's western counterparts rather than cultural interlocutors, the book explores some adverse assumptions which tend to be smuggled into cross cultural understanding, including those from popular views about science and social science, postmodernism, tolerance and neutrality. Enhancing Understanding - Advancing Dialogue argues that a first step to an increasingly sympathetic awareness and understanding of others, their cultures and religions, can be aided by examining and challenging entrenched social claims and values. Rodney Fopp teaches at the University of South Australia, Adelaide. In order to mark the bicentenary of the foundational dream that Saint John Bosco experienced when only nine years of age (1824), this book offers readers reflections on a number of biblical and theological themes that emerge from the simplicity yet depth of that dream. In the first place, certain elements from the life and person of Jesus are presented as the model for a so-called Salesian' spirituality and life-style. Those elements are outlined as an awareness that Jesus never abandons his fragile disciples, and that a genuinely Christian education writes on the hearts of the young. They are never abandoned in the challenging all-pervasive secularity of contemporary society. It closes with a summons to a deeper awareness of the universal possibility of 'the perfection of love' as Saint Francis de Sales (15671622) taught, well before his fellow Savoyard, John Bosco (18151888). I was interested in studying the relationship that exists between art and theology when Fr Juan Manuel Almarza OP, who at the time was my studies advisor and a great admirer of Pe Kim, insisted that this name could not be omitted from my study. So I discovered this artist via an Internet page, and I became totally fascinated by his work from the very moment his first painting appeared before my eyes on the computer screen. Since that day, a lot of time has gone by, years during which I have explored the captivating universe of Pe Kims artistic productions, following him in a near-obsessive way, delving deep into his work and getting to the bottom of his message with great excitement. What is the effect of the question mark? Does the interrogative question the future of Karl Barths approach to theology, make a claim for Barth as a postmodern theologian, or challenge the notion of postmodern theology altogether? These papers pose sharply the question of how the name Karl Barth and the term postmodern relate, or, more pointedly, how or whether theology as understood and practised by Barth and self-declared postmodern theology have anything to do with each other at all. from the epilogue by Wes Campbell Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Having fled poverty and segregation in rural Australia in the 1950s and 60s, they set about fulfilling their vision a new way of living, where Aboriginal people could control their own lives politically, economically and culturally.Redfern: Aboriginal activism in the 1970s is the previously untold story of how they set about fulfilling their dreams. In a fast-paced burst of creativity and hard work, in just three years an Aboriginal health service, a housing cooperative, a legal service, a child care centre and a black theatre in Redfern were established. They had some support, and the promise of self-determination under the newly elected Whitlam's Labor government, but there was also abuse and discrimination. This is the story of how, with hard work, humour and vision, they prevailed to build organisations that have served as models for similar organisations all over Australia.'A timely and overdue study of one of the most exciting time periods in Aboriginal political history.' - Professor John Maynard'The 1960s gave protest a voice. By the early 70s, the Aboriginal voice had become very loud near the heart of Sydney, in Redfern. It was thrilling. Drawing on a range of historical and research literature, interviews, and surveys, The politics of identity explores Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal understandings of Aboriginality and the way these are produced and reproduced across a range of sites and contexts.Carlson points to the multiple, yet narrow definitions of Aboriginal identity that have existed throughout Australia's colonial history and its continuing impact upon contemporary Aboriginal identities. Emphasising Indigenous debates and claims about Aboriginality, The politics of identity explores both the community and external tensions around appropriate measures of identity and the pressures and effects of identification.Extracted in Inside Story. Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara offers a unique perspective on the life and making of this Aboriginal Western Arnhem clever man or marrkidjbu.Born at the end of the 19th Century when the Western world had scarcely touched Arnhem Land, Paddy Compass Namadbara acted as a healer for his countrymen and became a powerful and revered leader. Using his clever abilities and wisdom to nurture his community, he enabled the community to deal with the cultural and social changes of the encroaching Western world. He achieved the reputation of being one of the most powerful and clever of traditional marrkidjbu described as 'a proper number one champion!'Based on stories told by the people he helped, some profoundly and in extraordinary ways. This unique biography looks at his life through the eyes of his Western Arnhem countrymen who witnessed his extraordinary abilities. Ian White, researcher and compiler for Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara, encourages readers to give greater consideration to the reality of the extraordinary abilities of clever people such as Paddy Compass.'Ian White's book offers a unique historical glimpse into an Aboriginal world on the cusp of change due to European incursion; it reveals an authentic insight into the special relationship of the 'clever man' with his Dreaming spirits and his process of initiation into the special knowledge of a marrkidjbu. White compiled his generalised account of 'Old Paddy', aka Paddy Compass Namadbara, from a number of West Arnhem people for whom Old Paddy had been a major figure in their lives. Recording various accounts, White's extraordinary work shows Old Paddy's special talent for healing the sick, exercising wisdom, and having visions in which he foresaw future events, for which he offered guidance and strategies for dealing with Western encroachment. Old Paddy's visions of the future foretold major events that were astonishing in the 1950s: Aborigines would get paid for their work, would own land and cars, and that money issues would bring division. All of his predictions came true. A rare insight into the world of the Dreaming, this book is unique and essential reading.' - Susan Greenwood, University of Sussex'Forty years since the passing of Paddy Compass Namadbara, his legacy still looms large amongst the people of western Arnhem Land. Ian White has dedicated decades to recording the story of Namadbara's life and here he presents an extraordinary biography as told by the people of this region of the Northern Territory. The anecdotes about Namadbara's exceptional powers as a 'clever man' portray him as a community leader, teacher, sage, mystic, counsellor and healer. These are however more than just marvellous stories that defy explanation and evoke our wonder. The events of Namadbara's life, described by so many witnesses from both sides of the cultural divide, and collated so respectfully in this book, are an ongoing challenge to how various fields of the social and cognitive sciences should deal with such matters.' - Dr Murray Garde OAM, ANU Clever Man: The Life of Paddy Compass Namadbara offers a unique perspective on the life and making of this Aboriginal Western Arnhem clever man or marrkidjbu. This book began when the author realised that, when people said they were fascinated by particular biblical passages, they were usually ones that presented dramatic encounters between people and between God and people. Such are the passages interpreted in this book. They usually set a vivid scene that heightens the dramatic nature of the encounter, and animated dialogue often directly addresses the reader. There is also animated action that is vividly striking and often sudden and unexpected. These features involve the readers themselves and may question them about what they expect. Indeed the dramatic encounters provocatively lead to unexpected new life in the future. Maurice Andrew is a New Zealander who has studied and taught Old Testament Studies in Germany, Nigeria and New Zealand, often in classes composed of people of different genders, ethnicities and churches. Encounters with these people, which have led to new dimensions in the author's life, have possibly influenced his interest in encounters in the Bible. He has written articles and books on Old Testament themes usually with reference the bi- and multicultural context of New Zealand. In this volume we take into account our colonial history and develop a de-colonising hermeneutic which we employ to identify the colonial editing of the text and to retrieve precolonial narratives with which First Nations peoples of Australia may resonate. In the first volume we attempt to de-colonise the narratives of Genesis 1-11 and retrieve pre-colonial legends that are comparable to First Nations ancestral narratives. In Genesis One, for example, we retrieve a Primal Land Narrative in which the primordial ground is born, comes to life, creates life and is named 'Land' by the Creator Spirit. As we work through the traditions of Genesis 1-11 we also discern colonial additions like the mandate to dominate associated with the Imago Dei in Genesis 1.26-28. At the close of the analysis of each narrative, we include the response of First Nations Australia, thereby illustrating, not only the significance of our finding, but also the relevance for First Nations peoples. The great issues of our day emphasise that we are all in this together: startling inequalities, pressures on the environment, continuing hunger and poverty, climate change, economic integration, mass migrations, instant communications and recurring armed conflicts. How do we ensure that these vast developments work for the 'common good', promote greater social equity and better life opportunities, especially for the most disadvantaged? In this issue of Interface, scholars from the Yarra Institute for Religion and Social Policy within Melbourne's University of Divinity tackle key aspects of globalisation. How do we ensure that these vast developments work for the 'common good', promote greater social equity and better life opportunities, especially for the most disadvantaged? Añadir al carritoPaperback. Condición: new. Paperback. In this book, first published in 1988, Nolan believes that in South Africa 'the practice of the struggle is in the practice of faith', and to show this he reviews the central theme of the Christian faith as found in the Old Testament and the preaching of Jesus, the nature of sin and salvation, and of God's action in the world. He also faces the dilemma of Christians who can no longer support the apartheid state that existed at the time he wrote the book. This is a book of contextual theology, a theology rooted in the painful conversion of a Church to the cause of liberation. It is a conversation between Christians, but also a conversation that comes with a challenge to discover the meaning of the Gospel, to find God, in their salvation.
