They arrived in the mining towns of Boksburg, Brakpan and Springs. Coming from a different milieu in England, they found it difficult to fit in. They chose not to get inv…olved with the racial and social animosities, the labour unrest and even the socio-economic factors that led eventually to an apartheid government. Instead they focused on the task of building up parishes. The social situation they encountered led to frustration. Personal relationships between them deteriorated and most of the first group returned overseas unhappy or ill. It was only after 1925 with the arrival of more friars, that the work of building not just churches, but of living communities of priest and people, could begin. It was due to the persistence of two men, Bede Jarrett and Lawrence Shapcote, that the mission survived at all. This is a reprint of the 2017 book and is the first in a newly established Southern African Dominican Series published in the ATF Africa imprint of ATF Press Publishing Group. Sister Teresa McDonald was the leader or Superior of the founding community. Born in Scotland in 1838, she had come to Australia with her parents finally settling in Adelaide. A friend of both Father Julian Tenison Woods and Mother Mary MacKillop, she joined the Sisters of St Joseph in 1867. This book explores her early life and her time as a Sister of St Joseph in Adelaide where she served as the first Provincial of the Congregation in South Australia. It also gives particular attention to Teresa's short years at The Vale, her struggle with ill health and her death in January 1876. It is a contribution to what will be an ongoing assessment of the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI, an examination of the days of the 2013 conclave and gives some background to the Argentinian, Jesuit of many years standing, Pope Francis. "Ave Atque Vale"-Hail and Farewell-is how the Roman poet Catullus ends his elegiac tribute to his deceased brother and has always been used to mark an end and a beginning. Whether it was 600 or 900 years since a pope resigned, the action is unprecedented in the modern papacy. What led Benedict XVI to resign is a matter of pure speculation, and the confirmation of what motivated the action really relies on one source-Joseph Ratzinger. Was it exhaustion and the effects of his advanced age?Was it the recognition that his vision and practice, far from helping the church, actually contributed to the chaos the church now finds herself in at an administrative level? Only one person can give that answer. With the election of Jorge Maria Bergoglio SJ to the See of Peter, the script has changed and new sets of players, promising to kick towards different goalposts, are now coming into place. There are rising expectations that, inevitably, will have to be qualified by experience. A new style can lead in many directions. The new pope is no heavyweight theologian. He is an intelligent pastor. He knows things are not working. But what will he do? At 76, and with some health issues, Pope Francis cannot be expected to be in office for a long time. He may follow Benedict's precedent and the customary habit in the Jesuits of six-year terms for leaders. It describes how theology was practiced at Le Saulchoir, the house of studies of the French Dominican province then in exile in Belgium. There, a distinct…"school of theology" had emerged, one that favoured critical historical investigation of the Christian tradition, including the thought of St. Thomas Aquinas. More interested in locating Aquinas in his own time and place than in drawing speculative conclusions from his works, it differed in orientation and methods from most other schools of theology at the time, including other houses of the Dominican Order.The book's author, Marie-Dominique Chenu (1895-1990) began teaching at Le Saulchoir in 1920, and was an enthusiastic proponent of its distinctive spirit and method. In 1932 he was promoted to master of theology and made regent of studies. He urged theologians to expand the horizons of their curiosity to include the achievements and challenges of their own day. In 1936, in a talk for the feast of St. Thomas, Chenu delivered an enthusiastic address about the work of Le Saulchoir, and was encouraged to turn it into this book. Not content with describing his school's orientation, Chenu was also critical of how theology was being pursued elsewhere, even by Dominicans, even in Rome. Roman Dominicans were displeased with the book, and it was quickly taken out of circulation. In 1942 it was placed on the Index of Forbidden Books and Chenu was removed from his teaching post and banished from Le Saulchoir.Despite its brevity, its limited initial audience, and its condemnation, this little book is historically significant. It represents a major trajectory of modern Catholic theology as it faced the turn to the subject in philosophy and the rise of historical consciousness in theology. Many of the ideas for which it was initially condemned were embraced at Vatican II and have since influenced the methods of contemporary Catholic theology.This translation includes a critical introduction situating the book in its historical context and provides footnotes to assist readers in identifying persons, events, and ideas.
