Reprint, stapled. Condición: Gut. pp. 201-205. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of the ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - With dedication of the author. - Cover slightly bumped, author's name and title handwritten on cover, otherwise good and clean. - From the text: What was it that defined humanists? What did they share? In 1955 Paul Oskar Kristeller gave an answer: "Thus Renaissance humanism was not as such a philosophical tendency or system, but rather a cultural and educational program which emphasized and developed an important but limited area of studies. This area . . might be roughly described as literature . . . Renaissance humanism must be understood as a characteristic phase in what may be called the rhetorical tradition in Western culture." Humanists, then, were students of literature, but with a difference: "It was the novel contribution of the humanists to add the firm belief that in order to write and to speak well it was necessary to study and to imitate the ancients." Humanists, then, were part of an old rhetorical tradition, and if they stood for anything distinctive it was an emphasis on Greek and Latin. Educational reformers, in short; no more. Such was Kristeller's conclusion, and his authority has made it the dominant view today. - Wikipedia: Guillaume Budé (Latinized as Guilielmus Budaeus; 1467 1540) was a French scholar and humanist. He was involved in the founding of Collegium Trilingue, which later became the Collège de France. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550.
