Identified in 1864 and named for the head of the California Geological Survey, Mount Whitney is the tallest mountain in the lower 48 states. Throughout the years, it challenged several accomplished mountaineers who failed to reach its summit; it was as if the mountain were working to confuse and impede them. Finally, the mountain was climbed from the west side by three fishermen from Lone Pine. Mount Whitney has always called to the adventurous heart of the climber. Gustave Marsh put in the trail to the summit and then built the Smithsonian Observatory. Writers and artists have applied their talents to capturing elements of the Whitney experience, and there is fascinating geological, natural, and cultural history that rounds out this original approach to the story of a mountain. 130 pp. Englisch.

In 1911, the Wyoming Legislature approved a bill to create Goshen County, and it was signed by Gov. Joseph Carey. The county was extracted from Laramie County and is bordered by the state of Nebraska, as well as Platte, Laramie, and Niobrara Counties. Goshen County has blossomed from settlers passing through on the Oregon-California trail, which cut across the county, to an area that includes farming and ranching, a railroad transporting coal from the northern part of the state, and several small towns that support schools, post offices, retail entities, factories, and municipal governments. The towns of Torrington, Lingle, Fort Laramie, Hawk Springs, Yoder, LaGrange, Veteran, and Jay Em make up the county. This volume details the growth of Goshen County due to the Homestead Act of 1862, an irrigation project near Hawk Springs, and veterans from World War I who were part of a second round of homesteading. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Mountain men, fur traders, and Native Americans often traveled through Northwestern Wyoming's beautiful upper Wind River Valley. The valley's rugged mountain terrain discouraged permanent settlement until the late 1880s, when homesteaders arrived in search of free land. Most early settlements have vanished, but the tiny community nestled along the Wind River that would become Dubois thrived, and it soon had a bank, store, and saloon. The upper valley's high elevation and short growing season quickly discouraged farming, and those who remained learned to make a living from travelers passing through on their way to visit the recently created Yellowstone National Park. Others earned their living cutting timber in the new national forest that had been set aside to protect Yellowstone. A railroad tie-cutting operation in the national forest supplied the country's railroads with cross ties for more than 40 years. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Bedford Township, labeled 'a most excellent township' by surveyors of the Western Reserve lands, had an abundance of hardwood forests, water for mill sites, and superb farmland. Transportation played a major role in its success when Bedford developed as a stagecoach stop along the trade route between Cleveland and Pittsburgh. When the railroad arrived, the township and the village at the center thrived. Industry giants include McMyler Interstate, the builder of the largest crane in the world, Taylor Chair Company, a chair maker since 1813, and Ben Venue Laboratories, a pioneer in the production of penicillin and pharmaceutical freeze drying. Notable residents include Archibald Willard, the painter of the Spirit of '76, Dr. Theodatus Garlick, a pioneer in plastic surgery and developer of artificial fish propagation, and Elmer Flick, a Baseball Hall of Fame inductee. A bit of luck and hard work from good people have made this area a most excellent township and a good place to call home. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Historic Congressional Cemetery dates from the days when Washington, DC, was a new city on the edge of a malarial swamp. The stones--sandstone tablets with colonial calligraphy, ornate Victorian statues, 20th-century art nouveau carvings, and contemporary markers in shapes as strange as picnic tables and upended cubes--are a time line of the city. The most distinctive stones are 171 cenotaphs; large cubes designed by Capitol architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe from the same sandstone used in the Capitol. They are found nowhere else. The men and women buried under those stones led lives of beauty, courage, struggle, cunning, leadership, and humor--in short, the stories of American history. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The early years of Weatherford yield stories of trials and triumphs as a rowdy frontier town that matured and became known as the 'City of Churches' and the 'City Beautiful.' Created in 1856 as the county seat of newly formed Parker County, Weatherford was lush with grasslands, timber, and fertile soils. In 1858, the two-story brick courthouse was surrounded by log cabins, frame buildings, and tents. For nearly two decades, the town was the principal supply center for points west and a safe haven for settlers seeking refuge from Indian raids. Stalwart men and women nurtured the development of religious, educational, and cultural refinements. But when the Texas & Pacific Railway arrived in 1880, it spurred Weatherford's stature as an agricultural, banking, and commercial center and opened national markets to local cotton and prize-winning watermelons. The historic City Beautiful is still evident today in Weatherford's picturesque courthouse square and quaint tree-lined residential districts. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -On September 7, 1693, in exchange for 10 pounds and a barrel of cider, a former Indian slave named Toby was given a tract of land that became much of present-day Beacon Falls. Included was the scenic valley north of town, where in 1876 the Naugatuck Railroad established High Rock Grove resort. Boating was popular at the dam, whose water powered the local woolen mill. As the popularity of men's shawls declined, the need for rubber footwear grew. So in 1898, the woolen mill transformed into a rubber shoe factory that made Beacon Falls and its Top Notch brand household names. Success motivated the Beacon Falls Rubber Shoe Company to hire the famed Olmsted Brothers in 1915 to create a planned neighborhood on the hill behind the factory. Beacon Falls also chronicles the story of the people--the farmers, the factory workers, the shopkeepers, the teachers, and most of all the families who built this community and have called Beacon Falls home. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Nantucket, a Wampanoag word meaning 'far-away island,' was first settled by Europeans in 1659. The earliest settlers, known as the 'Proprietors,' envisioned a community of farmers and shepherds, but the island found its fortune as a preeminent whaling port in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. During its time under Quaker influence, Nantucket was a cosmopolitan and dynamic place; radical new ideas, like abolitionism and women's rights, found fertile ground in the Quakers' firm belief in equality. As the entrance to the harbor became impassible, Nantucket lost its whaling focus and experienced a general economic decline. Ironically, this downturn and the resulting absence of new building, along with modern cultural change, became the springboard for its later revival. Nantucket was transformed into a tourist destination, an artist colony, and a summer home to the wealthy and famous, with a rich maritime heritage and a proud tradition of historic preservation. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Known as the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley, the land that would eventually become Alhambra was bought by pioneer Benjamin D. Wilson after he decided to abandon a trip to China in 1841. In 1873, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a line directly through the area and brought with it many settlers, ushering in the 'Boom of the 1880s.' The community struggled through the 1890s as the boom went bust, but the residents looked ahead to the 20th century with great optimism. Their enthusiasm paid off on July 11, 1903, when Alhambra was incorporated as a city. In 1915, the city became one of the first chartered cities in Southern California. Throughout the 20th century, the city of Alhambra grew by leaps and bounds, and such expansion continues to this day. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Before its incorporation in May 1957, Santa Fe Springs had a vibrant past that brought the area to prominence several times throughout its history. It was the hub for the early Spanish rancho of Jose Manuel Nieto, the holder of the largest Spanish land grant in California. Later, after a sulfur hot spring was discovered in the area, it became a popular destination for those seeking its curative powers; visitors headed to the Fulton Wells health resort, which was built around the sulfur spring. Following an oil strike in 1919, a dramatic change occurred in the area as oil derricks and refineries soon covered the landscape. Santa Fe Springs then became a destination for those seeking their fortunes. Such famous people as Alfonso Bell and J. Paul Getty started their careers here in one of the largest oil strikes in the country. Today, Santa Fe Springs is a thriving city, proud of its fusion between residents and industry and its roots that go back to a small, Native American, Tongva village. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The headwaters of the San Lorenzo River are just 15 miles from the city of San Jose and just 15 miles from the city of Santa Cruz, both thriving towns during the Mission period. Even so, a steep canyon, an almost impenetrable forest, and formidable grizzly bears ensured that these headwaters remained unexploited by Westerners until the 1880s. Once the rich natural resources such as vast forests of redwood lumber, lime deposits, and tan oaks were discovered, this virgin landscape was pillaged and plundered. A few enlightened individuals understood that the clear-cutting techniques of the lumber companies would soon result in the total loss of this natural wonder. Their endeavors resulted in the founding of California's first state park at Big Basin, saving this precious resource for future generations. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Surrounded by wetlands and the Charles River, Millis' good soil and plentiful water set the stage for farm development in the early 18th century. The population of Millis remained primarily a community of scattered farms, while industry consisted of small mills and the Holbrook Bell Foundry and Pipe Organ Factory. In 1880, Lansing Millis purchased Oak Grove Farm and turned it into a commercial enterprise consisting of dairy farms and stores with outlets in Boston. Four years later, Lansing Millis, Henry LaCroix, and Henry Millis founded the Clicquot Club Ginger Ale and Extracts Company; Herman Shoe Company and Metal Edge Factory were established soon after. Each of these companies took advantage of the area's ample sources of water and built on sites next to the newly established railroad for easier shipping. A thriving hotel business, referred to as the 'Borscht Circuit,' was established in 1898 and remained in business until World War II. The hotels and industries are now gone, but it is evident in the collection of vintage images in Millis that the community has retained its small-town character and bucolic settings. 130 pp. Englisch.

Today, the area's many farming families--including the Wyckoffs, Shauls, and Barbers--continue the farming tradition. The Schoharie Creek defines the valley and the many hamlets and villages along its banks, including Gilboa, North Blenheim, Breakabeen, Fultonham, Middleburgh, Schoharie, Gallupville, Central Bridge, Sloansville, and Esperance. The creek has greatly impacted the Schoharie Valley's landscapes and lifestyles, from the construction of the Gilboa Dam and the destruction of Gilboa village in the 1920s, to baptisms in the creek near Sloansville. Through vintage images, The Schoharie Valley celebrates these quaint communities that have thrived and survived for generations and continue to draw residents and visitors alike.' 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Many historians believe that Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon was describing the landscape of Ponte Vedra Beach when he first stepped ashore the land that he named La Florida, or 'place of flowers.' After exploring the area north of present-day St. Augustine, he proclaimed it a place of lush landscapes and beautiful beaches. Since that day in April 1513, people from all walks of life have delighted in the natural beauty of the area. They were drawn to the charming land for many reasons, but miners who came to dig minerals out of the beach sand were the first to visually capture its history. They brought cameras with them when they arrived in the early 20th century and left behind a rich trove of photographs. Those who followed recorded their own history in photographs, and the charm and character of the land is evident in the images that fill this book. 130 pp. Englisch.

Strong Vincent, one of Gettysburg's most notable heroes, Waterford has always had its place in shaping America as a nation. Lake LeBoeuf, with its beauty and great fishing, made Waterford a well-known summer resort area. Today, there are a variety of businesses and a fine farming industry, the rewards of which can be seen at the local community fair in September. James Scrugham by brothers John and Fay Perkins from Overton, Nevada. Excavations of the archaeological ruins began in 1924, when archaeologist Mark Raymond Harrington identified the ruins as Ancestral Puebloan (more commonly known as Anasazi), a significant archaeological discovery in Southwestern archaeology. Harrington named the world-famous sites Pueblo Grande de Nevada, but the media dubbed them the Lost City, and the name stuck. Excavation continued into the 1930s, when the National Park Service took over the excavation of the sites using young men employed by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The CCC boys not only helped to excavate but they also built the Lost City Museum, an institution devoted to highlighting the archaeological wonders of the Lost City. 130 pp. Englisch.

Called the 'Emerald of the Plain,' Dunellen was promoted as a resort with stagecoaches taking tourists from the Railroad Depot to Washington Rock and other resort locations several times a day. By the turn of the century, Dunellen had become an industrialized community with companies specializing in steel fabrication, printing, and brick and concrete block production. In its heyday, over 1,200 grand homes lined the shoreline from Eaton's Neck to Great Neck and as far south as Old Westbury. With inspiration from around the globe, as well as the development of many new American styles, an architectural renaissance occurred, bringing together the greatest artisans, architects, landscape architects, and designers to create an exclusive enclave that flourished until World War II. Captains of industry, founding families, and even royalty called Long Island home. Everyone from Morgan, Woolworth, Vanderbilt, Hearst, Field, and Phipps to the Duke of Windsor resided here. Lavish parties celebrated weddings, Lindbergh's transatlantic flight, and other events. Today, approximately one-third of these houses still survive in various states, providing a glimpse of what was the Gold Coast. 130 pp. Englisch.

The city was home to a famous racehorse and its owner, the site where Charles Lindbergh's plane crashed, and a prominent ship-building industry that thrived during World War II. It all started in 1852 when a small trading post was established at the mouth of the Credit River where it empties into the Minnesota River. Soon, the town of Hamilton was established, and its residents made a living farming and trading. In the early 1900s, Marion Willis Savage purchased a pacer named Dan Patch and built the International Stock Food Farm along the river. In 1904, the depot agent suggested Hamilton be renamed Savage after the man who brought notoriety to the town with Dan Patch, a horse that set records and charmed crowds until his death in 1916. Today, the horse that was viewed as a symbol of the past serves as a beacon to residents who continue to celebrate the city's heritage along with the natural beauty of the community. 130 pp. Englisch.

Houston Police Department historian Denny Hair wrote, 'As befitted a frontier community, the meeting of justice in Houston was swift and uncompromising. Trials were conducted in an informal manner with little attention paid to formal rules of evidence and legal procedure.' Eventually, conditions changed and law enforcement became more sophisticated. The 'Bayou City' population went from 44,633 in 1900 to almost 1 million by 1960. 'Houston' was the first word spoken from the moon, thus it became 'Space City' and, ultimately, the nation's fourth-largest city. Its police department weathered decades of mayoral appointment for every officer before state civil service reform in the 1940s. It also met the civil rights years better than most cities and saw dramatic change with the 1982 appointment of Lee Brown as the first African American police chief of a large American city. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Fertile land lured settlers to Andrew County in the 19th century, and the productive land exerted its hold on farm families for generations thereafter. As America shifted from farm to city life, Andrew County remained a collection of rural towns serving the needs of nearby farms. Country people came to town to get their mail or shop at the general store. On the courthouse square, they gossiped with friends and neighbors. Their rural way of life, however, never isolated them from economic or technological change, nor from the nation's vibrant popular culture. In the 20th century, farm families drove to town to enjoy The Wizard of Oz at a movie theater. Kitchens became outfitted with electric ranges and refrigerators, and a mastery of the 'science of agriculture' proved necessary to manage large and mechanized farming operations. In short, county residents displayed a remarkable ability to adapt to change while retaining their traditional values. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The American River Canyon below Auburn is seen as a natural and scenic area but still contains signs of an extensive historical past. This includes historic bridges and bridge sites dating back to the 1850s. The 1849 Gold Rush brought 75 years of mining that ended after massive dredges worked the river for its gold in the 1910s. Unique to the canyon is the Mountain Quarries Railroad, which traveled its way across 17 trestles and an elegant, still-standing concrete bridge to reach the main line in Auburn. The long-stalled Auburn Dam is the latest incarnation of earlier dams, like the 1890s Birdsall Dam that diverted water for 50 years through the North Fork Ditch to communities downstream. 130 pp. Englisch.
