Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Beaufort, bordered by the waters of Taylor's Creek and Beaufort Inlet, is a picturesque, thriving coastal town, filled with rich traditions and a unique North Carolina heritage. Historic homes and shops, many predating the birth of George Washington, stand majestically in the shadows of graceful live oak trees. The town's sidewalks are lined with white picket fences, distinguished by a rainbow assortment of well-tended flowers. Centered in this beautiful, historic town, the Old Burying Ground is a fascinating treasuretrove of little-known seacoast stories and legends that have shaped Beaufort's identity, from its maritime roots before the Revolutionary War to the present. In Beaufort's Old Burying Ground, you will enjoy a visual tour of one of the East Coast's most interesting and historic cemeteries, where you will learn the stories of patriots, privateers, and pirates who played a strategic role in the area's history and were buried within the cemetery's confines. Through these different tales and legends, an extraordinary tapestry is woven of star-crossed lovers, victims of the Yellow Fever epidemic of 1864, the American Indian 'Wars and Massacres,' family histories, Confederate spies' daring deeds, shipwrecks, and the sadness of young lives snuffed out too soon. 98 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Known by the French settlers of the eighteenth century as the Fleuve Rouge, the Red River boasts a fascinating history in Louisiana. It is the state's historic highway along which plantations were built, and upon which their wares went to the great markets of New Orleans and the rest of the world. In this captivating collection of vintage images, the history of navigation on the Red River unfolds. Flowing some 1,300 miles through four states, the Red River is the eighth-longest river in the continental United States. Despite numerous disasters, regular navigation occurred on the river for over a century. Huge craft loaded with North Louisiana cotton plied the river between Shreveport and New Orleans, and packet steamers carried mail and passengers to dozens of stops along the river's path. The showboats traveling along the river brought a new form of entertainment to the cities and towns that lined its banks. Included in this volume are views spanning the Great Raft, the opening of the river to navigation and commerce, the role the river played in the Civil War, and the twilight of commercial steam navigation. The first photographic tribute to the river ever published, Red River Steamboats captures a bygone era in Louisiana's history. 130 pp. Englisch.

George E. and Elizabeth Larkins Sebring eventually settled in East Liverpool, where they ran a grocery business and lived with their ten children. The Sebrings then decided to find property and build a pottery town, as they had been involved in potteries in East Liverpool and East Palestine. They settled on 200 acres of farmland near the Mahoning River, with the railroad running through the property. After a great deal of work in starting the new town, the Articles of Incorporation were filed in 1899. Potteries and homes were constructed, and Sebring became a flourishing town, at one point considered the pottery center of the world. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -The City of Lorain was incorporated in 1874 by the town council. It was named after the county, which had been named by Heman Ely, who thought the area looked very much like the Province of Lorraine in France. Loraina s location next to Lake Erie and the early arrival of the B&O Railroad in 1871 made the city a hotbed for industry. The Hayden Brass Works built a large plant on Elyria Avenue. Captain Thew, a ship captain on the lakes, developed an improved gear system for a steam shovel, and that started the Lorain Thew Shovel Co., which became known worldwide. Lorain grew tremendously in the 1890s. Construction of the Johnson Steel Rail Company started in 1894, and in just ten years, the population of the City of Lorain tripled. In 1894, the American Stove Works built a plant in Lorain, where they made heaters and furnaces. Three years later, the American Shipbuilding Company built a yard and launched hundreds of ships before it closed in 1984. Lorain, Ohio, certainly did its part during World War II; many men went into service, and Lorain produced its own share of heroes. The shipyard was also put to work by the government to build the USS Lorain, a frigate.' 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Milton, once a parish of Rochester, became an official town in 1802, when Lt. Elijah Horn established the first public meeting house at his home on Plummer's Ridge. For years a quiet farming community, Milton became a booming mill town when the area's ice industry experienced tremendous success in the 1880s. The Milton Ice Company, one of five such businesses in town, shipped up to 100 carloads of ice to Boston every day. The town's location as a halfway mark between Boston and the White Mountains also made it a popular stopping place for travelers. In Milton and the New Hampshire Farm Museum, Sarah Ricker takes us on a visual tour through this historic town, illustrating the town's progress in rare images that date from the 1880s to the 1930s. View landmarks in the central areas of town, including West Milton, Central Milton, and Plummer's Ridge, and the various mills that have fostered the community's economic growth. As you leaf through the pages of this book, you will take an amazing trip back in time to the early days of this close-knit community. Along the way, you'll discover the Jones Farm--before it became the New Hampshire Farm Museum--and meet such prominent citizens as Robert Edmund Jones, the man who perfected Technicolor. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -When it was passed in 1789, the Constitution set out the boundaries not only for a new government but for a new capital city as well. At the time, the new District of Columbia covered 5,000 acres, dominated by marshland on the south, pastureland on the area that is now the Mall, farms near the White House and Capitol Hill, and undeveloped woods throughout. Covering Capitol Hill, the Mall, the Old Downtown area, the Ellipse, Lafayette Square, and Foggy Bottom, this engaging photographic history and walking tour documents how the Federal City grew from farmland to world capital. Striking images and detailed captions tell the fascinating stories behind many of the famous and the not so famous buildings and monuments that cover the D.C. landscape, from Union Station and the Capitol to the White House and the Watergate Hotel and many important sites in between. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Agriculture, the backbone of South Carolina's economy since the time of the first settlers in the late 1600s, has truly shaped the identity of the Piedmont region, serving as a common touchstone for the people of the Upstate. As the Palmetto State moves away from small, independent farms into a landscape dominated by big corporations and franchised companies, it is important to pay tribute to the industry that has enabled this state to proceed so successfully into the twenty-first century, both financially and culturally. Farming is much more than 'cattle and crops,' as some may think, and Rural Life in the Piedmont of South Carolina deals with the subject in over 180 striking photographs, displaying the grace, hard work ethic, and inventiveness of these men and women who have toiled under the South Carolina sun. As you thumb through these pages, you will venture into an era not so far in the past, but which seems exceedingly distant and foreign with each passing year. Exploring the rural landscapes between the years 1918 and 1968, this volume will allow you to experience firsthand the people who worked the land, their machinery and homes, the county agents who demonstrated new techniques for farming improvements, and many scenes of different areas in the Upstate with its many different annual harvests, from pigs, chickens, and cows to sorghum, cotton, alfalfa, hay, corn, tobacco, and peaches. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the early part of the 18th century, Talbot County on Maryland's Eastern Shore was restructured in size and boundary, requiring the designation of a new county seat. Groups from the Wye River to Oxford competed vigorously to have their town win the honor. But the selection committee, with manifest partiality, decided upon the geographical center of the new county: a remote field cultivated and then abandoned by its native residents. Here was born the town that would eventually be known as Easton. Telling the story of the original Talbot Court House, the market, early schools, churches, and businesses, this fascinating visual history documents an era of significant change for the town in the early 20th century. Improved roads and transportation allowed the widespread population of the county to come to town; friends and family members could meet more often, and a sense of community identity began to grow. 130 pp. Englisch.

Both Quincy and the county in which it lies, Adams, were named for President John Quincy Adams. In 1822, a man named John Wood built a cabin at the foot of what would later become Delaware Street, near the Mississippi River. As more people came, the village grew eastward from that spot. Many German and Irish immigrants came to Quincy, along with pioneers moving from Kentucky and Virginia. These settlers were lured to the area by reports of the lush land called the 'Jewel of the West,' which was later called 'The Gem City.' Industrialists came from New York and other Eastern states and built many of the stately homes on Maine Street and the adjacent streets. Early industry in Quincy included pork packing, tobacco processing, paper making, stove making, carriage making, the ice industry, and lumberyards. 130 pp. Englisch.

This scenic Appalachian region is primarily a farming community, though mining, timber, recreation, and tourism have also been vital contributors to the county's economy. The small yet vibrant African-American community of Preston County, whose story is told here through family photographs, documents, and memories, is a vital part of the county's heritage. For generations, these families have worked on the land and in the mines; they have raised their children and built their homes in Preston County. Vintage images from as early as the 1860s preserve the African-American story of the mothers and fathers and the mine workers and farmers who have played and continue to play an important role in the history of this beautiful part of the world. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Progress is a contradictory term, one that inherently means an improvement of luxury and an advancement of technology, yet usually at the expense of a community's identity, traditions, and history. Though many buildings survived Civil War skirmishes and Northern occupation during Reconstruction, these same structures did not escape the plans of ambitious entrepreneurs and thus disappeared from Wilmington's landscape, only to be replaced, over time, by shopping plazas and nationally recognizable commercial facades. Cape Fear Lost celebrates places that have vanished from presentday Wilmington. In this volume of more than 200 photographs, you will be able to explore the Wilmington of a bygone era, one punctuated by unpaved tree-lined streets and architecturally diverse dwellings. As you thumb through these pages, you will experience firsthand the beauty of many former mansions scattered throughout the downtown area, familiar churches, civic buildings and schools that once dotted the cityscape, the many businesses that utilized the pedestrian, horse-and-wagon, and shipping traffic along Market Street, and the transformation of Wrightsville Beach and Carolina Beach from humble summer bungalows into major tourist retreats. These varied scenes allow you an extraordinary insight into this coastal community's changing character over the past century and a half. 130 pp. Englisch.

Images of courthouse construction and early pioneering families are among the first glimpses into Weatherford's fascinating history. Other highlights include the development of downtown, forgotten changes to the square, the first city rodeo grounds, photos of the Queen of England sitting for her coronation portrait, as well as rare shots of some of the city's more famous past residents, Larry Hagman and his mother, Mary Martin, and Comanche Chief Quanah Parker. It was virgin territory until just after the Revolutionary War, when New York State designated thousands of acres to be compensation for enlistees in two post-war regiments. By 1808, the population approached 8,000, and people began to petition the state legislature to create a county separate from Onondaga. They named Cortland County after the state 's first lieutenant governor. As you delve into Cortland County, the prolific and diverse photographic collection will take you on a journey into the past, illustrating the nuances of life, both work and play, that have been at the core of Cortland County 's history and prosperity. Learn how these vibrant communities evolved into what they are today through the devotion of the historians at Cortland County Historical Society.' 130 pp. Englisch.

This exposition came at a time in American history when naval reviews, grandiose celebrations, world's fairs, and international expositions were at their zenith of public popularity. These were the days when American imperialism reigned and expositions were an expression of patriotic fervor as never before seen in this country. In Jamestown Exposition: American Imperialism on Parade Volume I, readers will experience this historic event from its early planning and construction, meeting the men responsible for its coordination and success, to the pomp and circumstance of the different exhibits of participating companies, states, and foreign powers. The true-life story of Pocahontas, or Matoaka; the Battle of the Merrimack and Monitor, the exposition's most popular exhibit; and the colorful review of the different world navies, such as the Japanese and British fleets, are just a few examples of the fascinating stories touched upon in this first volume. 130 pp. Englisch.

From Narragansett Pier to Watch Hill Point, this book tells the story of our fascination with life by the sea. Drawn by its clean air and pastoral shores, visitors for generations have come back to 'South County' year after year to fish, swim, sunbathe, and simply rest. Some craved the social whirl of Narragansett, while others opted for the slower lifestyle in rural villages like Matunuck and Jerusalem. Each village and resort had its own identity, which is explored in this collection of postcards and photographs, most from private collections. These pictures show the dramatic changes wrought by the Hurricane of 1938, urban renewal, and development. 130 pp. Englisch.

Prior to that, the war had come only as close as the German submarines stalking targets off the southern coast of the peninsula. In 1943, however, the U.S. Navy commissioned its newest amphibious training base in Fort Pierce, and tens of thousands of young men would eventually prepare for combat on the town's sunny shores. The intensive physical and mental training was hardly 'a day at the beach,' and within a few months, Fort Pierce had become a major military post with a national reputation. It also became the training site of some of the most elite units of the armed forces, including the Scouts and Raiders, U.S. Army Rangers, and the legendary 'frogmen.' 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -An area of hills, forests, and river plains, Lansingburgh is the oldest settled region and the first chartered village in New York's Rensselaer County. Its rich history began with Abraham Jacob Lansing, who, in 1763, established the area that encompasses Lansingburgh on the eastern banks of the historic Hudson River as a 5,000-acre farm. Eight years later, Lansing laid out his land into a square of 2 by 1.5 miles, with 288 building lots, streets, alleys, and an oblong square village green in the center. The influx of New England entrepreneurs transformed Lansingburgh into a thriving village. During the 19th century, industries in oilcloth, brush making, valves, knit goods, beer, crackers and biscuits, scales, and shirts and collars flourished. Lansingburgh businesses became world famous and continued to be so even after the village was made part of the city of Troy in 1900. The Burgh, as it is called today, has made its own contributions to national politics, literature, and sports. In this new book, the author invites us on a journey to an earlier Lansingburgh. More than 200 photographs, most from the archives of the late historian Frances Broderick, show the people, businesses, landmarks, and events that give Lansingburgh its proud 228 years of history. 130 pp. Englisch.

Once part of North Brunswick, it broke away and incorporated as a separate entity in 1860. The city has both an agrarian history and well-defined neighborhoods with fascinating architecture and interesting characters; it has been home to nationally known artist J.C. Thom and noteworthy author Henrietta Christian Wright. This once-rural farming community is now a large, suburban township that takes pride in its ethnic diversity and cultural background. In this new addition to the Images of America series, rare images of this New Jersey township come to life, celebrating the community's rich heritage. Many of the images featured in this collection have been generously contributed by local families and the East Brunswick Museum Corporation. 130 pp. Englisch.

Buch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -In the early days of the nineteenth century, water was a significant means for transporting both goods and people throughout this burgeoning nation, and the state of Florida was no exception. Since Florida has ocean access on the east, west, and south, and numerous waterways that serve the interior, the state's development has been greatly influenced by the rivers that wind through its beautiful and varied landscape. The people and vessels that traveled these waters were an integral part of the region's economy and took part in the often romanticized steamboat era. Of all Florida's natural waterways, the St. Johns River was perhaps the best suited for steamboat use, and the Ocklawaha River was one of its main tributaries. These valuable river routes encouraged the growth and prosperity of such Florida towns as Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Fernandina, and Palatka, and tourist attractions such as Silver Springs. 130 pp. Englisch.
