This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Grand Haven is nestled in wooded dunes and surrounded by the waters of Lake Michigan, Spring Lake, and the Grand River. Under the leadership of Rev. William Montague Ferry, the first settlers arrived from Mackinac Island November 2, 1834. In recognition of the port's large, accommodating and safe harbor, Rix Robinson, fur trader and land holder, platted and named the town April 15, 1835. The approximately 200 photographs in this book are from the archives of the Tri-Cities Historical Museum. They provide an invaluable visual glimpse of the places, people, and events that shaped the Grand Haven area, which also includes Ferrysburg and Spring Lake, in the critical century between 1860 and 1960. In Grand Haven's early years the lumber industry took advantage of the towering white pines that grew for miles around, providing lumber for Chicago, Milwaukee, and other port cities. During this period the mineral water spas in Spring Lake, Fruitport, and Grand Haven spawned the area tourist industry that is still alive today. By 1890 the large tracts of forest were gone and the area sawmills closed. The slack was taken up by the Grand Trunk carferries, which began cross-lake service in 1903, making Grand Haven one of the busiest ports on Lake Michigan for the next 30 years. 130 pp. Englisch.

They tended to think of themselves collectively as a small Italian colony, La Colonia, that made up part of the demographics of the city. In each of the five boroughs, Italians set up many colonie. Several of them dotted Manhattan in East Harlem, the West Village, what is now SoHo, and the downtown area of the Lower East Side, straddling Canal Street, which still identifies Manhattan's Little Italy, the best-known Italian neighborhood in America. Little Italy is made up of stunning photographs culled from numerous private and public collections. It begins with the first phase of immigrants to Lower Manhattan in the early 1800s, including political and religious refugees such as Lorenzo Da Ponte and Giuseppe Garibaldi. In the 1870s, more and more Italian immigrants settled in Little Italy. As the neighborhood grew up around the former Anthony and Orange Streets, New York's first 'Little Italy' emerged. The tumultuous history of the Five Points area, the 'Bloody Ole Sixth Ward,' and many faces and memories from the Italian newspapers L'Eco d'Italia and Il Progresso Italo-Americano are also included in this long-awaited pictorial history. 130 pp. Englisch.

In response to this demand, the Ashe County Historical Society has compiled another collection of over 200 captivating black-and-white photographs along with historical information about this beloved corner of the High Country.Ashe County Revisited focuses on the distinctive geographical features of Ashe County and how the geography shaped the remarkable pioneers who settled the region. These hardy folk came from the relative security of the Piedmont and valleys of Virginia and North Carolina to a mountainous region dominated by 5,000-foot peaks, fertile bottomland, and vast stretches of timberland and meadowland. They forded the many streams feeding the two forks of the New River and carved roads around and through sheer granite walls. They mined ore from the mountains and felled vast timber resources before replanting the forests and developing new industries. The character of Ashe County reflects how these pioneers learned to live with the demands of the harsh mountainous environment. The residents of the county and their myriad accomplishments are celebrated once again in a stunning visual history. 130 pp. Englisch.

When filled to capacity, 12,000 fans joined together to create the noise and heat that defined game night. Indeed, Reynolds Coliseum brought big-time basketball to the South. Most area residents know Reynolds as home to the popular Dixie Classic basketball tournament and the North Carolina State University's Wolfpack championship sports teams. Surprisingly, this building was not constructed specifically for basketball. Like the state of North Carolina, the coliseum's origins grew from agriculture, and it was significantly shaped by the impact of World War II. As home to the long-standing Friends of the College series, the coliseum helped extend cultural events to the general public by promoting 'seven shows for seven dollars.' It has hosted presidents and protesters, circuses and symphonies, tractor demonstrations and rock concerts. And yes, for one ten-year stretch, more people watched college basketball games in Reynolds Coliseum than in any other campus arena in America. This volume captures more than 50 years of North Carolina history from the best seat in the house, highlighting the people and events that shaped the building as much as any architect's pencil. 130 pp. Englisch.

Some of them were railroad bridges and, although often viewed as charming relics of the past, all of these bridges were actually vital links in New Hampshire's transportation system. Covered bridges were used to cross most of New Hampshire's large rivers, including the Connecticut, Merrimack, Mascoma, Contoocook, Pemigewasset, and Ashuelot.New Hampshire Covered Bridges is a photographic study of the state's enclosed wooden spans that date from as far back as 1827. The book contains rare photographs of historic bridges that no longer exist, as well as pictures of many that still stand today. The images are accompanied by detailed information about the design and construction of covered bridges and the men who built them. Each bridge has its own life story. Some have defied floods and hurricanes and still stand; others have fallen victim to nature or arson or the demands of modern transportation. 130 pp. Englisch.

Woodstock provides a fascinating look at the community from the 1890s through the 1980s. With more than two hundred stunning images, it revisits the days when the center was simply a sleepy grass-covered village square. Shown are many buildings that no longer exist: the boarding homes, the icehouses, the bowling alley. The story captures the community as it passes through the arts-colony and music-festival years to become the busy tourist town it is today. 130 pp. Englisch.

The town was named after Rev. Charles Pitman, a well-known traveling Methodist minister who, in fact, had never been to Pitman. The borough evolved from a religious resort to a summer resort when Alcyon Park opened in 1892, but it retains its religious background. Even today, the Pitman Grove Auditorium is still holding camp meeting services on Sunday evenings during the summer months. Pitman includes vintage photographs documenting the growth of the borough from a tent city to its present hometown status. Included are scenes of a bygone era, such as those of the Alcyon Park area, early churches, the original downtown, and many buildings no longer in existence. Alcyon Park operated until the 1940s and Alcyon Track, one of the premier racetracks of its day, held events from 1895 until 1960. The Focer building, Dilks' Drug Store, and photographs of Pitman's fiftieth-anniversary celebration are also included. This history explores the growth of Pitman from its infancy to the early 1960s. 130 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Chestnut Hill, in northwest Philadelphia, is one of America's most beautiful urban villages thanks to the fusion of a magnificent physical setting, notable architecture, historic preservation, and careful planning. During the Colonial period, Chestnut Hill was a rough-hewn village of farmers and millers. After the railroad reached the area in 1854, Chestnut Hill's natural splendor and healthful atmosphere made it a popular spot for Philadelphia's wealthy. Soon, it was ringed by magnificent estates designed by Frank Furness, T.P. Chandler, and Horace Trumbauer. Living side-by-side with the wealthy were hardworking communities of Italian, Irish, and German immigrants. Chestnut Hill, a fascinating photographic record of Chestnut Hill's past, reveals some surprising secrets about this vibrant community. The current community center was once the site of a perpetual motion machine hoax that swindled nineteenth-century Philadelphians, and one local hotel provided liquor (and perhaps other illicit services) to Chestnut Hillers during Prohibition. The stunning photographs and riveting stories of Chestnut Hill include those of the anti-Catholic Know-Nothings, who threatened to halt the construction of Our Mother of Consolation Catholic Church in the 1850s, and of Richard Norris Williams II, who survived the sinking of the Titanic and went on to win the national tennis championship twice at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. 130 pp. Englisch.

Further, it is the best locale for enterprising capitalists and families seeking a safe haven.' This statement is as true today as when Broome County was established in 1806. With its sweeping hills and the uniting waters of the Susquehanna and Chenango Rivers, this county in the southern tier of New York continues to be a valley of opportunity.Broome County: 1850-1940 is the story of people of diverse heritage who have made this area their home. From the earliest days, inventors, entrepreneurs, artists, and a strong workforce have found Broome County to be a fertile terrain for achievement. Traditions have not been squandered on conformity but rather have been cherished and shared. Some well-known landmarks appear in this book; however, the majority of the images are previously unpublished. Included are rare interior views of early-twentieth-century factories and scenes of people at home and on the move-all silent witnesses to the 'good old days.' However, it was not until the beginning of the twentieth century that they began to arrive en masse, settling mostly in the large cities along the Atlantic seaboard. With its reputation for racial tolerance and its reservoir of employment opportunities, New York City became a principal beneficiary of this immigrant influx. Caribbean Americans in New York City: 1895-1975 begins with the immigrants' arrival in the Big Apple and continues to record the story of how they designed their new lives. As is usually the case with any large-scale immigrant settlement, there inevitably developed prejudices and discriminatory practices against Caribbean Americans. This brought to the forefront some of the most gifted and articulate orators, such as Richard B. Moore and Hubert Harrison, and journalists, such as W.A. Domingo and J.A. Rogers. In general, however, the city provided prosperity, a sense of community, and a better way of life, and the stunning images contained in this book also include those of success stories Bob Marley, Colin Powell, Hugh Mulzac-the first black captain of an American ship-and Geoffrey Holder, who appeared on television for years in popular 7-Up commercials. 130 pp. Englisch.

On June 26, 1799, after traveling two months through the wilderness, he and his small party landed in the Western Reserve. The story moves to establishing churches, schools, businesses, and the Western Reserve College, known as the 'Yale of the West.' The fiery John Brown and the Underground Railroad figure prominently in the history of Hudson. Hudson flourished until a series of misfortunes took their toll. Plans for the Clinton Air Line Railroad collapsed, the college relocated to Cleveland, the Fire of 1892 destroyed an entire block of businesses along Main Street, and the only bank in town suddenly closed its doors with people's life savings. Saddened by the deterioration of his hometown, wealthy coal magnate James W. Ellsworth outlined a plan to restore Hudson as a 'model town' and put his vast financial resources to work. Two years later, on May 18, 1929, after scores of visitors viewed more than 100,000 tulips along Holland's curbs, Tulip Time became an annual event. The 1930 Holland Evening Sentinel banner headline read: 'Tulip Reigns as Queen of City.' Throughout the decade, motion picture and radio personalities visited to promote the festival. The Holland Furnace Company, then the city's largest corporation, sponsored special radio programs that were broadcast nationwide. After World War II, Holland saw the festival grow into the nation's third largest annual event. Visitors have enjoyed parades that included street scrubbing, 'klompen' dancing, floats, and more than 50 bands.
