Hardcover first edition - First printing. Includes two novels translated from the Dutch. "The Last House in the World" (translated by Andr Lefevere) is an autobiographical novel by Beb Vuyk based on the author's life on the island of Buru in the Moluccas, in a house so isolated that it seemed at the edge of the world. She is particularly effective in describing the loneliness of frontier existence for women. The second novel "The Counselor" by H. J. Friedericy (translated by Hans Koning) was also written from personal experience. Friedericy entered the colonial service in the Dutch East Indies at the age of twenty-one, and held a number of administrative positions. Written in 1958, The Counselor recalls life on Celebes during the 1920s, when the Dutch were struggling to impose what they considered an enlightened colonial administration on the remnants of a feudal system they had nearly destroyed. A title in The Library of the Indies series, edited and with a preface to the series and introductions to each novel by E.M. Beekman. Notes, glossary, xi, 202 pp. Fine in very good dust jacket (a bit of fading and edgewear to the dj).
