Paperback. Condición: Good. 119 pages. rear cover rippedOpium & Gold is the story of the Chinese goldminers in New Zealand. Almost a forgotten segment of our past, it tells the story of racism and repression which is hi ghly relevant to contemporary New Zealand. Peter Butler writes of how the 'almond-eyed ones from The Flowery Land' arrived in New Zealand in search of gold, and of the violence they confronted. S ome achieved their goal of gold aplenty and returned to their hom eland, while others found the going tough and just managed to eke a living, turning to other pursuits like pakapoo, opium and chur ch. Opium & Gold is the story of their life in New Zealand, of th e influx of the 'yellow horde', of the crisis their arrival creat ed in Parliament and in the outback towns near the golddiggings. In a racy narrative filled with fact, Peter Butler has managed to blend social history, contemporary accounts and photographs in a n absorbing book; it is a real and important contribution to the understanding of New Zealand's interesting past.--Back cover.

Soft Covers. Condición: VG. Contemporary Art, Photos, Few Maps. Document Reproductions Ilustrador. 1st. In his coverage of the NZ Land Wars of the mid-1800s the author adopts a more benevolent view to the cause of the Maori people than many of the earlier accounts of that conflict. His research for the book included inspection of UK archives as well as in NZ. These revealed what he describes as a "sorry tale of broken promises and settler greed." He contends that British troops then in NZ were verging on a state of "virtual mutiny" because of their task of disposessing Taranaki and Waikato Maori of their land. As an author, Simpson was among several who, around this time, revised the causes and effects of the Land Wars. First edition of 1979, published by Alister Taylor, 256 pages including bibliography and index, liberally illustrated with b/w contemporary art, photos, drawings, few maps. This book is unconventionally bound with unattached card covers with colour art image to front, with French flaps with blurb etc, untitled cream card internal covers, text block is excellent, no inscriptions. Outer cover is VG with few light wear marks front vertical edge.

Hardcover. Condición: VG+. Estado de la sobrecubierta: VG+. Paintings/Art By Augustus Earle Ilustrador. 1st. Augustus Earle (1793-1838) was an artist who painted world-wide leaving a visual legacy from many countries in an age before photography. Such was the quality of his art that he exhibited at the Royal Acadamy in London when aged only 13. He was also a skilled writer and the book's introduction describes him as "probably the first professionally trained freelance travel writer to tour the world." His journeys took him to South America, islands in the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, India and Asia, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland, he also sailed on Charles Darwin's "Beagle" expedition. His versitility as an artist saw his art range from landscapes, to portrails, groups and events, to "My Dog Jemmy" and botanical drawings. While most works were watercolours he also used oils, pen, ink and wash. This book was commissioned by the National Library of Australia and is based on the Library's Rex Nan Kivell collection of the artist's works, of which 168 are used in the publication, 16 of them reproduced in colour. The selection includes a large number of early studies of native life in Australia and New Zealand, views of the environment and their natural history. Detail and descriptive notes for each image, covering all places he visited, are mainly taken from Earle's own observations and Jocelyn Hackforth-Jones compiled an introductory section outlining Earle's life and artistic styles, his topographical art, his connection with the Romantic Art Movement, his artistic portrayal of people and the originality factor in his art. The colour reproductions are placed in the introductory section with the b/w images running from page 45 tp page 146, a chronology, notes on paintings from other collections and bibliography taking to total pagination to 157 pages. First edition of 1980 published by Alister Taylor, orange hard covers with gilt spine titles are VG+, colour tone end-papers, a small book plate with former owner name name pasted to half-title verso, text block otherwise NF. Colour art DJ (paintings front and back) is VG+ with short vertical tear top front adjacent spine, chip at spine base and small fade area left edge front illustration. Book weight is 1kg unpacked and may require additional postage for international delivery.
