"Mes nouveaux torts" est en édition originale avec un frontispice de Marillier gravé par de Ghendt et une figure du même gravée par Gaucher. III del volume XVII (l'esemplare descritto in ICCU presenta tutte le tavv. legate a parte in un ulteriore volume). Sono inoltre mancanti le pp. LXV-LXXVIII e 1-2 del primo vol. e le pp. 357-384 dell'undicesimo vol. (probabilmente, in questo caso, si tratta di un mero errore di paginazione). Ottimo insieme nel complesso. Terza edizione italiana, "riveduta, e purgata d'ogni errore", del monumentale dizionario enciclopedico del Chambers, la "Cyclopaedia or Universal Dictionary of Arts and Sciences" (Londra, 1728), amplissima pubblicazione relativa a ogni ramo dello scibile umano e redatta secondo i principi ispiratori del pensiero illuminista. La vasta eco europea del lavoro del Chambers funse da ispirazione a Diderot e D'Alembert per concepire e condurre in porto la grandiosa impresa editoriale dell'"Encyclopédie" e a Samuel Johnson per forgiare lo stile del suo classico "Dictionary of the English Language". La presente terza edizione italiana si presenta completa del "Supplemento", opera di George Lewis; i primi undici volumi sono impressi da Bernardo Tarrigo, mentre, dal dodicesimo vol., i tipi editoriali sono quelli di Felice Repetto. Il Chambers (Kendal, 1680-Londra, 1740), poligrafo britannico, deve la sua fama presso la posterità eminentemente a questa vastissima pubblicazione, che gli valse anche l'ammissione come socio presso la londinese Royal Society. Die restlichen Bände 10-12 wurden posthum von seiner Frau herausgegeben. "Diese sehr geschätzte Ausgabe [.] wird bereits ziemlich selten und steigt täglich im Preise" (F.A. Ebert: Allgemeines bibliographisches Lexikon No. 15176). - Ein sehr seltenes Werk, in vollständiger Form am Markt auch in der Vergangenheit kaum zu finden. Im Auktionsmarkt war zuletzt 2010 nur ein Fragment mit den Bänden 1-6 auf der Auktion 55 bei Zisska für 2100 Euro verkauft worden sowie 2012 bei Bloomsbury in Meisterinbänden für 10.000 GBP. - Johann Jacob Reiske (geb. 25. Dezember 1716 in Zörbig; gest 14. August 1774 in Leipzig) war ein deutscher Gräzist, Arabist und Byzantinist. Obwohl er zu seiner Zeit kaum Anerkennung fand, gilt er als Begründer der arabischen Philologie als eigenständige Disziplin und als Pionier der arabischen Numismatik und Epigraphik. Er beförderte die arabische Philologie von einer theologischen Hilfswissenschaft zu einer eigenständigen Disziplin. Schon Herder bezeugt in den "Ideen zur Geschichte der Menschheit" seine Hochachtung vor den Leistungen und dem umfangreichen philologischen Werk von Reiske: Unser R. ist ein Märtyrer seines arabisch-griechischen Eifers geworden, sanft ruhe seine Asche! Knorr was a German Paleontologist, engraver, and art dealer who, in his lifetime, put together a handsome collection of drawings based on the Amateur cabinets and collections in Holland and Germany in the early 18th century (Muller, Houttyn, Schadeloock and others). After his death his work was published first in Nuremberg in French and Latin editions in 1764 and 1766, and then in Amsterdam in this Dutch edition of 1770-75. His artistry in drawing and capturing the forms and colors of these exotic shells is particularly fine. Nissen ZBI 2236. Catalogued by Kate Hunter.
