L'idea di Impero, espressa attraverso il simbolo di Astrea, è ricca di contraddizioni: vi è in essa un'aspirazione all'unità, pur nel riconoscimento del differenziarsi di varie entità statuali. Nelle società che sulle soglie dell'età moderna danno vita agli Stati nazionali, il tema imperiale si afferma per esprimere i bisogni di un mondo in formazione, desideroso di radicarsi in un passato dal quale minacciano di disgiungerlo le rivoluzioni che hanno trasformato la visione del mondo: dai nuovi rapporti fra l'uomo e Dio alla nuova concezione cosmologica affermata da Copernico e ripresa da Bruno.
