Decorated by publisher's devices on verso of title. Revised and corrected reprint of the first edition of 1938-41. The classic reference book on British birds until the much wider geographical coverage of The Birds of the Western Palearctic (1977-94). Harry Forbes Witherby (1873-1943), publisher in the family firm which specialised in bird books, and distinguished ornithologist, had earlier compiled a shorter Practical Handbook of British Birds, 1919-24.
