Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Carleton M. Winslow Ilustrador. Tan cloth with title in red on spine; 78pp; frontis portrait of Nichols in the Canadian Rockies at age 80. Dr. Nichols, an Episcopal minister, is the subject of this volume by Bishop Stevens. It is said about Nichols, in the Introduction, "One of the most remarkable facts about him was his ability to instil in others the same enthusiasm for Christ, His Gospel, and His Church, that glowed at the very core of his own personality. He always respected the personalities of others. If he argued and persuaded, it was because he believed a man had the right to be convinced before he decided, and must make up his own mind, not have it made up for him by someone else. The title of this book is well chosen: Uncle Harry was a mountaineer all his days. He lived on the heights, and he loved climbing them - intellectual heights as well as geological." Mt. Washington was a frequent "hike" for him. An interesting biography of this New England man of God. Former owner's signature and date on first free flyleaf. VG+ to Near Fine condition. Clean and bright throughout. [WAH-258].

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. No Jacket. Taylor, Harold A. Ilustrador. First Edition First Printing. A verbal & photographic chronicle of the Panama California Exposition, designed both as a World's Fair & as a way to highlight the beauty of the growing city of San Diego, the nearest Pacific port in the US to the newly opened Panama Canal. In 154 pages, with 68 duotone illustrations from photos + frontispiece tipped in, all by Harold A. Taylor, who was just making his way as a notable Western photographer. In his Introduction, architect Bertram Goodhue explains why some of the park's features were designed to be temporary ("essentially the fabric of a dream"), & should be razed after the fair, & some should become permanent fixtures in what endures today as Balboa Park. A FIRST EDITION, first printing, from 1916 (the fair had opened the previous year & would close on 1 Jan 1917), this hardcover 8vo is bound in a nubby tan cloth & lettered in gilt to front & spine. Condition is Fine: completely clean & bright, binding straight & strong, deckle-edged pages tanned, but completely supple. Old gift inscription dated 1921 to half title page in lovely script, along with recipient's bookplate. pages white with a hint of tanning to edges. Clipping featuring a letter to the Editor of the local paper (the San Diego Union) tucked in rear, darkening pages there. Exterior is crisp & clean with a hint of bumping to head of spineOur photos show the Exact book you will receive, never "stock" images of books we don't actually have on hand.
