Libro Original o primera edición
Hardcover. Condición: New. Estado de la sobrecubierta: New. First Edition Thus. Cover is green with gold lettering on the spine. Illustrated with 42 engravings from the 1743 edition. Introduction by William Steinkraus; technical commentary by E. Schmit-Jensen. Green endpapers. Pages are clean and tight; this is a NEW book. The 42 plates are at the back of the book, and followed by 'a Dictionary explaining the Technical Terms that belong to the Stud, Stable, Manage, and Farriery; or whatever relates to Horses", and an index. Cavendish [1593-1676] was one the acknowledged European riding masters of the 17th century. This book was originally published in French, in Antwerp, in 1658, while he was in exile from Commonwealth England. The book is dedicated to "His Grace Charles, Duke of Richmond, Lenox and Aubigny, Master of the Horse to His Majesty, etc." This Charles was the Prince of Wales, later Charles II, himself a renowned a horseman, and one of the primary founders of thoroughbred breeding in England, helping to make Newmarket the center of English racing. Cavendish' emphasis on systematic and humane training was revolutionary for its era and his teaching still exerts a strong influence several centuries later. He is credited with developing the lateral move, the shoulder-in, to help train the horse to step under his body more with his inside hind leg, leading to greater collection. An absolute must for any horse book collection, with superb b/w engravings. Dressage today is also about extension, as well as collection, and the Duke, as a man of his time, focused on how to achieve the greatest collection possible for his horse. But his thoughts on horse training and movement hold as true today as they did 350 years ago. ; A Trafalgar Square Classic Series; B&W Illustrations; 6 1/4 x 9 1/2; 142+ pages.
