A Comparison of Time of The Butcherbird and The Stone CountryAbstractIn South African literature, more than anywhere else, the land is at the root of everything. The upheaval caused by apartheid and the social dynamics of relationships both within and across the colour line are instigated by the land. Alex La Guma as a realist shows how the South African 'condition' is precipitated by the land. The paper looks at how the landscape holds the society hostage whether one is free or behind bars. The argument is that writers and critics of South African literature cannot fully understand the spectrum of race relations if they overlook the role of the landscape. My analysis of Alex La Guma's texts shows how both whites and blacks mould their identity on the landscape and how their philosophy on life and relationship with one another is buttressed by what it means to have access to this natural resource. 24 pp. Englisch.

The essay argues that the trickster is androgynous and it is this concept that makes the trickster able to outwit the larger and more powerful creatures in the tales. As such, the essay makes a point that the trickster's success at outwitting animals in folklore has nothing to do with it being male! 16 pp. Englisch.

This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Scientific Essay from the year 2016 in the subject Literature - Africa, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: The aim of this article is two-fold. It will analyse how Ogun principles in The Interpreters have been compromised and discarded by individuals transformed by an alien culture. The article will also describe and evaluate the ways in which the Ogun presence manifests itself in a society that is reluctant to look at the past in order to forge a path of self-discovery. In the postmodern age, the concept of identity and purpose calls for a psychological weaning from imported cultures with their hegemonic footprints. The absorption of an alien culture is at times not selectively done by members of these African societies. In effect, they find themselves technologically propelled into an environment that transforms them from the inside and spreads like a cancer. 20 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Essay from the year 2017 in the subject Literature - Africa, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: The African continent is synonymous with war and women are caught up in it in the perpetual role of the victim. African literature in the pre colonial and colonial period has tended to be very intransigent in its portrayal of females in times of conflict. The African writer has created a fragmented female. This character is often bartered, manipulated or presented as lovesick in conflict situations creating a flawed and destructive image of the African woman. I argue that writers of African literature exposing the violent conflict of colonialism and liberation have a pessimistic outlook on the role of women in war which has hindered the empowerment of women. I will use Psychoanalysis and its concept on the life and death instincts to account for why sex and identity dominates the portrayal of women in pre-colonial and colonial literature. African writers have created a situation where conflict necessitates a sexual definition of the female character. Women thus possess a paradoxical identity of being sensual and consuming of the male phallus which ultimately breaks and consumes them. The conflict resolution is such that sex seems to logically place and displace ideas of sexuality and its impact on the female character. 16 pp. Englisch.

Taschenbuch. Condición: Neu. This item is printed on demand - it takes 3-4 days longer - Neuware -Scientific Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Literature - Africa, University of Botswana, language: English, abstract: This study intends to compare the portrayal of conflict in Ferdinand Oyono's 'Houseboy' and Nadine Gordimer's 'July's People'. Specifically, it looks at how the black servant is forced to balance the loyalty he has for the white employer and for his African roots. The analysis of 'Houseboy' will focus on how conflict is represented between whites and blacks, how it can satirically have a positive influence on others and lastly, how conflict among the blacks can be very destructive. 'Houseboy' shows how conflict can be prompted by stereotypes; how it can be a shield from other pressing concerns and even how conflict itself can provide an outlet for humour. The analysis of 'July's People' will on the other hand focus on how people can live together under pretences that they are at peace with one another when in actual fact they are not; how the black servant can be in conflict with people of other races or their traditions as well as how that servant can be in conflict with fate or destiny. In conclusion it will be shown how 'Houseboy' is more explicit in portraying conflict than 'July's People' due to the events that happened in the two texts. An argument can be made therefore if conflict experienced by black servants during the colonial period was more in the open as opposed to that of apartheid South Africa. 28 pp. Englisch.
