Black and white engravings throughout Ilustrador. First Nicolas edition. A handsome set of the large paper first Nicolas edition of Walton, acclaimed as the finest "Angler" ever published. Sir Harris Nicolas not only secured excellent illustrators and an outstanding publisher for his edition, he also brilliantly edited and annotated the text, which is that of the 1676 fifth edition. The fifth edition was the first edition of Cotton, the first issue combining Walton and Cotton, and the last edition of "Angler" to be revised by Walton himself. Sir Nicolas was the first to divide the text into the natural days of the narrative, and he also provides many useful notes and comments, along with new material on Walton and Cotton. The illustrations are from original drawings and paintings by Thomas Stothard (scenes) and James Inskipp (fishes and portraits). The frontispiece portrait of Walton is engraved from the original painting by Jacob Huysmans. A desirable edition of this classic, and an impressive addition to the angler's library. Ref. HORNE 43; HAND W102. Dark green leather spines and fore corners with marbled paper sides, gilt ruled boards, marbled endpapers, and all edges of textblocks gilt. Spines are titled and ornamented in gilt with five raised bands. Mild rubs to leather along joints, some light rubs to board edges, and some faint scattered foxing inside. Front endpaper of volume I has separation along hinge but still sound. Very good overall. 3/4 leather and marbled boards. Quartos. ccxii, 129 and [130]-436, [32] pages.

Hardcover. Condición: Fine. 2nd Edition. Walton, Izaak, with Charles Cotton. The Complete Angler or the Contemplative Man s Recreation Edited by Sir Harris Nicolas. London: Nattali and Bond, 1860. Second Nicolas Edition. 2 volumes, royal 8vo. Presented in modern half red Moroccan leather and cloth bindings with raised bands, gilt titles, tooling, and stamps to the spine. Illustrated throughout. Presented is a 1860 printing of Izaak Walton and Charles Cotton s famous treatise on fishing, The Complete Angler, or the Contemplative Man s Recreation. Published by Nattali and Bond in London, this beautifully bound two volume set was the second edition to be edited by Sir Harris Nicolas. The volumes are beautifully bound in modern half red Moroccan leather boards with gilt titles and illustrated throughout with engravings from 27 of the most prominent artists of the time. The Complete Angler was first published in 1653 by Richard Marriot of St Dunstan-in-the-West out of London, UK. Izaak Walton continued to add to the original book for a quarter of a century. A significantly enlarged edition appeared in 1655, and the last edition supervised by Walton, published in 1676, included additional fly-fishing material written by his friend Charles Cotton. The 1676 edition has been among the most often reprinted books in English literature. The Compleat Angler remains one of the most important environmental books in history. Through the characters of Auceps the fowler, Venator the hunter, and Piscator the fisherman, Walton imparted a view of the natural world that was revolutionary at the time. Walton understood that a healthy environment was essential to the outdoor recreation that he loved, and used the story of Piscator and the novice fisherman Venator to show how a healthy environment supports the art of angling. Though intended in part as a practical guide for fishermen, the lasting influence of The Compleat Angler stems from its qualities as a work of literature: it is arguably the best long prose-pastoral in English. The discourse between Piscator and Venator as Piscator teaches Venator how to bait a hook, catch varied species of freshwater fish, and cook them, is enriched with songs and poems, folklore, recipes, anecdotes, moral meditations, quotes from the Bible and from classic literature, and lore about fishing and waterways. Izaak Walton's classic celebration of the joys of fishing has captivated anglers and nature lovers with its timeless advice and instruction. Edited by Sir Harris Nicolas, with additions of memoirs of Walton s life and stunning 19th century illustrations, this printing of The Compleat Angler is made even more collectible and would be the perfect addition to any sportsman s library. CONDITION: Very good condition. 2 volumes, Royal 8vo. In modern half red Moroccan leather and cloth bindings, with raised bands, gilt titles, tooling, and stamps to the spine. Numerous engraved plates throughout. Paper is healthy, with only light toning and light spotting. Coigney 78. Dimensions for Volume 1: 10 3/8" H x 7 5/8" W x 1 7/8" D.
