Jordan, Jr. -- * Foreword by Andrew Billingsley -- * Introduction ------ * PART I: STRONG KINSHIP BONDS: 1.1) Absorption of Individuals, Minors and the Elderly -- 1.2) Absorption of Families -- 1.3) Informal Adoption ------ * PART II: STRONG WORK ORIENTATION: 2.1) Attitudes Toward Work -- 2.2) Double Earners ------ * PART III: ADAPTABILITY OF FAMILY ROLES: 3.1) Equalitarian Family Patterns -- 3.2) One Parent Families -- 3.3) Desertion -- 3.4) Suicide Rates ------ * PART III: HIGH ACHIEVEMENT ORIENTATION ------ * PART III: RELIGIOUS ORIENTATION ------ * PART III: SUMMARY ------ * Tables -- * Footnotes -- * Bibliography . . . . . . . This report identifies and analyzes five strengths of black families: adaptability roles, strong kinship bonds, strong work orientation, strong religious orientation, and achievement orientation. These five characteristics have been functional for the survival, advancement, and stability of black families. Most discussions of black families tend to focus on indicators of instability and weakness. This preoccupation with pathology in most research on black families has obscured some fruitful avenues of investigation. It is here contended that examining the strengths of black families can contribute as much towards understanding and ameliorating social problems as examining their weaknesses. If, as most scholars agree, there is a need to strengthen black families, then a first-order priority should be the identification of presently-existing strengths and resources. The National Urban League recognized this need three years ago when it issued a position statement on black families based on the work of Dr. Andrew Billingsley. Among the major findings from this report is that, contrary to the widespread belief in a "matriarchy" among blacks, most black families, whether low-income or not, are characterized by an equalitarian pattern in which neither spouse dominates, but shares decision-making and the performance of expected tasks.

Illustrated with a section of black-and-white photographic plates and double page map. "Anyone seeking to understand the nature of American war fighting in the twenty-first century, how it is both like and utterly unlike that of any previous one, needs to understand Petraeus, his remarkable career, his thinking, and his character. All In is an excelent place to start. It is fascinating and insightful, informed by remarkable access to the man both on and off the battlefield." - Mark Bowden, author of Black Hawk Down. "General David Petraeus is the most transformative leader the American military has seen since the generation of Marshall. In All In, military expert Paula Broadwell examines Petraeus's career, his intellectual development as a military officer, and his impact on the U.S. military. Afforded extensive access by General Petraeus, his mentors, his subordinates, and his longtime friends, Broadwell embedded with the general, his headquarters staff, and his soldiers on the front lines of fighting and at the strategic command in Afghanistan to chronicle the experiences of this American general as they were brought to bear in the terrible crucible of war. All In draws on hundreds of hours of exclusive interviews with Petraeus and his top officers and soldiers to tell the inside story of this commander's development and leadership in war from every vantage point. When Petraeus asumed command in Afghanistan in July 2010, the conflict looked as bleak as at any moment in America's nine years on the ground there. Petraeus's defining idea - counterinsurgency - was immediately put to its most difficult test: The hard lessons learned during the surge in Iraq were to be applied in a radically different theater. All In examines the impact in Afghanistan of new counterinsurgency and counterterrorism strategies through the commands of several Petraeus proteges, with special emphasis on those who, like Petraeus, have served with the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault). To inform this unprecedented reporting of Petraeus's command in Afghanistan, Broadwell examines his evolution as a soldier from his education at West Point in the wake of Vietnam to his earlier service in Central America, Haiti, Kuwait, Bosnia, and Iraq. All In also documents the general's role in the war in Washington, going behind the scenes in Congress, the Pentagon, and the White House of negotiations during policy reviews of the war in Afghanistan. Broadwell ultimately appraises Petraeus's impact on the entire U.S. military: Thanks to this man's influence, the military is better prepared to fight using a comprehensive blend of civil-military activities. As America surveys a decade of untraditional warfare, this much is clear: The career of General David Petraeus profoundly shaped our military and left an indelible mark on its rising leaders." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.
