Libro
Hardcover. Condición: Near Fine. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Near Fine. 439 pp., viii. "Printed in Great Britain". Originally published in The World's Classics edition in 1934; reprinted in 1946, 1950, 1956, and (This copy) 1959; The World's Classics #420. Following the Introduction by Aylmer Maude, Contents divided into these stories: [1] "Billiard Marker's Notes" (published January, 1855); [2] "The Snow Storm" (March, 1856); [3] "Two Hussars" (May, 1856); [4] "A Landlord's Morning" (Part of an unfinished novel, A Russian Landlord; December 1856); [5] "Lucerne" (1857); [6] "Albert" (August 1858); [7] "Three Deaths" (January 1859); (8) "Polikushka" (February, 1863); [9] "Strider: The Story of a Horse" (Dated 1861, when it was written but not completed; 1866). Gray and white dustwrapper not price-clipped (U.K. Price "8s. 6d. net" remains at lower left inside dw front panel, while lower right part of panel is clipped); Illustration of horse-drawn sleigh in action across middle front cover; gray color on spine looks slightly darker than gray of covers, with 1/2" strip down front cover left edge at gutter age-toned (ALL lettering on spine sharp and distinct, eminently readable); rear cover list of Tolstoy's publications in The World's Classics Series evinces three check marks opposite three titles which previous owner evidently had in her collection; hint of dw tip wear at cover corners and thin line of wear across each dw spine end. Dark blue cloth with brilliant gilt lettering on spine; thin lines of wear across spine ends, corresponding with thin lines of dw wear at those locations, but LESS than on dw; the 3-pp Introduction by Aylmer Maude is marred by the following: first page, a short vertical blue ink line in the margin opposite the first paragraph, with short ink underlines on 2 lines of that paragraph, and 1 check mark in the margin; second page, 3 check marks in the margin; third page 2 check marks in margin of page: describes worse than it is but there you have it. The remainder of the book is entirely free of marks. Strong binding (NO cracks); Sharp corners (NO bumps or curls); NO remainder marks. Previous owner name and location at top right ffep, that of "Anne Meyer / Beirut, 1967". From The Boston Globe: "MEYER, Anne Avantaggio Died peacefully in Newburyport, Massachusetts on January 5, 2020 at the age of 93. Born in Newton, Massachusetts, the daughter of Frank O. and Mary F. (Sisto) Avantaggio. Educated in Newton public schools, Radcliffe College, and the Harvard School of Education. Longtime resident of Cambridge, she also lived in Beirut, Lebanon, Tangier, Morocco, and London, England. Summer resident of Jefferson, Maine. A lifelong learner and educator, she taught diverse subjects and grade levels at the American Community School of Beirut and schools in Massachusetts. Active fund-raiser and community volunteer with interests in conservation and public parks, notably the Boston Natural Areas Fund and River Bend Park, Cambridge. Her passions included music, her gardens, archaeology, and the quest for Middle East peace." Solid copy. The way to read a Classic anthology of Tolstoy's Short Stories, in a Collectible copy more than 50 years-old.
