Die nun vorliegende Diskursgeschichte der Weimarer Republik zeichnet in Form einer narrativen Sprachgeschichtsdarstellung die äußerst umstrittenen, zum Teil in der Bundesrepublik wiederbelebten oder weitergeführten gesellschaftspolitischen Diskurse dieser Zeit nach: In Band 1 den Streit um die Reichsflagge und das politische System, den wehr- und rüstungspolitischen Diskurs, die Debatten um die Wirtschafts- und Sozialpolitik, die Europapolitik und die Stellung der Frau; in Band 2 die Kontroversen über Antisemitismus, Abtreibung, Eherecht und Homosexualität sowie über Zensur und Schulform. Zu den verblüffenden Ergebnissen der Studie gehört unter anderem, dass nicht etwa die Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten zur Unterdrückung der Debattenkultur führte: Viele der damals umstrittenen Diskurse wurden bereits in den Jahren der Weltwirtschaftskrise abgebrochen. The Weimar Republic has been seen in linguistic terms purely as a preliminary phase of the language of National Socialism rather than as a separate period, important in itself for the history of the language. Yet it was a period of unusual socio-political and linguistic upheaval for Germany. This history of discourse in the Weimar Republic outlines in narrative form the extremely contentious socio-political discourses of the time, which were in part resurrected or continued in the post-war Federal Republic: in volume 1 disputes about the national flag and the political system, the discourse of armament and defence policy, the debates about economic and social policy, European policy and the place of women; in volume 2 the controversies over anti-Semitism, abortion, marriage law and homosexuality as well as censorship and types of schooling. Among the studies surprising findings is the fact that it was not only the Nazi seizure of power that led to the suppression of debate: many of the discourses contested at the time had already been broken off during the years of the international economic crisis.
