Catalog issued in connection with the exhibition held Dec. 11, 1996-Mar. 4, 1997 at the Berkeley Art Museum. Paper covers, 119 pages. In very good condition. Illustrated paper covers with French flaps have light bumping and creasing to edges and corners and light overall scuffing with a bit of the color scuffed off along the edges. Binding tight. Pages clean and unmarked. NOT Ex-Library. NO remainder marks. Black and white illustrations. Contents include: Director's Foreword; Preface; Acknowledgments; Lenders to the Exhibition; Masks and Meanings in Tiepolo's Venice by James Christen Steward; The Private Art of the Tiepolos by George Knox; Catalogue; Select Bibliography. [From front flap] he Mask of Venice looks at the mask, both literal and figurative, as a way of approaching the rich artistic production of 18th-century Venice. Timed to coincide with the 300th anniversary of the birth of Giambattista Tiepolo, the book explores the visual representation of masking as a metaphor for disguise and freedom in the otherwise rigidly controlled society of the time. Moving from images of masking in Venetian society, to the derivation of the mask from the commedia dell'arte, to the use of theatrical devices both to hide and reveal character in the visual arts, The Mask of Venice studies the social world as well as the world of artistic imagination. This trajectory through the liberation of the mask ultimately allows us to unmask, at least in part, the often mysterious work of Tiepolo himself.

Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (corners lightly bumped, else Fine). From the publisher: "It was not until the age of 47 that Ernestine Ruben discovered the art of making photographs. Her rise on the international horizon has been hailed as meteoric, but like most seemingly instant artistic careers, hers seasoned over a long period, combining life-long interests in sculpture, dance, architecture, and the history of art. Focus, structure, and dimensionality have been key points within the making of Ruben's images, whether the subject matter is the artist's extraordinary work with the sculpture of Auguste Rodin in Paris, the Jewish Cemetery in Prague, or the ancient ruins of Petra. Ernestine Ruben's photographs and installations have been widely published, collected, and exhibited internationally.".
