Mass market paperback. Condición: Fair. vii, [1], 216 pages. Mass market paperback. Illustrations. Slightly cocked. Some page browning. Covers has some wear and soiling. Ink writing on first page. William Henry Stevenson (1 June 1924 - 26 November 2013) was a British-born Canadian author and journalist. His 1976 book A Man Called Intrepid was about William Stephenson (no relation) and was a best-seller. It was made into a 1979 mini-series starring David Niven. Stevenson followed it in 1983 with another book, Intrepid's Last Case. He published his autobiography in 2012. In 1976 Stevenson released the book, 90 Minutes at Entebbe. It was about Operation Entebbe, an operation where Israeli commandos landed at night at Entebbe Airport in Uganda and succeeded in rescuing the passengers of an airliner hi-jacked by Palestinian militants, while incurring very few casualties. Stevenson's "instant book" was written, edited, printed and available for sale within weeks of the event it described. The first full inside story of Operation Thunderbolt, the spectacular Israeli strike against terrorism that rescued 103 hostages from a hijacked jetliner. On June 27, 1976, Air France Flight 139 was hijacked by terrorists and flown to Entebbe Airport in Uganda. In the following agonizing days, Israeli passengers were singled out and held hostage. A week later on July 4, one hundred Israeli commandos raced 2,500 miles from Israel to Entebbe, landed in the middle of the night, and in a heart-stopping mission that lasted ninety minutes, killed all guerillas and freed 103 hostages. Stevenson provides a fast-paced hour-by-hour narration from the hijacking to the final ninety-minute mission. In addition to discussing the incredible rescue itself, Stevenson also covers the political backdrop behind the hijacking, especially Ugandan President Idi Amin s support for the hijackers, which marked one of the first times a leader of a nation had backed terrorist activities.

SYNOPSIS: A SMALL BAND OF BRAVE MEN It was the most triumphant rescue of modern times, a spectacular end to a terrifying odyssey. For years Arab terrorists had shocked the world with skyjackings and wanton murder of innocents. Then guerrillas hijacked an Air France jetliner, flew the passengers to Uganda and, during a week of agony, bargained for lives. Only hours before the deadline, Israeli commandos in Hercules prop-jets raced over 2500 miles from Israel to Entebbe airport, and in a blaze of gunfire, freed 103 hostages. "The mission in Uganda, in one short hour, strengthened the backbone of the Jewish people and of the whole free world. This was a time when the fate of a nation was determined in one hour by a small band of brave men." - Israeli Defense Minister Shimon Peres. A LEGEND IS BORN Here is the full story of a rescue mission in which a small nation staked its pride and honor to save the lives of its sons and daughters. 16 pages of on-the-scene photographs. William Stevenson, internationally renowned journalist and war correspondent, is the bestselling author of A Man Called Intrepid. He first learned about terrorist methods in French Indochina and later in Kenya during the bloody Mau Mau wars. His experience in operational intelligence began during the second World War when he was a Royal Navy pilot. Later, he was attached to British Security Coordination chief, Sir William Stephenson, a man called Intrepid. Bill Stevenson's long association with Israel began immediately after World War II when former members of the Intrepid network helped to establish the state of Israel. Just prior to the Six Day War in 1967, Stevenson knew that fighting was about to break out. Shortly after that war he wrote the Bantam book: Strike Zion. In 1970 with cooperation of the IAF, Stevenson wrote Zanek!: A Chronicle of the Israeli Air Force. Now, after two intensive weeks of journalistic investigation in Israel, Bill Stevenson has written the first complete, inside story of the rescue mission in Uganda: 90 Minutes at Entebbe. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.
