48pp. plus two plates. 12mo. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers soiled, backstrip perished. First plate affixed to verso of front wrapper. First seventeen pages quite stained and foxed. Contemporary inscription on rear free endpaper dated at Concord, New Hampshire in 1814. Good. Designated the "third edition, improved" on the titlepage and the wrapper. Sabin notes a second edition of 1808, but not a first edition. A comprehensive military manual, based on Steuben's principles, apparently for the use of the Massachusetts militia. The tenets in this manual would have guided American forces during the War of 1812. Included are descriptions of duties for officers, privates, ensigns, and sergeants. The plates show formations for marching. Scarce on the market. SHAW & SHOEMAKER 20735. SABIN 91460.

Hardcover. Condición: Good. [Von Steuben's Revolutionary War Manual on Drill was written at George Washington's urging. It remained an important guide for the American military through the War of 1812] Rebound in early 20th century 1/2 cloth over marbled boards. Hardcover. Good binding and cover. Foxing. 48 p. ; 22 cm. (8vo). Evans, 26358. ESTC W21724. Prepared by Friedrich von Steuben in 1779 as inspector general of the Continental Army; adopted nationally by the Uniform Militia Act of 1792. 'Washington asked Steuben to serve temporarily as inspector general and to begin his duties by instructing the soldiers in the long-neglected subjects of discipline and drill. To the amazement of the Americans, who were unaccustomed to officers acting as drillmasters, Steuben initially formed a model company, which he personally instructed with the aid of a translator. By April, Steuben had acquired four assistant inspectors and had extended drill instruction to the whole army. Lacking adequate drill manuals, Steuben wrote daily lessons in which he greatly simplified and softened Prussian methods to fit the immediate needs and free-spirited ways of the American soldiers . The transformation that Steuben wrought in the training of the Continental army greatly impressed Washington and other observers. In May 1778 Congress, acting at Washington's recommendation, officially appointed Steuben inspector general of the army with the rank and pay of major general.' (ANB online).

STEUBEN, Friedrich Wilhelm Ludolf Gerhard, Augustin, Baron de. Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States. Part I [all published]. Hartford: Nathaniel Patten, [1783]. 12mo (6 x 3 3/4 inches). 108pp. 8 engraved folding plates. Rebound in period-style calf, gilt-ruled spine. Light scattered foxing and toning, Plate I has tear on one fold, else very good. Evans 18267. Sabin 91395; Howes S-951, "aa." Trumbull, J.H. Connecticut, 1416. ESTC W22971. The principal military manual of the American Revolution. The German-born Steuben, well trained in the highly disciplined military system developed under Frederick the Great, served as inspector general of the Continental Army. In this capacity, he wrote his Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States on orders from the Continental Congress. First published in 1779, the work became the standard text for the Continental Army and the United States Army into the early 19th century. Fifty editions, abridgements, extracts, and adaptations were printed before 1800. Steuben's contribution to American independence cannot be underestimated. "He was unrivaled among the citizens of the new nation as an expert on military affairs. His introduction of European military concepts to the Continental army marks the beginning of a truly professional military tradition in the United States" (ANB). Rarely found with the folding plates intact and in good condition, as in the present example.
