First edition. Engraved frontispiece and two plates, one of which is folding. 8vo. Original blue paper wrappers, typographically printed with a woodcut vignette of the Royal arms, ads to verso of front and recto verso of rear wrapper. Stab stitched, wrappers perished at spine with many chips and a little loss along lower edge, uncut. 56, 4ads, London, Alex Hogg, An unsophisticated copy of the first issue of The New London Magazine, in which Captain James Cook's third and final voyage was serialised over the following eighteen months. The first part appears here, from pp.17-24. A Voyage to the Pacific Ocean, undertaken by the Command of his Majesty, for making Discoveries in the Northern Hemisphere. was the official narrative of Cook's last voyage, and was published in quarto in 1784. Most Londoners of modest means would have struggled to afford the cost of such a large and lavish publication, so this serialisation of the voyage would have made the account of Cook and his fellow captains available to a much wider audience. The actual text is a reproduction of George William Anderson's abridgement, released in the same year as the official narrative, and published also by Alex Hogg (as is the present periodical). That was released as a folio in eighty separate parts. Other contents includes Memoirs of William Pitt and James Fox, accounts of curious people or unusual customs including an ?account of the courtship and marriages of the Natives of Kamtschatka . by a person who has resided among them?, book reviews, poetry and parliamentary proceedings. One of the plates is a folding cartoon of ?Yorick at Dover, going to embark to France?.

Leather. Condición: Very Good. Not Stated Ilustrador. First edition. The complete two volume first edition of this detailed history of the military involvement of the French and British armies in Egypt, illustrated with folding plates and a folding map. Credited both to 'Several Gentlemen, members of the Literary and Philosophical Society in Newcastle upon Tyne', and one of their members, Newcastle based minister of the Secession Church John Baillie, this is a fascinating and detailed account of Napoleon's landing in Egypt and the restoration of the Ottoman powers.Collated, illustrated with a portrait frontispiece, folding map and folding engraved plate to volume I, and a further folding engraved plate in volume II. Collation varies but lacking one folding map compared to some copies. With the contemporary owner's inscription of John Hutchinson to the head of volume II title page.Featuring also an 'ample description of the moral and physical state of the country, with remarks on its political importance', and the history of Egypt prior to the French invasion, this is a wonderful insight into the attitudes of early nineteenth century historians towards Egypt. In half calf bindings with marbled paper covered boards. Rebacked, with original boards restored, and endpapers renewed. Rubbing to boards. Internally, firmly bound. Contemporary inscription to head of volume II title page. Pages age toned due to paper type, with significant spotting to first and last few leaves of each volume, and the odd further spot throughout. Very Good. book.
