Decorative Cloth. Condición: Very Good. Later Printing. Original mustard/black cloth with decorative front board and spine. Boards are slightly soiled, showing light wear at corners and top/bottom of spine, internally lightly age toned, else a very good copy of a title usually found in poor condition. The author served as the field secretary of the US Christian Commission and provides one of the few works that not only recorded the work of the commision, but also many anecdotes collected dluring the Civil War for which this is the only source.

An interesting and important source for the work of the Christian Commission, which provided both religious support and social services to the Union troops. Edward Parmalee Smith (1827-1876) was Field Secretary to the Commission. Somewhat scarce - only six institutional copies held. Originally published in 1868, this is a Very Good copy of the First Edition done by Hubbard. 512 pages, indexed. Clean and supple text. A nice example of Victorian decorative binding, gray cloth with embossing in black and gold. Small tear to FFEP, and the upper part of the spine has been rubbed to rob it of some of its color. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus. Decorative Cloth. Very Good/No Jacket.
