2.4 inches (62mm) diameter. v.g. A heavy copper medal by A.J. Stothard, medallist to George IV, after a bust by Sir Francis Leggatt Chantrey. With the profile portrait of a mature Sir Walter Scott, facing right. On the obverse, a full-length female figure leaning on a column and holding a ribbon inscribed 'TO GREAT MEN'. Stothard created several medallic portraits for Samuel Parker's 'Great Men' series, including George Canning, James Watt, and the Duke of York. His works were considered among the best of the form; indeed Scott wrote a letter to Parker commenting that he couldn't be a judge of his own portrait, though his family thought it 'very like'.
