Hardcover. Condición: Very Good. Estado de la sobrecubierta: Very Good. Picasso (Dustwrapper drawing) Ilustrador. First UK Edition. First impression of the first UK edition and first English translation, published in 1962. The book was originally published in Paris, France as "Djamila Boupacha" by Librairie Gallimard earlier in 1962. Translated from the French by Peter Green. With a 13 page Introduction by Simone de Beauvoir. ***Very good in black cloth-covered boards, with gilt titles to the spine. The boards are clean and bright, with just a little rubbing at the edges. Head and tail of spine slightly creased. Corners sharp. Top edge of page block stained red by the publisher - still nice and clean and unfaded. Binding square with no reading lean. Spine tight. Internally near fine with no inscriptions or annotations. No foxing. Pages clean. ***In a very good dustwrapper, with line drawing portrait of Djamila Boupacha by Pablo Picasso. The dustwrapper is largely complete, but has been price-clipped by the publisher, showing the new publisher's printed price of 25s net. The edges of the dustwrapper are creased and rubbed, with small edge nicks. Some creasing and rubbing to head and tail of spine, and quite a lot of creasing at the top of the front panel. Spine of dustwrapper a bit patchy and discoloured. ***223mm x 147mm. 251 pages. ***'Djamila Boupacha (born 9 February 1938 in Bologhine, a suburb of Algiers) is a former militant from the Algerian National Liberation Front. She was arrested in 1960 for attempting to bomb a cafe in Algiers. Her confession, which was obtained by means of torture and rape, and her subsequent trial affected French public opinion about the methods used by the French army in Algeria after publicity by Simone de Beauvoir and Gisèle Halimi. Boupacha was sentenced to death on June 29, 1961, but was given amnesty under the Evian Accords and later freed on 21 April 1962. Working with French Tunisian lawyer Gisèle Halimi, Boupacha brought her torture case to trial, causing a scandal in France and Algeria and gaining wide public attention. Halimi and Simone de Beauvoir wrote a book entitled "Djamila Boupacha", with the subtitle "The Story of the Torture of a Young Algerian Girl which Shocked Liberal French Opinion" as part of a broader plan to "rally public opinion and to put the government on trial for violating Article 344 of the French Penal Code." Throughout the trial, Boupacha also gained the support of prominent artists and intellectuals such as Henri Alleg, André Philip, and Pablo Picasso.' ***'Gisèle Halimi (27 July 1927 - 28 July 2020) was a Tunisian-French lawyer, politician, essayist and feminist activist. In 1948, Halimi qualified as a lawyer and, after eight years at the Tunis bar, moved to practise at the Paris bar in 1956. She acted as a counsel for the Algerian National Liberation Front, most notably for the activist Djamila Boupacha in 1960, who had been raped and tortured by French soldiers, and wrote a book in 1961 (with an introduction by Simone de Beauvoir) to plead her case. She also defended Basque individuals accused of crimes committed during the conflict in Basque Country, and was counsel in many cases related to women's issues, such as the 1972 Bobigny abortion trial (of a 17-year-old accused of procuring an abortion after having been raped), which attracted national attention. In 1967, she chaired the Russell Tribunal, which was initiated by Bertrand Russell and Jean-Paul Sartre to investigate and evaluate American military action in Vietnam.' (Wiki) ***First impression of the true first UK edition, and first edition in English. An uncommon Simone de Beauvoir title, with the additional interest of the Picasso illustration. ***For all our books, postage is charged at cost, allowing for packaging: any shipping rates indicated on ABE are an average only: we will reduce the P & P charge where appropriate - please contact us for postal rates for heavier books and sets etc.
