Hardcover. Condición: USED_FINE. 1st Edition. San Francisco: The Sierra Club, 1950. Fine grade First Edition set of this hardbound reproduction of the oldest softcover volumes (1893 through 1905) of the Sierra Club Bulletin; hence, self-named "Second Printing" of the softcover issues, which are of course themselves the first printing. Five Volumes, coverage as named in scans (which see). Large octavo, maroon ribbed cloth boards, gilt spine imprinting. Volume I: [12] + 341 pp.+ [10], photographs in separated insert sections; Volume II: [12] + 328 pp. + [8], photographs in separated insert sections; Volume III: [8] + 339 pp. + [10], photographs in separated insert sections; Volume IV: [16] + 324 pp. + [10], photographs in separated insert sections; Volume V: [14] + 328 + [2]. a Fine, handsome set, with only several trace micro-imperfections at places in bindings; essentially flawless, and as received originally. There is unlikely to be a better set anywhere.David Brower, Chairman of the Sierra Club Editorial Board, describes, in his "Preface to the Second Printing", the reasons and process behind this rare set: "The five volumes of the Sierra Club Bulletin completed before 1906 have long been out of print and exceedingly difficult to obtain; the type, the plates, manuscripts and photographs, the overrun, and many individuals' files were destroyed in the San Francisco earthquake and fire. Spurred on, perhaps, by Ronald Clark's pleasant description of the Bulletin in The Splendid Hills, where he speaks of it as "that model of all mountain periodicals," the Sierra Club has brought the early volumes back into print, thus enabling important libraries, whether individual or institutional, to complete their files of turn-of-the-century description of exploration and conservation in the Sierra Nevada. Reproduction of these volumes is by photo-offset, and the text remains exactly as it was. The trim size of the first two numbers has been increased so that they will conform with the rest of the series; some of the line drawings are reduced in size to eliminate tip-ins; the plates are rescreened and assembled as signatures; and some advertisements are omitted - reluctantly - to keep the volumes of uniform size. Grateful acknowledgment is due many individuals, the members of the Editorial Board, and the Sierra Club's Directors for their belief in the merit of the project to republish and for their faith in its success. - David R. Brower, Chairman / Sierra Club Editorial Board / Berkeley, California / October 15, 1950 " - L-SC1.
