Octavo, burgundy cloth (hardcover), gilt letters and decoration to upper cover, top edge gilt, tissue-protected frontis., xlv, 170 pp. Fine. From Publishers' Preface: One hundred years ago, on January 24, 1848, gold was discovered in California. As the news of that discovery reached the Middle West and the states along the Atlantic Seaboard, fortune seekers started for the new El Dorado. Singly and in groups they went, by land and water, in ever increasing numbers and in 1849 the "gold rush" reached its height. Much has been written to describe the trials and hardships of these adventurers. For this year's volume of The Lakeside Classics the publishers have selected one of these accounts, the narrative of Reuben Cole Shaw. While not as full of horrors as many of the accounts are, it tells of the difficulties of planning and carrying out an expedition through out then unsettled and little known western country and presents a vivid picture of its scenic grandeur. The reader will get the most out of the narrative if he will read it against the compact background depicted by Milo Milton Quaife, the long-time editor of The Lakeside Classics, in the excellent historical introduction appearing on pages xvii to xlv. California, American Biography, Western Americana, American West, Gold Rush, Americana, U.S.-iana. yalic.
